1. I bought this from a local forumer with a blown driver a while back now, was loaded with Peavey Sheffields at the time (not the original drivers) so replaced with 2, 8ohm eminence betas and also replaced the horn diaphragm. Its one of the early Eden built cabs - carpet covered, originally had binding posts for connectors but i've replaced with a jack. Great punchy lightweight cab - I've gigged with this cab alone for a while now and it's been great. For sale to fund new GAS £125 collect from South Devon or you can arrange a courier

2. yep I drilled out the centre of the original gnurled one and it's a good fit on the switch now so all 3 match. Also just touched up the chip with a black marker just to make it less obvious. Also soldered in new 500k pots from Mansons to replace the cheap ones it was shipped with. The other option for posting i guess is unbolting the neck? Would make it easier/safer and could wrap it well

3. the pics are in this thread here - sorry not sure how to just paste the images here!! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry678650

4. will try to post some pics in a bit - i posted some in a "wanted" thread end of last year but can't find them now.
There's no case with it, and I only have a card box from a guitar at the moment so I'd get some more and some bubblewrap to box it up as best I could for a forward collection but would be at buyers risk - I'm not sure if couriers insure guitars not in a case?

5. Laney BC120 combo, 120w 1x15 (HH Invader) with compressor and graphic EQ. Great fairly light combo - works well with passive or active basses. I've used this for small gigs with no probs at all. Re-covered in black vinyl. £90 or swap for a compact 1x15 cab (my peavey 115bw is sooo heavy!!) collection from Devon or will post at cost (guess about 15 quid?)

6. I'm thinning down my collection of amps etc - got a Laney LC15 combo for sale. Output transformer has been recently replaced for a multi-tap one and the line-out jack has been swapped for an extension speaker jack (series) and an 8/16ohm switch has been added. I've been using it with an 8ohm 12" ext cab and it sounds great - proper little rock machine! Recent power tubes and re-bias, plus I've soldered diodes across the pt bases to prevent flashover in the OT. £85 and I can even throw in a free empty 1x10 cab if it's local collection to make a nice little mini-stack. The wires on the OT have been shrink wrapped so there's no bare HV wires showing, but the transformer doesn't have a cover so would recommend adding one!!!
Also gave got a Laney Pro Tube AOR 3012 series 2 - recent JJ power tubes and mains transformer. Has been tweaked to lose the nasty fizzy AOR distortion (resistors and caps changed on v1 cathodes) and have played with the coupling caps too. Has transformed it - not desperate to sell this one now as it sounds so good, and much better for smaller gigs than my LC50 (loud?!?!?!) but I should really clear some space. £175 firm for this one
Also got a barely-used Dunlop Fuzz Face JDF2 - boxed perfect condition £60 (double that new)
Collection from Devon for the amps but will post the pedal for a fiver.

7. Is anyone by any chance familiar with the insides of the gp12smx series preamps? My voltage selector got knocked to 115v getting packed away after my last gig and it blew when I plugged it in :) It took out all the 63v caps on the back board, which I've replaced; along with the varistor. It's working now but the compressor doesn't seem to work as it should (very little effect) and I'm getting a lot of hiss when I switch in the graphic - especially when i raise the 180- 660hz sliders. It's silent without the graphic switched in though. The cap on the graphic board looks a bit iffy so I'm going to swap that out but I wondered if anyone knew which IC(s) are in the compression circuit as that was going to be my next guess.

If anyone has any ideas how I might be able to contact Gavin who used to run GM Audio as well then I'd appreciate any suggestions.

8. Taken from an SWR Goliath Jr - but pretty sure these are Sheffield 1056-8's as physical specs all match up - definitely not eden or pas swr ones as they are pressed steel baskets. one has a tear on the voicecoil surround so needs a recone, the other in GWO. 8 ohm, no Peavey labels, only markings are 1056 and x4240. pressed baskets look a lot like eminences - I thought they were betas originally but the magnets are bigger, the magnets/voicecoil are not vented and the linear excursion seems a lot more, even though theyre only rated at 175w. spec below. £40pr +post sound fair?

9. i've got a passve 4 string OLP, single pickup version that I picked up in as-new condition ;) - way I've looked at it is a great platform to start modding from. Stock wiring and pickup imo was awful, flat-sounding and with little variation on the controls - but they can all be changed easy enough - I've now got a switch in place of a volume pot giving me series/parallel or single coil, and a cheap wilkinson pup that I'm really impressed with too, all in less than 20 quid. However the important bits (to me) are the neck - which is lovely to play, and well dressed/finished - dropped the action pretty low and no buzzing. It is a very light body though, and I'm not convinced the paint finish is the best quality - the paint has chipped a little behind the scratchplate where the mounting holes are, and I don't think it would take much to ding or chip. The string tree and strap button holes are all a bit iffy too - wouldnt take much to strip them I wouldnt think.

funnily enough my other/main bass is an original series made in Japan Ibanez ATK. Much as I like the OLP I wouldn't put them in the same class - the finish and equipment (bridge, tuners, wiring hardware etc) on the ATK are far better, as is the sound which is just awesome. I'd stack the atk up against basses costing twice or three times as much without hesitation - mind you for what I paid for the OLP I'd say the same about that too

10. cheers ;)

I used Rustins grain filler- was a bit of a job to track down locally but ended up getting it online from carlisle glass. A lot of local palces tried to palm me off wth regular filler but by all accounts it isnt really the stuff for the job. this was easy enough to use - just mix it into a paste with spirit and rub it into the grain with a coarse cloth, leave it a bit then wipe the excess off across the grain. Hopefully it'll really help it stand out through the trans finish

11. pics to follow tomorrow, someone was going to have it locally but theyve let me down - just picked up another cab and am rapidly running out of room!!
Sheffield speaker-version of Peavey TNT combo - big heavy beast but loud and versatile - not to mention reliable. 160w@4ohms - no extension speaker output which is its only downfall really, but to be honest with the graphic , shelving and pre's etc you can get a pretty punchy sound from it anyway. it has a variable crossver output if you wanted to run another power amp and an extension cab though so there are other ways round this. Handle on the top is starting to split a little - probably due to the weight of the amp, but is still useable. If I were keeping it I would fit a fold-down handle on each end I think
can't post this, but could possibly deliver as far as Exeter or Plymouth for fuel money. can't let it go for less than £100, which I think is fair for this one. any questions leave a message or pm me for my number. Ta for looking!!

12. Had a bit of a hankering for another westone bass for a while - had a thunder 1 guitar a few years ago and really regret selling it. Managed to pick up a reasonably cheap thunder 1a bass locally a couple of weeks back - a bit tatty cosmetically and with one broken switch but good for the money I reckon. Really nice to play too, if a little neck-heavy - tips on the headstock if you let it go.
Was originally in a satin light oak finish when I got it, but it was looking a bit tired so decided to refinish it. So far I've taken it back to bare wood and filled the grain with a light mahogany grain filler to really highlight the endgrain. Next step is a couple of coats of sanding sealer then i'm going for a trans-colour finish on the upper and lower ash parts and leaving the centre natural. Not decided what colour yet - torn between a dark green, a teal blue or maybe orange or red.
more pics to follow as it progresses

13. No pics at the mo - will probably post some once I have done the scratchplate. Been looking at your Sub project - looking good!! Really like that shade of blue - are you planning on keeping the black headstock and hardware? Think if I do strip and stain the body would probably go for chrome hardware and a natural headstock - quite a bit of work to do though.

14. I bought an OLP MM2 4-string musicman a little while ago with the intention of giving my Ibanez ATK a bit of a rest from gigging and practicing, wit the intention of a few mods just to make it a bit more useable. Its the black one with the horrible silver pearloid scratchplate (that was the first thing to go!!) - bought it secondhand but hardly used so for the money was happy enough with it. From the off the neck feels really nice - slimmer and faster feeling than the Ibanez. there was way too much relief in it when I got it though, and the action was sky high so have tweeked the truss rod a bit and lowered the action - pleased to say that even slung pretty low theres no buzzing so thumbs up from that perspective - is now really nice to play. What a weight difference from the ATK too!!!

Electrics left a lot to be desired though - it's passive so was never going to sound as good as the ibby, but as stock it as flat-sounding - lacking any decent bottom end and "wooly" sounding in the mids and highs; and with a pretty low output. The tone pot was also a bit on-off, and given the lack of definition in the sound anyway didnt do much.

First swap was a Wilkinson replacement humbucker wired up as per the original pickup - 6.5k ish on each coil (=13k series) as opposed to the weedy 2.7k each coil (5.4 series) in the original pickup. This was a slight improvement over stock, but still a bit "flat" sounding and with very little variation using either volume or the tone pot.
Decided that I would rather have the option of a parallel/series humbucker option so have just spent not sure how many finger-burning hours wiring in a rotary switch to give me a few more options - what a difference!!! I replaced one of the volume pots with a 3-way 4-pole rotary switch from Maplin (part number FF76H) and translated a schematic from a single humbucker esquire guitar that was using a 3 way strat type switch to the same ends. I didn't get any wiring guide with the Wilkinson pickup, so took a bit of head scratching and swapping of wires to work out the polarity on both coils and what to do with the shield wire, but managed to finish it about an hour ago.

What a difference though - it has transformed it! In the parallel humbucker position it has a tight, punchy sound with a lot of bottom end, and good amount of definition in the treble end - not very mid-dy but would probably compare it to my ATK in the Bridge position. In the single coil (bridge side) position it sounds smilar to the parallel humbucker but with perhaps a little less output and a bit of a "thinner" tone. Serial humbucker position though is where it is all happenig - it has now turned it into an animal (well, for a passive bass anyway!!). The output is percievably louder than the other two positons, and its a really full, fat sound with a real midrange growl - am really chuffed with it. Perhaps lacks a little of the definition of the other two positions but the overall sound more than makes up for it imo.
The other good thing now is that it responds so much better to tweaks on the volume and tone pots - they are still the original pots but now have a much more defined effect - much less on-off and more gradual.

I had been thinking of getting the body routed and going "active", but after this think I may well just leave it as it is. Pickup only cost me a tenner, and the switch about 2-3 quid so for the money am stoked with it sound wise as well as playability wise too now.

Still got to make a new scratchplate up for it - got a sheet of material just need to cut it and shape it up. Other mods planned are to replace the string tree (whose screw mounting has threaded already!!) with a wider flatter type with more than one mounting screw, and thinking that the bridge is also a bit cheap and thin looking so a conversion including drilling for through-body stringing and a new bridge are on the cards.

Only thing I have to do now is try to find a black gnurled knob for the selector switch pole - the shaft is about 2mm bigger in diameter than the original volume pot unfortunately so can't reuse the one from the redundant volume pot.

15. cheers for the replies, progress been a bit slow but assembled lots of bits so far, got a SWR 2x10 needing a replacement driver from alex5string on here, and picked up a bright box with 3 vintage Motorola 15ohm flared horns and a crossover from the local tip/recycling centre for a fiver yesterday - not sure its necessary but for the money it was worth a punt ;) Got a replacement cone today for the SWR, so just need to hook it all up and see how I get on. Money wise I need to stick with the s600m for the mean time but its always proved reliable in the past so hopefully it will see me through - however will be putting a bit of cash aside aiming for a QSC at some point in the next 6 months

16. well, gave it a try last night through my new trace/peavey stack - wierd after only ever playing one bass for so long. Really nice to play - neck feels a lot slimmer than the ibanez and noticed how much lighter it was after four hours of practicing!! Sound wise it doesn't compete with the ibanez at the moment - a bit of an unfair comparison as the ibanez is active I know, and is a much heavier bass as well; but the OLP has potential I think. Sounds a bit "muddy" in comparison - lacks either the low end punch or the high end clarity of the ibanez but does have a really lovely warm midrange sound in comparison - worked well through the valve preamp setting on the trace - it just lacks clarity and "oomph" for want of a better word. I think to be happy in the long run though I'm gonna need to get the router out and look at an active setup :)
Can't fault it otherwise thogh, held its tune perfectly, no nasty noises, very pleased with it.
Ordered a sheet of black scratchplate material yesterday too so hopefully will be losing the hideous pearlescent thing soon

the IB sounds nice - i was thinking of a stained green oiled finish if I do strip this bass. Any pics on here?
