Evening all,
I'm looking to purchase a set of flatwounds and I'm a bit confused over the tension thing! Done a bit of reading but I'm more confused than before I started!
I usually go for 105 - 85 - 70 - 50 in round wounds but the flats are going on my Jazz and I prefer a slightly thinner string for that, like a 105 - 85 - 65 - 45 set as I like are thinner D and G. Looking at La Bella's and there are tonnes of variations with number and letters which I'm assuming refer to the tension?!
With the rounds I use Ernie Ball and have never thought about tension, just the gauge. I've tended to go for a thicker gauge recently as I play really hard! I don't use a pic either but I just seem to pull at my strings quite aggressively when I'm in the groove! I don't like strings to feel like elastic bands that move all over the place too easily, if that makes sense?!
So, any advice on what tension/gauge you guys think I'm after would be hugely appreciated. I'm after a 5 string set too.
Cheers, J. -

Morning all!
I've recently started listening to the band Vulpeck and NEED that bass sound!
Apparently the bassist uses La Bella flatwounds on a Fender Mexican jazz, from what I've read.
Just wondered what brands people use for flats, I used to use Rotosound years ago on my musicman but I'm going to be swapping the strings on my Fender Jazz.
Cheers, J. -
This case is now up for £25. For some reason it wouldn't let me edit the original title and I didn't realise it's only £37 new!

Selling my Markbass combo due to fancying a change.
Amazing amp, loud as hell and superb tone.
Includes Markbass Velcro bass holder that cost me £15 separate!
Pretty good all round condition with the a few minor marks that can be seen on photos. Carpeting is looking a bit tired on the top. Very lightweight for a combo due to the Neodymium speakers.
Willing to travel within reasonable distance and open to trades for a class D head (ideally TC RH750) or sensible offers. Based in Doncaster.
HAPPY TO ARRANGE COURRIER AT BUYERS COST.

I'd be very tempted by this if it's still available when my current set up sells!

Thanks for all the advice people. Think I do really need to go somewhere and try a load of gear out really, nothing beats using your own ears!

Thanks for the replies people.
To answer a few questions:
I play fingerstyle and don't use a plectrum.
I have a 2001 MIM 5 string Fender jazz deluxe and a G&L L2500 5 string that I use the most for gigging in my current function band playing, funk/soul/pop/disco.
I own a Music Man SUB (US made) too but rarely play it.
I suppose I'm mainly after the HiFi sound, no distortion basically! I've found the jazz bass can sound a bit distorted at higher volumes when I'm gigging but not sure if this is down to the output when I turn the active EQ up.
I also play quite hard! I high 105 to 70's on my G&L and 105 to 65 on my jazz...
Hope this helps! -
Morning all,
I'm looking at getting a new rig and flogging my current gear. Currently running a Mark Bass CMD102P with a GK 1 x 15 but fancy something new. (This isn't a sale post mods!)
Been a long time since I've bought a new amp or cab and keep seeing lots of makes that I'm not that familiar with! Bergantino, Vanderkley and Barefaced all seem to be regarded as top cabs. Tempted by a TCRH750 head but not sure what to pair it with, maybe a 1 x 12...
Anyone else on here strive for the clean, funky/soul sound that can offer advice?
Cheers, J. -
I'm interested in the amp but would like to try it first. Lemington Spa is a long way from me though! I'm in Doncaster, South Yorkshire...
