The idea is to make people sound good and no one helps the bigger cause glossing over fundementals like
poor time, no groove and no ears for the gig.

    + 1 for this.
I've played with loads of drummers who play their best fill at the end of every 8 bars, only to rush/wreck the tempo & confuse singers/ horns or whoever. Or guys not knowing or articulating the structure of a tune

Playing with a good drummer is truly a beautiful thing!

Steve Harris only uses two, confirmed in his recent interview with Bass Player magazine.

I use a three-finger technique 99% of the time, but ring finger is used for string damping and first note-plucking when moving up a string. a bit like what Gary Willis does.

An interesting thing about Gary Willis' right hand technique is the angle of his wrist- it's totally straight! On his DVD he says that this reduces tension and fatigue, which makes a lot of sense to me. I've tried his hand position instead of my standard crooked wrist position, but I can't seem to get an even attack with both fingers... Must persevere 😐
For most stuff I use two fingers, but I practice with three for some situations (fast grace notes/ runs and string crossing).

  3. Hello forum,

I've been hanging around on the edges of Basschat for ages and have always found it a useful source for gear reviews/ comparisons and tech-y stuff, with happier vibes than Talkbass 😎. I'm a bassist/ pianist and music teacher in the Leicestershire/ Rutland area. My main interests are improvised music, jazz and nu-soul sort of stuff. I play in a function band and do a bit of musical theatre, combo, big band and accompanying gigs (whatever's going!).
My main axe is currently an MTD Kingston 6 string, usually going through an Ampeg PF800, with a (hopefully) cool fretless p/j bass in the works...
I'm looking forward to becoming part of the forum!
    Happy days,
    Will
