1. I'd rather spend a little bit more on Status or Rotosound, they're pretty good strings and last OK.

Personally I buy DR's, though at the moment I'm using R.Cocco strings. I figure they cost more, but they're reliable and last a lot, lot longer. I can easily get 5 or 6 months out of a set, that's playing for probably 5 or 6 hours most days too.

2. Some more photos of the Calibas. These were taken back in the Summer. It has since been refinished at the Jaydee workshop.

This really is a very beautiful bass, and I will be very sorry to see her go.

Neither the Rabbit or the chicken are included in the sale :).

I am open to realistic offers on the Calibas. I really don't know how much it is worth. It's probably the flagship model in John's Supernatural series, and a new 6 string model would cost at least £3500.

3. I have a big life changing event taking place in January, and need to raise some cash to pay for it.

The Mark King bass is now sold :)

Calibas 6 string bass, this is probably the flagship of the Supernatural line. I read somewhere that it's an conservationist's nightmare with all the wood used. It's certainly an amazing looking and very creative bass.

This is quite a very rare bass, not many have been made, and they don't come up for sale too often. In fact I did a search on here and didn't find a single one.

This particular bass was made for Roger Inniss, it was ordered as a birthday present for him by his girlfriend.

It's a 1988 model, and is in really nice condition. It was recently refinished in the original satin finish by John. It does still have a few very minor marks on the body, but nothing really major, and they won't photograph.

It was also fully serviced and set up by John, he also fitted a new truss rod to the bass.

It features a 7 piece maple and mahogany neck, with a thick ebony 24 fret board with mother of pearl dots in the usual places.
The body is a sandwich of ash, and I think rosewood as the accent wood.
The facings (front and rear) are quilted maple. There's a centre core of a much darker wood (I'm not sure what that is).

The controls are volume and passive tone, and the active circuit features bass, treble and mid cut or boost, and a presence control which kind of adds sparkle to the highs.
Pickup selection is via the three touch pads, there's an LED above each pad so you can see at a glance which one is selected.
The Jazz type Supernatural pickups are John's own design.

It's quite a heavy beast, but balances superbly, and doesn't feel too uncomfortable because of this. I can easily do a days practice followed by a 2 hour gig.

Personal collection is preferable for both instruments.

I'd like £1600 for the Calibas.

I welcome trades for any of the following on the Calibas, either 5 or 6 string basses - Sei, Modulus, Zon, Smith, Marleaux, Overwater, maybe Status. With a cash adjustment as required.

4. I bought this from a great guy on here a few weeks ago. It's in really great condition, just a couple of marks on the top where it's been slid into a rack, the front is perfect though.

I've just bought something else though..............again !

This has just been fully serviced by Rob at Pro Audio in Swadlincote.

It works great, and sounds great, I just don't need two preamps though.

I'd like £300 for it, which is a bargain considering the quality of the pre, and the fact that it's just been fully serviced.

5. It's funny but a guy I know said something funny (and slightly disrespectful too) the other day. I'm not going to mention names, but I'm sure many guys on here have met him or know him.

He mentioned the other week that he'd always wanted a red Mark King Jaydee bass. So I took mine into show him. He played it and said what a nice example it was. He then went onto say that he wouldn't consider buying one because he's moved on from them, and so has his playing.

A good friend of mine has toured with Steve Hackett (amongst many others), his main bass is a relatively cheap Aria 5 string. He's an amazing player. It's the player and not the bass that matters.

As long as the bass is well set up, and feels comfortable to play then that's all that matters. Sound/tone is mostly down to the player too, in my opinion.

6. I came very close to buying a used 6 string one a couple of years ago. I actually put a deposit down on it. I spent a couple of hours playing it in the shop, then went back the following week and played it again, that's when I changed my mind over it.

It was a superbly constructed bass, but it wasn't really any better than any other bass that I could have bought for even a quarter of the money that was wanted for it.

My main bass now is a 23 year old Jaydee Calibas 6 string. It has been expertly set up and serviced by John Diggins, he also re-sprayed it for me. I would say without hesitation that it is equally as good as any Fodera. There's also the added benefit of the builder having his workshop only 10 miles away from where I live.

7. To be honest I'd have thought most long scale strings would fit. I'm currently using, and enjoying R. Cocco strings, they seem plenty long enough.

One thing I've got to say. I've been using Overwater nickels for a couple of years now. The last two sets I've had though, the low B has been dead from the minute I've got it out of the packet. Same goes for the last two sets of Status strings too.
