1. Thanks guys' all comments most appreciated and some very good pointers.

I have decided that I will go for both! Just ordered a P and will order the Jazz as soon as Christmas is out of the way and I can sneak it into the house 'unseen' ;-(

    Cheers again!

    Steve.
Yes, but what feels really nice in one man's palm might not be so good in another. (ooer missus). Bit like saying 'size nine shoes fit really well'. I prefer a Precision, and I have small-to-medium hands; my guitarist friend here has hands like shovels and hates the P, loves the J.

    +1. As is the P. Nothing quite like a P with a pick :-)

Sorry, that's really unhelpful. Luckily P and J necks are easily swapped (and re-sold).
2. People,

I am really in two minds between purchasing a Precision or a Jazz or possibly the P Hybrid (P special).
I own an old Aria SB1000 which is a thing of beauty but I feel its sound is close to that of a Jazz so what I would really like is an instrument with a much fatter sound so the P would seem to be the answer. Ideally I would like both but following a recent redundacy buying the two might be pushing it with 'her in doors' mind you with three years salary perhaps a Wal or similar ;-)

So what instrument would be best - the P or the J??

Anyone out there an expert in both that could give me a brief run down of the sound difference? I have a budget of £500 to play with.

  3. Just seen an Aria SB900 on the Bay for the princely sum of £795!

As a big fan of Aria SB's I am gobsmacked, the SB1000 is the series flagship (not the 900) and I have seen second hand 1000's ones go for up to £700 but if you shop around you can pick one up for around £500 I will be amazed if this goes for that price!

Anyobne got more money than sense?

  4. The first Bass I bought was a Westone thunder 1 in Natural, it was a hound of an instrument the tone was awful and it weighed a ton. I soon replaced it with an Aria SB which was a similar price but twice the instrument. I would go for a Thunder 3 if one comes up it's vastly superior.

I seem to recall the action was very high and it went out of tune in a very short space of time - which was very frustrating at the time.

Might have been just a bad one but then again it was 25 years ago!

It does look in good condition though...

What a beauty! I've been gassing over one of these for a while, and the sound would suit the new band I'm standing in for at the mo, and this listing is doing feck all to help!

If I didn't need to pay out a similar amount of cash next week for Council Tax I'd be all over this.

EDIT: Although this is an absolute minter, and right on my doorstep to boot. I bet when I have the cash together to put in a bid in a couple of weeks, there'll be nothing going :)
5. Looks like he is trying to make a quick buck, he has been asked by a lot of people about the dodgy finish so he has removed the picture with the tell-tale signs of a 'cowboy' job. Why can't people just be honest, I am pretty sure he would still sell it but perhaps for half the price.

Why is the clint eastwood Good bad and ugly theme in my head!?

  6. Hi,

I am in the market for a 70's Fender Jazz (Reissue is fine) I have got to the nitty gritty and it's colour that I am interested in now. I recently saw an old clip on you tube of Echo and the Bunnymens bass player Les Pattison playing what appears to be a 70's era Jazz what blew me away was the colour it was a very dark blue and I cannot find any more details of the factory colour for this bass all that comes up is a Lake placid blue which is more light blue than Les's instrument.

Anyone out there know what this colour is and if Fender still do it?

    Cheers,

    Steve.

  7. I have heard that there is another instrument that has six strings.... But less is more! ;-)

I grew up in the late 70's early 80's listening to the likes of JJ Burnell, Derek Forbes and Mick Karn who were clearly the 'lead' instrument so why take a back seat!

    Steve.

  8.
You know, I don't think I've ever seen Derek Forbes mentioned here - or on the old versions of the site.
Derek is a really nice guy to boot. I e-mailed him a few years back regarding what equiupment he used on the Sons and Fascination album and he not only told me what he used but what his set-up was, amplification, strings - you name it! I have exchanged a few mails with him over the years and he is always friendly and honest. The official line of him leaving Minds in 1985 from the band was that he was basically being lazy not turning up to rehersals and generally enjoying the rock and roll lifestyle a bit too much.

Derek has said that he was taking it a bit easier than he should but there was more to it than that. One thing is for sure Minds were poorer for him going the Once upon a time album is MOR american mid eighties rock despite having a fab replacement in John Giblin the bass is almost invisible.

He now has two clips of himself on you tube playing two tracks; Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel and also I Travel - check them out...

He also told me he has all the equipment from his minds days.

  9. Hi,

Was thinking of investing in a 4 string Hudson Spalt Maple Bass. Having fallen intially in love with the look, have just found an owner who has put a clip of his 5 string version on You tube for perusal. anyone know anything about them? Cranes Music of Cardiff are sellign them for £500, although thay are also selling them for £300 on E-bay!?

    Any info would be helpful.

    Ta,

    Steve.

  10. Hi,

I have always had a soft spot for the early eighties range of Aria Basses particularly the flagship SB1000. I was lucky enough to purchase an SB1000 after e-mailing every guitar shop I could find on line and eventually paid £495 for a 1980 version which plays like a dream the neck is in almost mint condition and barely has a surface scratch on it!

I am just starting out as a player having been an armchair Bass fan since seeing the likes of Pino Palladino and Mick Karn play in the early eighties.

Anyone out there own an SB1000 or other models of the Aria - what do you think of their qualities?

    Cheers,

    Steve.
