1. I'm no expert on these things but I assume the speaker is working in the reverse principle to a regular ported cabinet. In other words instead of porting the speaker from the rear it is ported from the front. This should provide the cone with similar loading properties and the fact that the sound is radiated from the rear of the cone instead of the front of the cone is departure from the conventional 'speaker pointing forward in a box' design.

Electrovoice have used this principle in a number of their cabinets including the bigger brother, the T-18 and MTL-4 and MTL-2 used in the big PA rigs in the 80's.

All I can say is that I have used the cabs for several years now in a 4 piece band line up and have been very pleased with them. They are reasonably compact and manageable and they both fit into the rear of a Peugeot 205 as the old lead guitarist will confirm! The only reason for selling them is that I am now working in an 8 piece band and have needed to 'up the game' to a somewhat larger and heavier system.

  2. A couple of items for sale:-

    QSC RMX 1450 power amplifier.

The amp is capable of 450 watts per channel or 1400 watts bridged into 4 ohm. more detailed specs can be found at http://www.qscaudio.com/pdfs/Specifications/RMX_spec.pdf

I've had the amp for about 5 - 6 years and it's never missed a beat, being used for running tops within a small PA system. Overall condition is very good as can be seen from the photos as the amp has been racked up the entire time. There is a small scratch on the top cover but once it is in a flight case you can't see it. The only reason I'm selling it is that I've gone the lightweight route as with a couple of these in a flightcase it's becoming a bit much.............it's an age thing!

Collection would be preferred from near Stratford upon Avon but could post / courier but I would imagine this would be a little expensive. - Sold

A pair of Electrovoice S181 bins / subwoofers.

These include protective covers and speaker pole mounting. 18" EV driver in each cab of 8 ohms, rated at 400watts. The cabinets are in tidy condition as they have been transported with transit covers. More detailed specs can be found at http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Spea...S-181%20EDS.pdf. The cabinets have been modified with 20mm screw plate to make provision for a mounting pole to allow a top cab to be mounted. One small point to mention is that the connection plates on the rear of the cabinets are different. For some reason best known to themselves EV decided to change the design at some stage but this is purely cosmetic and does not influence the performance in any way.

If you are using EV SX300's or something similar then these will compliment them no-end. £240. Collection only on these.

  3. The quest to thin out some of my gear continues so here are a few more items for sale.

Protex Flight Case Twin PAR 56 case - two compartments to accommodate 8 x PAR56 lanterns on two 'T' bars. Strong polypropylene construction but lightweight. Unused, still in cardboard box. £35.

Electrovoice S181 - Pair of subwoofers, includes protective transit covers and speaker pole mounting. 18" EV driver in each cab, very tidy condition. Spec can be found at http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Spea...S-181%20EDS.pdf. The original design did not have provision for a mounting pole to allow a top cab to be mounted but these have been modified with a 20mm screw plate to allow this. If you are using EV SX300's or something similar then these will compliment them no-end. £250.

Zero 88 - Lightmaster XL - lighting desk. The unit has 12 channels which can be used to control lighting via DMX or the older analogue +10V system. The unit can be programmed with sequences and also has provision for midi control. Comes with full flightcase. A copy of the manual can be found here giving full details.http://www.gradav.co.uk/images/pdfs/39.pdf - £110.

18" Driver - Precision Devices PDN.18SB40 - uses a neodymium magnet so really lightweight for this size of driver - 8 ohm voice coil. Spec can be found here http://www.precision-devices.com/ShowDetails.asp?id=72. The driver has literally had about 20 minutes use and was used to test out a PA cab I was experimenting with that didn't go any further, so the thing is almost new. The price at Blue Aran is £188 so £120 has to be reasonable.

Rack style – 2U – ali / ply construction, very little use. Has quite a deep centre section (46cm) so more suited to power amps etc. £20

Photos can be made available for anyone interested, just PM me. I'm located not far from Stratford on Avon. Due to the size and/or weight of most of the above postage / courier is not going to be practical but I'm willing to investigate costs if necessary.

  4. Thanks for the responses.

I had already spoken to their service department and as you say they were very helpful. They suggested it may be one of the internal fuses but my experience is that if a fuse does blow with such force then it is indicative of other problems.

It won't be a problem to repair the amp, I am just trying to go as best prepared as possible in order to avoid having to bring the amp home and thus shipping it back again.

    All the best,

    Col

  5. Hi,

My son has an Ashdown MAG 300 that went pop the other night. I'm driving up to see him over the weekend in order to try and sort it out for him but would like to know from any BC members if they have any pointers in terms of what may be wrong and what spares to take with me. (Murphy's Law dictates that whatever spares I take will still be the wrong ones! :) )

The head is about 5 years old so is now well past any initial teething / burning in problems. When my son powered it up he said a blue flash came from behind the front panel. The head still switches on and the VU meter responds to input signals so it tends to indicate that the power supply section is still working but the output is as dead as a dodo. I must add that the amp has always been used with either one or two Ashdown cabinets so the output impedance matching is correct.

I've been searching the forum and also t'internet and the only thing found relates to the mains transformers breaking down so that's not much help in this case.

Any advice or information on the circuit design would be greatly appreciated also if anyone knows what devices are used in the output stage that would also be a big help.

    All the best

  6. The best way of using the harmoniser in a live situation is to come out the desk on one of the post fade aux outputs into the line-in on the Vocalist VR. Then back out of the Vocalist VR into the stereo returns on the desk. Pretty much the same way as you would connect a reverb unit to a desk. Connecting it this way you can then control which mic channel is fed into the Vocalist via the aux levels on the desk.

In practical use it sounds better to limit the feed into the Vocalist VR from just one singer otherwise putting several singers through the harmoniser can get a bit OTT. This can be controlled by turning down the respective aux level on each of the mixer channels.

Its not possible to connect a mic to the front XLR and also to the line in because as soon as the line-in is connected it switches off the connection on the front panel. If you are using a mixing desk I can't think of a reason why you would want to connect to both inputs at the same time anyhow.

If you're stuck for a copy of the manual I could scan the relevant pages for you but to scan the whole lot would make the file size quite big.

    Cheers,

    Col

  8. We did the Motown Museum last year. It was absolutely awesome (for a Motown nut like me anyhow). The nice thing is that the recording studio, sound room and techy stuff if pretty much still intact. Original wood floor, wall panelling etc. The smell of the place is unique as well. All those years of smoking various stuff, sweat and everything else that went into the melting pot. The other thing that is no immediately obvious until you go there is the size of the studio, it's actually quite small and how they crammed all of the artistes into there for a session and mic'd it all up must have been an art in itself. The early recordings were made on a three track recorder if I'm not mistaken. During Motown's time in Detroit Berry Gordy had taken over half of the street as quite a few of the surrounding houses were used for marketing, advertising and the school of etiquette. All of these buildings have now been sold on.

Unfortunately, apart from the Museum there is not too much left in Detroit relating to the Motown years. The 20 Grand Club had been demolished some years ago. One minor disappointment for me was that they don't allow cameras to be used in the building, but that seems to be the norm for most of the exhibitions over there.

Molan, if you are planning to get over there make sure you put Memphis on your list of places to visit. It's a muso's paradise. You've got Stax, Sun Studios, Gibson factory, Gracelands, Beale Street, BB Kings, the list is endless.

  9. Bose have a forum for the L1 system http://bose.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/frm/f/7521050644 where you can find a lot of information both for and against. Uses generally fall into two very distinct camps, those who swear by them and those who swear at them.

Our band in a previous incarnation used 4 or these towers with associated bins for about 6 months. We were a 10 pc soul band with three vocalists and a three horn players, trying to use the complete system as PA and foldback – it was an absolute disaster causing so many disputes and arguments that the band finally split and reformed as an 8 piece using a conventional PA set-up with conventional mixing desk and sound engineer.

That’s not to say that the Bose L1 doesn’t have its uses. For individual backline amp for keyboards or acoustic guitar reinforcement the tower can sound very sweet and is also great for duo’s and three piece bands playing the coffee shop / wine bar circuits. For serious bass use however save your money and invest in something conventional.
