It very much depends upon the particular one; the better 70s/80s Japanese ones can be up to £500-600, with lower prices dependent upon brand, model, condition, etc.

IMHO, the current Chickenbackers are a pile of toot.

The main thing for me is that they are a bit of fun and not to get one thinking it's going to be better than a real Ric.

Yes, of course I never meant to even dare to compare them, even remotely, to the sound of the original Rick. I had a similar experience when a friend of mine wanted to compare his HB bird to my TBird.
I just kind of thought is as a chance to mod one and have fun with it, but I wondered if they are generally playable.

That would be a shame. One thing I actually respect Gibson for is their refusal to stamp their non-US guitars with the (lone) Gibson brand. Makes things less confusing. If you're buying a Gibson, you're getting a US made guitar. You might not be getting a good guitar, mind, but it will be made in the states.

I understand how you feel, however when money (and, more importantly, the lack of it) is the main factor, all other motives unfortunately go down the drain, and it's natural. Times are hard, on a global level.

Oh good, perhaps my 2017 EB4 will suddenly become a collector's piece, 'last of the real American Gibsons'. I was thinking of selling it, but maybe I should hang on for a while!

That's a damn good idea. I would buy all remaining pieces from the regional franchise. :D

I don't know if they've changed their stance in this but Gibson never sold Tbird pickups in the past as the originals were guaranteed not to go wrong IIRC.

Bartolini make a pickup matching the size and shape but I don't think it's a tonal match.

You are right, just checked their E-store and no mention of TBs. Thanks :)

  5. ...presuming one does not have both basses to compare.

Thing is, I bought a 2nd hand Epi TB which had (according to the original owner) Gibson pickups. How can one be sure that this is the case and they are not the (theoretically less good) Epi ones?

I searched the forum and, while I found a similar thread, didn't want to disrupt the conversation with my quite irrelevant question. If I am wrong, please do merge it or sth.

    Thanks in advance!

  6. Hello from Greece!

I was really glad when I found this forum. None of my (musician albeit not bass-playing) friends could understand my happiness about simple bass things, e.g. the sound of the flatwound strings on a semiacoustic :)
