  1. I bought a Barefaced Super Compact cab from Mickey, fantastic condition. Was happy to meet halfway.

While we were chatting, he offered me his Markbass LM800 and was happy to let me to take it away to try it out! Needless to say that I bought that too...

    Top bloke. Many thanks Mickey

  2. Have been playing for three years or so and jam with once a week with a group of infinitely more experienced musicians. Also have been practicing with a 5 piece with a view to start gigging soon.

Although I have played a few gigs (mostly successful) and am improving slowly but steadily, I have never had the balls to play at a jam night.

Last night I took my drummer along to a local open mic for moral support, and lo and behold, managed to play for half an hour with no problems. Some material I knew, but some the house band guitarist showed me the chords. It helped that there were only a couple of other musicians in the pub so didn't feel intimidated.

That was a big deal for me, especially as I'm in my early 50s! Onwards and upwards...

Remember that this will be your first bass - stick around here long enough and you'll have many more!!

Seriously though, most of the best entry model basses have been listed above, also if you manage to come across a Westone Thunder 1a in budget, grab it!!. Do a bit of homework and contact your nearest BCer and see if they'll accompany you. Make a list and pop down to your local guitar stockist and try anything that you have on your list. Don't be cajoled into buying something that the salesman says is good but you haven't heard of.

For example, a few years ago Sue Ryder (yes, of Charity shop fame) were selling basses - initially well regarded but it soon became apparent that the frets were soft and wore over time...

I blame @AndyTravis for starting me on Yamahas but there are a few very nice examples currently available on ebay for around £150 - contact Andy for more advice if you decide to go this route.

If you're ever near Hatfield, get in contact, you're welcome to try the low end stuff I have.

+1 to the Westone Thunder, got me started a few years back...

  4. Cort GB4 Custom Bass for sale or trade. Little used and in unmarked, excellent condition, never gigged.

Genuine reason for sale: am playing in a classic rock covers band so just not getting any use.

Recent new stings and frets leveled and polished. Hard case included. Located near Gravesend in Kent.

Would consider trade for Mustang or passive short scale, am happy to put some cash in for the right bass.

Your best pick would be the Ampeg V4-B, all tube goodness, you wont need any other head in your life, paired with Ampeg 212 AV cab is the best P Bass sound you can get for a decent price or ...you can get a class D amp (or hybrid one) that can emulate pretty well that sound but those that emulate well cost the same as the real deal, so...

Thanks - the V4-B looks ideal, hopefully not too heavy to lug around. No where's my nearest Ampeg dealer! I'll try a few out and report back.

    Cheers to all

It's very difficult to describe how something sounds and we all like and look for different things. If you're thinking of spending proper money, you really need to go and audition stuff. Don't take anyone else's word - have a look at all the recent, high quality kit that's for sale. It's all good, but obviously didn't suit people, so they're trying to move it on. A day out at Bass Direct or a similar retailer who has all or most of the decent brands in stock will pay dividends in the long run. I went to BD to audition heads and ended up buying something I had barely considered because I found I preferred it to the ones that were on my short list when I tried it out for real.

Yes of course - I guess I just wanted a steer on what to look for initially.

I've got the RH750 and use it with a Barefaced two10.  Suits me perfectly when I have to use backline (usually HELIX and in-ears).

Having said that, you also wont go far wrong with the MarkBass setup you mention.  Bass Direct have a s/h LMtube500 at the moment...£399 with a flight case.

Thanks for the info. Have you tried different cabs with the RH750?

  8. I've had a TC Electronic RH450 running through a K210 cab for about 18 months and I'm thinking of changing the cab. I'm just not happy with the tone - maybe a bit too modern for my liking - it sounds clipped and too harsh when pushed hard. I play mainly classic rock and want that 'vintage' Precision sound, but I'm just not getting it with this setup. I just really don't like the tone when playing live.

I have considered other heads but thought the clever thing to do would be to replace the cab and see where I go from there. Anyone else felt the same with the TC stuff?

I don't mind spending decent money on the right gear, am looking to spend up to six or seven hundred quid max on a cab I suppose.

Alot of the guys I see locally have MarkBass rigs - most of whom sound great, so have also considered a Little Mark Tube 500W head + 102HF 4 ohm cab.

    Suggestions welcomed!

    Cheers

About to order a set of flats for my Precision and have no idea what to try. I've always used rounds so want to get something that's going to feel similar in tension. As for tone then just a balanced, warm rounded tone. Not after a big, fat, deep old school thump. Tempted to try the LaBella 760FL but worried about tension and being too thumpy. Fender's sound interesting but dont want anything too bright. Half tempted to try the Adagio ones but dont want my first proper taste of flats to be ruined.

    Any suggestions?

I've just put La Bella Low Tension flats on my Precision and first impressions are very nice feel and they sound ace. Be interesting to see how much they loosen up as they settle in...

The best bit of advice I was given when I started was that as long as you start together, stop together and smile together, no one notices the bit in the middle. I thought they were joking but it’s surprisingl true. There have been a couple of car crash moments when we have murdered a song but never has anyone commented on it. Quite the opposite on one occasion where we did a short set and for some reason just weren’t on it (borrowed kit,  no set up time didn’t help) but we had people raving about us, in a good way, on Facebook.

Played a gig last night with 20 of my family and friends in the audience. Went well, no pink torpedo-ups until the last number when the drummer completely forgot his lines. Drumming totally out of time. Me and the lead guitarist tried to keep things together, he got back into it and we finished OK. I thought it sounded like a disaster but speaking to my family and mates afterwards, not one person noticed...

  11. I'm after a new strap for my MIJ precision. It's quite a bit lighter than my Cort GB4 jazz so the chunky leather strap that I bought for the Cort is too big and uncomfortable on the P.

I'm looking at a material strap, does anyone have any suggestions that are light-ish weight and comfy?

    Cheers
