  1. Just adjusted my double bass bridge down to where the strings are 5-8mm off the end of the fingerboard. It really brings out the growl, it's easier to get around, and it's a bit kinder on my hands given I don't get as much practice time as I'd like. But I feel like the old-school "real players dig in" guys will disapprove!

I had a couple of lessons with the Mighty Danny Thompson, back in 2008. He played my Bass and immediately asked me why I had the action so high. I told him so I could dig in and get a big sound. "That's a load of bollocks Mart, a complete myth", came the reply. He told me to play his Bass, Victoria. So I did, and it was by far the easiest Bass to play and had the lowest action, but every note rang out like a bell. Of course, I still sounded like me, and when Danny was playing my Bass, he still sounded like Danny, but that's a different topic.
I did lower the action on mine, with great results. Interestingly, I had a lesson from Steve Berry last year, and he has a lowish action too. Nothing wrong with that lads tone.
