Christmas Prezzy

I've read some reviews here http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...+Jazz+Bass/10/1 and it seems that the noisy pick up problem can be helped considerably by screening the pickup cavities and the control cavities with sticky backed copper foil. As everyone commented it was worse when using the pickups in single mode. No problems with thread stealing, I was hoping it would provoke discussion They're a really nice bass aren't they. Whats the difference between "Crafted in Japan" and "Made in Japan" ? (apart from the obvious of course ) BTW
  2. Picked this up yesterday evening, put it down to go to bed and again to go to work. Nice guitar, going to see if it needs the Tommy Thompson mods, put lighter strings on and lower the action a tickle. Needs the screening mods too but still very impressed with it.
  3. Hi Guys and Gals. Wondering if you can help. Picked up my Hofner and discovered the bridge pickup wasn't working. So, being a Bio Tech, I took it to work to try and fix it. Turns out the pup is knacked 8M ohm v's the working pickups 8K ohm. Anyone know where I can get a new one or get the original rewound? Thanks in advance. Tig.
  4. No particular order but these three spring to mind. Simon Gallup, The Cure Leigh Gorman, Bow wow wow Stuart Morrow, New model army You could guess my age from these choices

    Setups

Hi Guys and Gals. Just a couple of quick q's 1: Do you have to have a differnet bridge (higher) to do Rockabilly slap. I just can't seem to get away with it. Instrument does have a nice warm tone when played finger style so I'm convinced that this D/B is set up for jazz. 2: Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced pick up trans ducer set up for D/B's Thanks in advance. Tig
  6. Guess it's a tale thats been told before but me best mate wanted to form a band, I was 15 and wanted to be cool too. He already sang and played guitar and knew a drummer, so the only way to join in was play bass. Ended up getting a columbus or summink from the catalog along with an amp. The amp kept blowing the power transistors at inopportune moments (I'd started work as an apprentice sparky so that helped getting stuff fixed). We started playing country stuff then rebelled and joined a ska band. Never really got to gig much as the pair of us were always changing bands (punk, rock, new wave etc think late 70's early to mid 80's) but we rehearsed a lot. Anyway the line up eventually sort of stabalised and we rehearsed for a twice a week for a year before playing to a live audience with our own material. The guys wanted to get serious but I'd never give up my day job. So we went our seperate ways. Played in loads of cover bands after (sometimes 3 -4 times a week) It all got a bit too much what with shift work and stuff but I still record with my best mate now and again. He's never given up hope and has gained a reputation as an excellent producer locally. Gave it all up to persue my other hobby (see avatar) about 10 years ago but still have all my gear. Still get pangs when I go to watch the bands locally. Maybe one day.

    Just saying Hi
LOL welcome aboard Tig. Any ideas for an avatar yet?
Haven't really thought about it, maybe Clyde fron the Clint Eastwood "every which way" series of films, or maybe Bubbles from "trailer park boys". I'll give it some thought.
Simon Gallup is great too. Mind you, I've never been able to get to grips with playing the bass below my knees!!
Well my legs aint too long anyway but my arms are, maybe I should have said, short, fat and hairy and orang utang like. At least no one can nick my car without adjusting the seat for half an hour.

    Just saying Hi
Nice to have another Shoe Gazer on board!! I still reckon Michael Dempsey was the best bassist the Cure had.
What am I thinking! Tolhurst was the drummer!, Dempsey was the original bassist followed by Simon Gallup So I have to agree. Another bassist that springs to mind was Stuart Morrow from New Model Army (Although he was probably the guitarist Doh!)
  10. Just saying Hi, Mid 40's short, fat and hairy, I've been playing since my early teens. Sort of retired now but still have most of my gear. Influences are many but Lol Tolhurst always springs to mind. So this little lot is what I have these days. Stentor 1950, first double bass I 've owned always fancied one and bought it off ebay for £250ish. I guess this is the one I play the most now seeing as it "lives" down stairs. Keep meaning to put some sort of pick up on it. Play it every day. I think it sounds real sweet but I don't really have that much experiences with DB's. 1965 Hofner violin. Nice condition and with the original case. Played thru a chorus or flanger sounds very Cure ish or New Order. Plays fast and is good for chords. 1988 Warwick Thumb 5 string. Bought in '92, this was my workhorse, retired now. like me. Still really good condition but has a few knocks and knicks (again like me). Found it to be very versatile. Clean sound recorded too. Bass Machine 4 string fretless. It was cheapish, can't remember when I got it, just got it to try fretless stuff. Took to it strieght away and couldn't put it down for a year. In reality it's a bit limited tonally but did a fair passing of Pino's sound through effects (to my ravaged ear drums anyway). These go through a Trace Elliot SMX 12, 4 x 10. I cant recollect exactly when I got this either. I think it was 93 but I'm not sure. Anyway here's a quick pic, Nice talkin to ya. I do have a couple of regrets. 1: Wish I didn't have to sell all the bass guitars I'd owned especially the early streamer with the pre amp on vero board! and the mid 70's Jazz bass. 2: Not attending the audition when the Cure were looking for a new bass player.
