1. Apologies in advance for name-dropping. Was out with the rock and roll band on Saturday playing at the dinner dance of the sports club that Mrs Street belongs to. Our lead guitarist is no longer with us so we needed a dep. Our rhythm guitarist casually suggests his mate, who met on a campsite in France earlier this, a certain Mr Alan Warner, of The Foundations fame (chatters under 30 ask your parents). Who agreed to do it!

So there's me on Saturday, the original weekend warrior, playing with a real live, professional, gigging proper musician, trying desparately to keep the error count in single figures. Think I got away with it, Mrs Street is still talking to me, and we may have another booking from it. Alan himself is a real gent and still a great guitar player.

And I worked out that if you play an eighth note walking bassline for a version of Johnny B Goode that goes on for 5 minutes at 130bbm, you play 1,300 notes - which may explain why my hands ached the following morning.

  2. I have a pair of Laney wedge monitors for sale. First is an active Laney CXP-115, the other is a matching passive Laney CXM-115. Follow the links to get all the details. Both have been gigged and so have a few scuffs and scratches, but nothing serious - more importantly they both work perfectly. Connecting cables are included.

They retail for about £375 so say £200? But happy to consider reasonable offers. Because of their size and weight posting them is not really practical, so buyer collects. Saying that I'm happy to deliver/meet up over a reasonable distance. I live just off J26 of the M25 and work in Milton Keynes. PM me if you're interested.

I started a thread about this - together with a link to the regulations, and a method of compliance... although it may not be directly usable with the forum software. The thread did seem to wander off topic a little though.

Sorry mate, didn't see your thread until after I'd posted. I like your solution but think it may be a bit too much for a site such as Basschat, where (as I understand it) you can continue to rely on implied consent, as long as there's a clear signpost to a plain-English explaination of the cookies used. I deliberately didn't post on Off Topic as I thought it might not be taken too seriously, especially on a Friday evening.

Yes, that's what I imagined too. Who is policing this law though?
It will be policed by the Information Commissioners' Office (ICO). I can't imagine sites like Basschat are going to be on its radar any time soon but I thought you should be aware.

We could just add a line of notifying text in the joining T&C about joining the site is giving explicit permission for the website to store cookies etc
Putting something in the T&C's for joiners probably won't be enough as you have casual vistors to the site as well.

If you want, when my employer puts its solution live I'll send you a link and you can see what we're doing - which is about the minimum you can do and be on the right side of the law. But as I said I doubt you have an urgent issue but just something to have on the to-do list.

  5. Just like this http://www.zazzle.co...586063962209337. Stone green, extra large. Brand new, unworn, cost £15ish new, yours in exchange for a donation to Basschat. If you're interested send me a PM.

  6. Sorry if I'm trying to teach anyone to suck eggs, but you may know that there's been a change to the law around cookies which will start to be enforced from the end of this month. All owners of websites that use cookies we need to make changes to their site - and that includes this one.

I've been doing some work on this for my employer. Unfortunately no-one's come up with a definitive solution, but the attached article (from a fairly well respected organisation) sets out the position very clearly and the suggested solution will (in my view) be ideal for Basschat.

I'm sure that there are many people in the Basschat community who know far more about this than me, so apologies if I've got it all wrong - only trying to help!

  7. Excuse me for being very lazy, I could probably find this out by doing some research, but..............

Most octave pedals I've seen produce a note one octave below the note you play. Is there a pedal that produces a note one (or two, or three) octave(s) above you play? I've been lucky enough to try a 12 string bass (low E plus 2x high E etc) and it sounded amazing. As I can't afford (or probably play) such a beast I was wondering if I could get a box of tricks that might replicate the sound?

  8. Auditioned this afternoon for a working covers band. They sent me their set list, I picked out the dozen or so I knew, they asked me to learn two more. Went along, played the two new ones and a selection from the stuff I knew. Bit of give and take on both sides. Can't say fairer than that really.

  9. [sub]Great gig last night. Was at the Water Rats in King's Cross in London playing at the local hospital's staff Christmas party. Maybe 150 people in all getting very drunk. A short set of originals went well, and then the place erupted when Elvis took to the stage and we backed him for a half a dozen 50's rock and rollers. The guy (who works at the hospital) does it semi-pro and he's excellent - the crowd loved him. A quick break then a dozen covers - all real cliched stuff (Mustang Sally, SCOM - which got a big cheer as we started it - Stones etc) but the crowd were up and dancing. Then more mayhem when Elvis came back on (in a red glitterly jumpsuit with cape!) for a 'Vegas' set. Finished up with a couple of Christmas songs (It's Chriiiiiiiiiiistmas!). It got a bit ragged to towards the end (we were on stage for over nearly hours and tiredness and a couple too many beers came into the equation - but not guilty, your honour) but it was a real fun evening and I'd do it all again tonight if I could.[/sub]

  10. [sub]An interesting post. This is a long story to say something quite mundane but bear with me. Got my first bass in 1974 (that's 37 years ago - Good Lord!). I'd recently bought Quadrophenia and those basslines had a profound impact on me. So I spend hours learning them, and stuff by John Paul Jones, and Jack Bruce, and Roger Waters et al until I thought I was ready to play in a band. So I start auditioning, and there's me with all the fast runs, fancy riffs and alternative modes - and a sharp slap in the face from the reality that most bands just want (and in fact just need) someone to hold it all together - simple and tight being the watchwords. And over the intervening years my real respect has been for the guys who can do just that - play for the band, and make it sound good while keeping control of the natural urge to play more than is absolutely needed. So no, I can't do all the fancy stuff - but can I really play bass - well that's for others to judge, but that's what I aspire to. [/sub]

  11. My originals band are thinking of recording some decent demo tracks. I said I'd ask the wise souls on Basschat if they could recommend somewhere suitable.

We're a 5 piece (2x guitar, bass, drums, vocals) playing indie-ish rock, all based around the Wood Green/Enfield area of North London. Aiming to record maybe 3 tracks. Budget would cover probably 2 days recording plus mastering. This would be the first time in the studio for most, so we're looking for somewhere who wouldn't get phased by some complete novices. So good, friendly, reasonably priced and based in North London. Not much to ask for, really! But seriously, any recommendations would be appreciated.
