I had some very exciting news from Paul over at Wal HQ today. My MKI was scheduled for early Dec but it seems that it will now be ready in September! He sent me a photo of it to show where it's got to in the build and...damn it's pretty. It looks better than I imagined it would. Roll on September! Here's the pic.

Here's a quick update for you all. I've just post this on Wal Bass Lovers Facebook page but I thought I'd share it here to.

On the left is the new MK1 on the right is a recently acquired 1988 Fretless. Both Birdseye Maple and Ebony Boads, both utterly wonderfully. I'm totally made up!

Not sure why it's sideways on...posted ok on FB....

Played on War Of The Worlds. Saw him with Herbie, when they toured WOTW a few years ago at Brighton, great player. He was also a Womble.....with one with Flying V IIRC.

Very much this... there's huge variation to be had without any knob tweaking whatsoever.

Get a good core tone you're happy with and IMO all the subtle differences you could even need are there with a slight change in technique.

... obviously this only works if you use a clean "traditional" bass sound for the full set. Those who use an effects heavy set up to get what they need are going to struggle to get synthy octave fuzz sounds with a change of plucking position 😕

Oh yes...I've got several pedals to add dirt, more dirt, chorus, octave and so on as the song required.

I tend to run my amps eq flat and tweak the eq on the bass for the room/song. My basses sound quite different, so I am to get the best "signature" tone out of each of them..

That's pretty much what I do. Although I only have one bass at the moment. But favouring neck or bridge pickups, whether I use a pick or fingers, the placment of same - near the neck, bridge or in the middle and how hard I pick or pluck makes the differences in tone I need depending on what I playing. It must be said I'm loving the tone I get from my Eich set up so all is good :)

I chose birdseye for my recent body rebuild. It looks fabulous with the old black poly neck.

I liked the idea of the contrast between the maple top and the black pickups and bridge. I also went for an ebony fret board to continue the look.

    Great choice of facing wood.

Thanks JohnR I had a choice of four and this one "spoke" to me and now I can see it with the hardware in place it looks even better.

It's lovely isn't it... is it Birdseye?

So much variation in Wals. Paul has an incredible eye for detail regardless of whether you want something subtle or full on coffee table.

Yes I think it's beautiful and, yes it's Birdseye. I can't wait to collect her.

  8. I have an Eich 212S teamed with their T 900 amp. I used to have a TC450 with TC 210 and 212 cabs.

I used the Eich set up for the first time last week with my band, which is a rock covers band with loud two guitars and a drummer who is a hard hitter. The new set up sounded great, there was no trouble in being heard and there was plenty of reserve power on tap should I ever need it. The other guys in the band thought my bass has never sounded better and I thought so too. Frankly the new set up blew my old TC rig out of the water and I really liked that rig! I would also give a huge thumps up to the amp as well.

I was very pleased with the cab and how it performed. It's an easy lift, very well made and looks great. I would have no hesitatation in recommending Eich but as ever it's always good to try before you buy. I tried a Vanderkley 212 alongside the Eich and I preferred how the Eich sounded and it's a smaller cab.

  9. Good timing Blue, I have the same question. I sold my TC 450 which has a nice compressor built in and now I have an Eich T900 which doesn't so I've now got a Lehle Basswitch Compressor which I want to add my my pedal board. Most of the online advice is as already meantioned IE after the tuner however with the TC Head the compressor would, in effect, be at the end of the pedal chain....

I am minded to put it after the tuner but I'm open to any other thoughts.

New Wal history blog looking at the woods used in building a Wal bass... this week the necks, next week the bodies... http://walbasshistory.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/wal-woods-part-1-necks.html

By coincidence I received a photo from Wal of the neck for my MKI. It's real now...only 14 months to go....

  11. I ordered my MK I in Feb....12 months to go.....not that I'm counting....

A year down and a year to go on the build of a fretless sister bass to my ziricote sixer.

Great voice too... think he wrote Starless? Killer crunch P-Bass tone...

Think his best playing is probably on UK. A great lost gem of Prog with a hint of Jazz courtesy of Allan Holdsworth!

Oh Yes the first UK Album is fab. Saw them on their first tour as well at the long gone Rainbow Finsbury Park. Happy days.....

  13. I put them them on my PRS and Suhr basses a couple of months ago and my experience so far is that they are very good. Easy to fit and easy to use. I'll certainly buy a set again if needed.

There is also a thick strap option which is very useful on thicker bass straps.

    Hope that helps

  14. The TC Electronics RH 450/750 has three preset channels. I have a 450 and use one channel set up for each of bass; one passive, one active and keep the third free for anything else I might need to do - extra overdrive, compression or perhaps eq'd for a specific effect, etc. But in your case one for each bass would work perfectly and with the foot controller, it's easily switchable and you get a nice tuner as well. Simplez.
