  1. We're vinyl lovers in this house, we invested in a decent system just as CDs were being released and have stuck with the medium throughout making further investments along the way. It was only very recently we bought our first CD player, 4-5 years ago? Now I admit our vinyl player is of a far higher quality than our CD player even though it was still quite expensive but vinyl has a big edge over listenability in my opinion as long as the vinyl is spotless (we have a record cleaning machine). There is also something more of an occasion to playing a record the set up, the album art, it's less so with a CD but not gone and let's face it the sound quality isn't bad at all with minimum fuss and it still gives that sense of ownership. Downloads, we did try but it seemed wrong somehow, download, click/play despite the excellent sound quality it feels disposable somehow.

So are CDs going to become relics of the past? I hope not, there is something extra to owning a physical medium

  2. In 77 I was in a punk band and we played a venue that was expecting something a little different. Half way through the first song a few people got up and tried to throw us out with undue violence (read that as a mass invasion and an attempt to kill us) so I hit one of them with a brand new Les Paul and broke it, I also got arrested (and released later on). That was a bad reception and one that is always on my mind even now before a gig. I was very very frightened by that

Hiho just had carbon fibre cages fitted to my neck and all's well now.

No not my bass but me and hopefully I'll stay in tune better now.

I hope you get better soon but watch out for smart a...s who want to crank your ears to get you back in tune :)

  4. Sorry for the delay, away the night.

I was asking really about reinforcing rods in a wooden neck probably similar to a 4 string Jazz neck. It will be made from African Mahogany, in 5 laminates from quarter sawn timber which is currently resting after ripping down.

  5. Sat in the van and killing time so time to ask this question:

do you have an opinion on carbon reinforced necks? Lifeless, full of life, dark, bright? And anything else they may or not be aside from helping keep the neck more stable.

Ive never played one and honestly have no idea but I’ve been considering putting them in my new build but I’d love to hear what you guys who may have used them have to say

    thanks :)

I have shoulder problems due to arthritis and use a strap from hypnotic straps, it’s 3” wide and very well padded. Despite my Gibson being the same weight as a boat anchor I don’t have issues.

I have 3 Hypnotic straps, I like them a lot. I have chucked my old straps now

I was involved in s car accident over a year ago and my left shoulder is still uncomfortable most of the time but especially after playing.

What’s the best strap to avoid aggravating this condition when playing?

Are you getting physio for that injury? If not go see your doctor, if so ignore me

  8. Hiya!! I'm brand new here too. You're from Paris, I so want to go to Paris, maybe this autumn when the crowds die down a touch. We're off to France for a month or two anyway, we love it there

I haven't clue what that's about, but it reads like lyrics or poetry that has been machine translated through several languages. Interesting!

It's a bunch of Jam song titles bundled into something that has a bit of punctuation in it here and there

God help me, I can see myself banned by the end of the week (Thursday today!!) This is me on my best behaviour

Ped, can we ban Christine please? xD

    You Billy Hunt!! xD

Only kidding, Thick as thieves we are!

    OK Finished, no more

Back on topic (ish) I would love to be in a Status Quo (pre 77)  tribute band, too old now and not enough energy

If its a fixed neck, I'm not sure how you would get all the way to the neck with any router arrangement unless I've misunderstood something.

One option - because the type of jig you show is actually a very good design - might be to rout on the jig as far as it will go close to the neck, and finish the last inch with sharp chisels?

And yes - warm welcome. :)

Thank you. I'm planing on cutting the binding rebate before gluing the neck in place (set neck). I had initially planed it to be a through neck but thankfully I discounted that and yes you're right it would have been a problem I hadn't considered. I had thought maybe to glue the neck after scraping the binding flush and after some sanding but before the final sand (sort of see what I think at the time. It's the very first Les Paul type guitar I've ever built so its an adventure :)

I've settled on buying the Radian 3 flute rebate cutter set and see how it pans out, maybe even use a 3 ply white/black binding, I just don't know until I cut a couple of test pieces. At a push I might be able to put a wrap of masking tape on the guide bearing too if need be (not nice I know)

*wracks brain trying to think of a Down In The Tube Station At Midnight pun*

    *gives up*

Terrible when that happens, it's the bitterest pill, you might as well light your funeral pyre and all around the world, in  a strange town, a town called malice in fact , this English rose and the man in the corner shop along with Smithers-Jones will write to the news of the world for publication in the city but not pretty green fields filled with carnations

    How terrible is that?

  14. This whole tribute act argument bores me to death, what's the problem? If you don't like it move on to something you do like; if I stopped to add comment to everything I didn't like I'd be typing for the rest of my like and never get off page one, the sooner you grow up and get on with life the better. We're all different, accept it, don't make yourself look inadequate by trashing everything you don't like.

Like it or lump it, the market for bands is driven by audience demand, if they don't want to see it they won't pay and hence you don't get the booking. The universal truth for any group of musicians is; if you want to get on you have to give the audience want to hear what you have to offer or make the audience want to hear what you have to offer and no amount of whining or whinging will ever change that

Very sorry about that, one of the few things that annoy me are people who like to put others down in any way, why not try and make them smile for a change?

  15. I play in a Banshees cover band, I won't say tribute even though we don't play anyone else's music, with the best will in the world I'm never going to pass for Steve Severin xD we don't try to emulate any particular members but do dress appropriately. It's all very simple stuff, a lot of fun to play and so far has gone down very well

Phew..! Luckily the 'young man' reference puts me well in the clear (although my poor English could have pointed the finger in my direction :$ ...). I'm sure I would have chosen ... er... 'other' descriptions of colour. ;)

LOL, I'm sorry, accusations like that can follow you around :)

I just saw "sounds familiar" and "Location: France" and thought who do I know in France.... Well I feel better now, that's us both out of a sticky situation!!

Hat, coat... I know ha ha!

So who do I know in France? Not the orgasm kid surely?

I feel duty bound to explain that comment :)

It started with a discussion online with a young man from France regarding the aging of white Tbirds between white and cream, His English not being absolutely perfect described a shade of white as being, well you can work it out but I have found every opportunity to poke fun at him ever since :)
