  1. I'm tempted at the JJ model. Just emailed them, so we'll see what comes back, although I may need to wait a little while, as I've just bought a Hofner violin bass & have a Geddy Lee Jazz on order!

  2. Here goes...

  3. Yes, that's what it looks like. The body certainly isn't Status & Rob Green would never let even one of the older wooden necks out of the factory looking like that. Perhaps the Status bridge, tuners & pickups would be worth salvaging, but this is definitely not a real Status bass.

  4. Lfalex, yes I did have the VMJ, but I traded it (and my Status Groove) for the amazing Warwick $$ :) I also sold my MIM Jazz V to a pupil at around the same time. But I do still have the jazz bug, so I'm thinking a Geddy's on it's way from Thomann this week.

I also looked at the importers & the only one I liked the look of was the 75 reissue natural ash with the badass II for £799. With the Geddy I can have all that & a J-retro as well for the same money! Seems to make sense to me, anyway

Interesting to see so many Lakland endorsees here as well. I've never played one, but have always liked the look of them.

    Here goes.............

  5. Hmmm... I feel a new classification coming along here - Stealth GAS! I haven't had that for a while. I suppose it's because I spend so much time on the web looking at basses, my GAS-ing is controlled by desiring what I've looked at and researched. I think a Geddy Lee jazz is coming this week. Got the bug again at the moment after having a fun day out buying my Hofner violin bass last week :)

  6. I've played an EB3 cherry at a friend's shop... It was okay, if unremarkable. The thing you have to remember is that you're never going to get a modern bass sound of any kind from a bass that has a pickup right at the base of the neck.

I like the vintage sound and decided to go the whole hog this last week. I bought a Hofner Contemporary violin bass in black with white piping. It's utterly lovely & very easy to play, with a very smooth bottm end resonance much like my Triumph upright - Short scale too, for those of you who complain of small hands :) Much the best buy if you want a vintage sound. (I'm getting them in for £320 a time!) Try one, you won't be disappointed.

  7. Hey everyone,

I've got my Ibanez 5-stringer on the 'bay & can't decide which Fender jazzer to go for... I love the look of the USA S1 jazz in Candy Cola, but I can't justify the crazy pricetag!

I've got it down to the Geddy Lee & the Marcus Miller nt4, both of which I can have at a similar price. Which would you choose & why? And are these two basses with their badassII's appreciably better than the hideously overpriced US S1 variant?

    Thanks in advance,

    OTPJ

  8. Quite, yes! Although I usually have a very modern bass sound with the Status/Warwick & the MarkBass rig. This was a good opportunity to try the amplifier's vintage sound filter. Very effective as well. I also use this sort of setup for the Triumph upright.

Sibob, yes it sounds hugely better on the rounds. Like a more 3-dimensional sound at the bottom end & more of an old p-bass sound at the top. All in all, very satisfying.

  9. The aforementioned Bolin player is Huw from the Beer Monsters (www.soditletshaveabeer.co.uk) and General Skullduggery (www.generalskullduggery.co.uk). Bev & Carol at the Music Inn are the only people I've seen carrying Bolins in the UK as well. You may find one in the bass gallery in London, but I definitely haven't seen them anywhere else.

Here's a little shot of Huw with his Bolin...

  10. Lovely collection you have there! I've been a Status man myself for getting on towards 20 years, so I know the attraction of them only too well. Just ordered a Stealth II with gold hardware :))

Love the graphite weave on the KingBass V - That's a scorcher. Which one do you play the most?

  11. I'd agree with Machines... Active is always best for a more controllable sound. No flat spots or quiet patches! I've sold every passive bass I've ever owned, as much as I love the jazz aerodyne as well!
