  1. Maybe it has to do with the context of the sentence.  Here's some examples where one would be used over the other.  "Who did you get as a singer in your new band?" ,  "I play bass and do background vocals",  "Alright lads,  we've got the instrument tracks recorded,  let's put down the vocals."  Man,  the new singer in my band is a flaming *$@^&*(_*!!!"

  2. Every instrument has strengths and limitations.  The upright bass has a long history of 4 strings. Leo, who made the first commercial bass chose 4. So much ground breaking and ground shaking music was made with a 4.  I don't need more than 4.  If you need 5 or 6 or 8 or 12 do what you're called to do.  I think most professionals will have options in their quiver,  but I still think the standard for all is a four.

Indeed. Very American - massive self justification, anything rather than simply admit one is wrong or has made a mistake. I played in a band with s similar fellow from across the pond once. He was a nightmare; he actually told me on one occasion "I NEVER make mistakes". Needless to say, I didn't hang around for long. His wife, who was/is a good musician (she played keys and sang), used to carry him - nodding cues at him, counting him in for breaks, etc, etc. Sometimes, he didn't even tune his guitar before we started playing. If you reminded him, he'd act all insulted.

So.....a post on Jeff Berlin turns into a slag on Americans?  Shame on you!  After my grand-dad said such nice things about your grand-mum in 1944.

  4. I play in a duo where I sing and play guitar.  I also play bass and do bv in a 4 piece playing "red dirt" country (modern alternative country from Texas/Oklahoma).  The singer who does some solo gigs called and wanted to use a duo at a bar-b-que place,  but the guitarist didn't like the money offered so the singer asked me to back him on guitar.  Did the gig,  got more money than expected and free ribs.  Singer called  said he missed the bass,  getting more money,  so now the guitarist is in,  it'll be a 3 piece for the next 3 gigs.  Same money for me.  So.....either he really missed the bass,  or he likes the other guy better on guitar (he is good).  I don't care.  I'm getting money for nothin' and my ribs for free!

  5. I don't know about England,  which from my perspective,  had an inordinate number of Clive's and Trevor's and Ian's and Mick's,  over here the old names like Frank and Paul and Joe and John and Richard and William aren't heard anymore amoung the young.  There seems to be a plethora of Dylan's though.

  6. I see both sides.  They want to do this gig and make some cash,  however,  if you're doing originals and trying to build a following,  this will be a different band.  They should go out under a different name for this one-off.  Also,  gear costs money.  Who's going to take responsibility if your pa gets messed up?  Wish them well for the gig and let them sort out their own gear.

  7. I played drums and did bv in a  Waylon Jennings tribute 3 piece  a few years back.  Before I auditioned,  I listened to a "best of" CD.  Very sparce drums.  Apparently,  no other drummer auditioning was willing or able to play so simply so I got the gig.  Was fun til I moved.

  8. Hate songs?  No.  I might hate particular renditions of songs,  like a drunk girl who can't sing doing  "Me and Bobbi McGee" ,  but it's not the song's fault.  It's a great song when Kristofferson does the original.  Any song can be made better.  Take "Sugar,  Sugar" by the Archies.  I don't like it,  but listen to Wilson Pickitt's version.  He transforms the song.  A guy I played with once told me,  you might not like playing a particular song,  but you're being payed a dollar to play it.  Actually,  about 2.50,  40 songs a night- 100 bucks a gig.  It's a job,  I'm a pro......okay,  semi-pro but I conduct myself like a pro.  I'm there to make money so I can buy more cool gear.
