1. Ok – Up for grabs is my immaculate Traynor YBA200-2, purchased new and imported from Uncle Sam in October last year.

Reason for selling is that the American built SVT CL I’ve been looking for finally came up a few weeks after buying the Traynor (figures… :P ) so the Traynor’s got to go.

If you’re not already familiar with it, the specs can be found here –

    http://www.traynoramps.com/products.asp?ty...t=40&id=399

I’ve replaced the Sovtek 12AX7’s & EH 12AU7 originally supplied with the amp with NOS Phillips Cryo 12AX7 & 12AU7 from Watford Valves (about £100 worth). Like many other people, I found the Sovteks broke up a little too early. The new valves really improved the clean headroom and give a warm, warm bass. I’ll include the originals so you can mess about and find what suits you best.

On this later model Traynor did away with the self bias circuitry, which I believe caused a few problems and now relies on the more standard ‘probe with a DMM and twiddle screwdriver in appropriate place’ type biasing method.

Also, the later model comes laden with four KT88’s to loosen the plaster on the walls of your chosen venue. :)

I’ll throw in a UK to US mains transformer and the flightcase shown in the photos – it’s not a custom fit jobby (s’what the SVT came over in..) but it’s good protection nevertheless.

Altogether the amp, freight, duty, VAT and new valves came to about £690.

    Yours for £460.

If you can get over to me near Milton Keynes (during office hours - sorry ;) ), you’re more than welcome to have a cuppa and try it with your own cabs or my two SVT 15” thumpers.

    Cheers

  2.
my fifty pence worth..

ive had an all valve ampeg svt classic for nine years now, and have learnt a couple of lessons i will gladly pass on based on my own experience.

    1) buy something with a good established rep, do whatever you have to do to find the money..(i had to sell a bleeding motorbike!! for a bloody bass amp!!)

    2) find a really, really good valve tech who will do your servicing and repairs, someone who genuinly knows what they are doing, and only ever let him touch it, and whatever he suggests let him do.

    3) buy a good quality well padded flight case, made slightly higher internally so you keep a spare amp base shaped square of foam on top of it inside the cab, and take that out and put it on your cab before sitting the amp down onnit at gigs, to stop the cab vibes transmuting to your valves(dunno if thats a word or not but i like it ;) )

err, thats about it i think. my amp is trouble free, gets as hot as hell at some of the venues we play and gets used every weekend, hard. it always provokes comment on how good it sounds, though the ev loaded 4x10 mesa cab is a big part of that too. i'd like to think it will be the only amp i ever play for the rest of my life, though the weight, especially flight cased, is immense. and the last time i saw colin hodgkinson, even he had given in and was using a markbass...

one last thing, ive only had to have a total revalve twice now, but both times using decent matched valves it required a second mortgage.. :P

    enjoy..
IMO absolutely spot on!

Nothing like the common sense approach!

    Well done that man!

  3. Just bought Annemaries' MIM Jazz

Top lady! Even delivered the bass personally (sadly I was unable to receive it in person.. Entirely my fault ;) )

    All went really smoothly.

    Many thanks AM :P

  4. Where you'll be able to score is SERVICE!!

Have a box of odds 'n' sods to fix up somebodys' instrument that's just done a dive and they've got a gig in three hours time.

If someone doesn't appear to be in a hurry, maybe offer them a cuppa and have a chat.

I'm on my own with my business, and you sometimes have to bust your ass for what feels like nothing, but every now and then it pays off!

Apologies if I've come over as being a patronising pri*ck - just let me know and I'll get me coat! ;)

  5.
It will vary a little betwwen manufactures but a 6550 has a load resistance of about 4K and a 6L6 about 3K8-6K6 in class AB push-pull so if should be okay on that side of things. a re-bais will be a must.

6L6 heater current is 0.9A - 6550 = 1.6A so unless the amp has an overspec'd heater supply then it's not going to work.

A KT88 and 6550 are almost the same thing so KT88's will not help.

    regards

    Nice one! :)

Thanks very much Dave, much appreciated!

  6. Only cure is more gear I'm afraid! (I think that comes from the bassist part of me!) Part of the joy of playing the bass is collecting new gear, and continually searching out new things to enjoy and try out. If it's what makes you happy, at the end of the day why cure it? :)

Hey! Hector's my kinda guy! Although he can clearly play - I can't play for sh*t but I've got loads of nice gear!

    Welcome aboard Hector!

  7.
Hi Grahame,

I will check the figures and get back to you. I would think it should be fine but I would be more interested in the output transformers load impedance, I think they are near each other but best to check.

    Dave
Nice one Dave.

    Thanks very much :)

BTW I've been using one of your VT1 EQ Bass Drives and I'm very impressed!

  8. Hi Dave,

I've got a nice little Ampeg B25 currently running with 6L6GC's - I thought it might be fun to try popping a couple of 6550's in there to see how it sounds.... I'm a bit concerned about the screen voltage being a little high for the 6550 and maybe the heater current a bit heavier on the transformer.

    Whaddya think?

    Cheers Grahame :)

  9. Dave's taken my Squier VMJ Fretless off my hands. The man has remarkable patience which came to light when my 'overnight delivery' became 3 1/2 days delivery.....! Very pleasant and straightforward chap to deal with! Cheers Dave! :)

    How much?
I offered it to Simon for £140 including overnight courier. The bass is only about 3 months old from new.. I just can't get on with the lined board. :)

    Most kind Sir!! :)

It's still up for grabs if anyone's interested!

  12.
Q-Tuners are superb. I have recently built a Jazz copy with a Mighty Mite ebanol fretless neck and a single pickup in the bridge position. Probably one of the best fretless sounds I have ever heard. Have a look at it in the link on my signature.
Erno Zwaan at Q-Tuner also does replacement Jazz pups that should fit the standard routing
Most impressive looking stuff! :)
