Andy, I'll be selling one of my SC's when the 3x10 arrives. Not as small as a Super Midget mind you.

    Rob

Thanks for the offer Rob, but I don't think an SC is for me just now.

Alex recommends not running the SC and BB2 cabs together. I forget why. Maybe you could email him and find out?

I think I've heard that too. I was thinking about running a Super Mini T(nee Midget) with a BB2.

I use an Aguilar TH500 and SC for small gigs, for most bands an Aguilar AG700 or TH700 and SC/SM and for the very loud rocky stuff I'll swap the SC for a BB2. For playing at home I have 2 One10's. I'm not keen on the sound of the SM on it's own. I need more low end. I think the SM pairs well with the other cabs, adds mids and higher end. I rarely use 1 cab. IMO 2 always sound better, even at low volume.

IMO the difference in size and weight between the 112 cabs is minimal. For me that difference wouldn't make me use one cab over another. I choose my cabs for tone and volume.

Having heard SCs at the weekend, I don't think I consider the SC and BB interchangeable. But, that's all down to my uses. What I'm really interested in is how close the SM is to the BB. The absent low end you mention is not surprising. And that might be the thing that means I don't bother with the SM. I think I'd prefer an even more compromised sound for even less money. Or, just stick with the BB, which is lighter than my previous 150W practice combo.

I use a BB2 and a Super Midget.  That gives me a choice of three rigs.  For most gigs it's the BB2 on its own.

    Frank.

I have been wondering about this set up. I already have a BB2 and would like something a bit smaller for small gigs & practice. How do the two compare?

A question suddenly springs to mind - bass bashes traditionally seem to happen on a Sunday.  How was it for everyone this one being on a Saturday?

To me, it doesn't really matter - due to all the travelling involved I'd take a long weekend off my work anyway.  But just curious to those closer, was it good to have a buffer day before going back to work/regular routine?  Was getting up early on the Saturday a chore?  Were some people unable to attend due to gigging on the Sat night, or would gigging on the Saturday wipe you out for the Sunday anyway?

I've got today off, so the mind wanders... over to you (or not, I don't care - did I mention I have the day off? ;))

I think Saturday is probably better for me. But then again, I don't gig. Does a Sunday draw in folk who have playing commitments most Saturdays?

Unless the lest Sei models are completely new designs, I really can't see the point in playing one first if you already familiar with the concept.

When I had my Sei (Off-set Flamboyant 5-string fretless) made about 15 years ago, it was made specifically for me to my guidelines. The personal nature of the bass was brought home to me when I went to collect the finished instrument. While I was waiting for Martin to make some last-minute adjustments, I gave me another recently completed 5-string fretless Sei to play. The two instruments could hardly have been more different in feel, playability, and sound. I'm not that brilliant a player compared with the typical Sei user, but I even I could tell - the one made for me felt perfect. The other, while really nice, just didn't feel as though it fitted me.

This is an interesting perspective. I am learning a lot about the degree of control the luthier has in general, and how much Martin and John have in particular. I'll bear that in mind when I'm trying things out.

I have an Encore and a Stagg if that floats your boat?

If you mean, I can strap them to the underneath of my boat, to use the extra buoyancy, then yes please! She sits a little low in the water under the weight of my colossal ego.

Joking, of course. I don't own a boat.

Andy and I got quite deep into the subtleties and complexities of Barefaced 12's, and then comparing to other cabs, with other amps.

I do apologise for getting rather loud when @GreeneKing's GK Legacy 800 came out, through my pair of Super Compacts.

    Rob

Yes, I apologise for my part in that too. Thank you all for your indulgence!

It was very interesting just how different the cabs were.

The flamboyant is, for me, one of the most beautiful bass shapes available - gorgeous lines and incredibly well thought-through.  The only problems I ever encountered with Seis has been neck stability.  It's not really much of a problem as adjustment is easy and straightforward - my basses just needed very regular adjustment (Manchester can be pretty cold and damp!).

I do love the Flamboyant shape too. Mine is an Original, which is still pretty nice...

Interesting that you mention neck stability. I have noticed that too. My loft-based man-cave varies in temperature quite a lot, and I do notice surprising shifts in tuning and action. (Not serious, but more so than other basses in the same room.)

  9. I'll echo what the others have said. Thanks so much to @rwillett for organising, and him and his family for taking care of us so well on the day.

I had a fantastic time meeting everyone, and trying out all sorts of gear from the classic to the esoteric.

  10. I'm considering having a new bass built. Last time I was in the Gallery, John told me the instruments they made today were quite different (ie, better) than my old one. (No. 9!) I've had a long chat with Martin about options, but I'd like to see what they're building now for myself. So, does anyone have a Sei built since, say, 2010? Could I pop over and have a noodle on it?

    Other fancy brands also welcome.

I'm in Manchester. In the first instance, let's say an hour or so away? If I don't get much help within that area, I'll think about casting a wider net.

    Ta!

  12. You lucky devil. What a beautiful instrument. I am in the same position as you, having wanted one for 20 years. But I didn’t buy the first one I saw, as it was in a Cash Converters, and there was no chance of a (relatively) sensible price.

Thanks for the update on the Bass Doc. When I lived in Tyneside he was a great asset to the scene.

Haha, funny enough I was watching this concert earlier today. Steve Gadd & Anthony Jackson are both on it, with Dave Grusin and few other top, top players.

Had a listen to about half of that last night. Amazing stuff. I was kinda hoping for/expecting more small ensemble stuff, but there's nothing floats my boat like a jazz big band, and the rhythm section is clear as day in that recording. Thanks!

  14. I watched an old vid the other day where Steve Gadd is getting some lifetime achievement award, and Anthony Jackson is doing the bit where he talks up how great Steve is. He mentions that the two of them had worked together on a lot of projects. Anyone know of any recordings with these two greats working together? (Or, a place to search for this kind of information!)

  15. Great story. Always nice to hear about people getting out of financial trouble - good on you.

I'm not familiar with Moolons (I know the name, and the reputation, but not much more): What's the deal with that pickup? Is it a massive humbucker? Or a casing around a more traditional P-bass split? (Or something else)
