What mic are you using to record these lessons Geoff? Your bass sounds lush!

Sadly I've got out of the habit of practising daily on upright for the last six months or so because I haven't had a regular gig for it, but your videos are great for making me feel all spirited about it again. I'll have to remember to check them out earlier in the evening tomorrow, I think my neighbours would be less than impressed if I started playing this late. :(

It's a Heil PR40, I'm glad you like it, I don't know much about mic's but have been really happy with it.
Im also being really bad at getting those practice hours in and need to get back on it! I know what you mean about the neighbours though :-)

2. +1 on the strings, they would be my first point of call...possibly the pickup? I think the GK combo is a great amp, but I guess you will also get a different tone from other amps. It's a tough one and if at all possible a bit of testing out some amps first would be well worth it.

And I also agree that the extension cab might be useful. I used one for a long time and it did always sound better and they are very light.... It might just give you more of the same though and not the extra thickness you are looking for.
Good luck, cheers Geoff

Hi Geoff. I've just discovered your site today. Absolutely fantastic - thank you. I'm starting DB after many years of electric bass, and I know your lessons will save me picking up a lot of bad habits and speed me up enormously.

Great stuff Bruce, I'm glad they help. Cheer Geoff

Here's a new lesson I released today on 1 octave major scales in D and Eb major.

I wouldn't bother changing as you already have the plat. Both are good and I like the simplicity of the Fdeck, but the Plat does a great job and as you say the XLR is great.

5. It all sounds like work worth doing, but I'm sorry to hear the dreaded MOT has scuppered things. Fingers crossed you will get them done soon as I think a good set up can transform an instrument and how much you enjoy playing it. My bass is pretty basic, but it has been completely rebuilt since I bought it, including a neck graft and after years of tweaking by Martyn Bailey the set up is superb.

6. + 1 there are a lot of great sounding pizzicato strings which all sound and feel very different. I agree that careful listening to bassists you like will help, but it is a tricky process.
A great place to start would be to decide if you prefer regular, heavy or light gauge. From there thomastik Spirocore strings are very well respected for jazz pizz, I also use Pirastro Evah Pirazzi light gauge. I also like D'Addario strings, Pirastro Obligato and a few others. I would check out this page for a very rough idea of the differences: http://www.hervejeanne.de/saitenmatrix.php

7. Bozo is such an incredible person and teacher. Every few months he used to fly in and teach every bassist in the college for a few days. It was long individual lessons, as well as group lesson and he was incredible to be around. Seemingly endless energy and talent, but a really kind person too. He is a hugely inspiring person!

Spiro weichs and fishman full circle on way from thomman, then of back to peter hall at Beverley for new bridge/strings/full circle fitting and probably a alteration of the fingerboard relief.

Great choice Jez, that will be a awesome combination!

9. Here's a brand new video lesson on walking bass lines.... I find that when you start out creating your walking bass lines using arpeggios they can sound a bit plain. This lesson is to help add more melodic shape and phrasing to keep the lines interesting, before you develop them with extra notes such as chromatic leading notes, etc...

10. Hey Jez, welcome back mate :-) it's great you are playing upright again and I love those westbury basses. Good choice. I would look at lowering the action & you may find you get used to the spiros. However I find the Mittel gauge hard work on the hands so do prefer the Weichs. I'm a bit of a wimp though and perhaps over time I would get used to them.

Happy Christmas! Cheers Geoff

11. Merry Christmas everyone! I have loved being a member of Basschat this year and have learnt loads from everyone on here. I also really appreciate everyone being so positive about my video lessons.
I hope everyone has an amazing 2014 and we all get a new double bass from Father Christmas this year :-) ........ or even just some new rosin....

....and get well soon Roger, I hope you are back giging again very soon.
Cheers Geoff
