1. Iscolman, love that Empathy 5 - You don't see many of the 5's around these days.

BassBus, your highly polished 1000 is looking really good - Still not quite as stunning as 'Miss Maple', though :)

Sam, your KingBass is stunning! Are those Status or SIMS led's? Make sure the 16.5mm one you're looking at is even better than that one!

Some fantastic basses tonight, guys. Thanks for sharing!

    Rich.

  2.
I think Outtoplayjazz, if you can afford it a CIJ P bass (with the us pups) would do the trick for not much, my old one i sold sounded amazing straight into a DI. You never know you may grow to like it.
Think of it as a historic version of a status, Like a status is a M16 and the P bass is a flintlock. They both do the same thing, just differently.
Thanks, I may look into that. First, I'll see how I go with my lovely Fender/Sadowsky jazz & the Status quintet. Lots of sounds to be had between that lot!

I'm liking the gun analogy here - Does that make a Stingray an AK-47 assault rifle? :)

  3. I have the digitech JamMan. It's excellent live & can even link up to your computer as a multi-track recording device. You can also loop vocals with the microphone plugin.

I did a looped solo at a Christmas gig with mine & seeing the anticipation on the audience's faces as I added more notes to a sequence was real fun!

  4. Just a late night thought...

A while back I was chatting to another pro bass player who was saying that every serious session player should have a vintage Precision in their armoury. Now I know some producers ask for a "classic bass sound" and I've had others who've been very happy to let me play what I'm happy playing, but has anyone ever been expected to play a Precision or any other specific bass?

I'm mainly just curious, as I've personally never got along with Precisions. I've tried to find P-love, but after buying and selling three I just find I don't get along with them & don't really like the sound. Now I've got a lot more session work coming in I'm wondering whether I should try again?

  5. From the Lakland jazzes I've played, the Lakland seems a little lighter and feels slightly less substantial. Not to say that they're of lesser quality, though. They seem to nail the classic jazz sound very well. Very 60's sounding and perhaps a little warmer than the Fender which is very bright sounding. The string spacing on the JO4 version I played most recently was much narrower than the standard 19mm on a Fender. Apart from that, it's all down to personal preference, I think.

Any Lakland experts out there who can give us some more ideas?

  6. I've always found that using a lot of gain on the amp (whatever amp you're using) tends to make the bass sound too harsh. I generally operate the total opposite of making anything "clip." I usually use only about 25% input gain and around 50% output volume. Basically twice the volume compared to the gain. That way the sound is always sweet and tonally pleasant & I never make anyone's PA clip.

  7. Well, of the famous ones, probably Diana Krall, Judith Owen, Belinda Carlisle & Jane Weidlin.

But my personal faves are one of the singers who works for me from time to time, Nicki Allan from Leeds (Have a listen to her at www.myspace.com/outtoplayjazz ) & Anita Wardell. Look up Anita on myspace or iTunes. Her scatting voice is something else! The bass player in both cases, from time to time has been me :)

  8.
You should have told me sooner, I've just finished sanding sunburst off of one of my basses, took me all morning.

    That neck looks fabulous OTPJ.
Thanks Wayne - Yes, it's just about the nicest wooden neck I've ever played, save for Molan's MTD. That one will take some beating!
