  1. Cheers, I've checked out that website and the problem seems to be that Less Than Jake aren't an overly well known band, with my song of choice being even lesser known. I'll persevere though, and see what I can do.

  2. Thanks for the help, I'll check that website out!

Leeds College of Music, Hull and BIMM are my main choices. As I've not been offered anything yet I've only got limited information, but so far from what I can find Leeds want me to prepare two pieces. One technical focus and one to show off me. BIMM want one piece to be prepared, again one that isn't necessarily too technical but one that I can really get into. I have been told by a lecturer that I will be asked to show off different techniques, scales and theory aside from the piece(s). I'm guessing I should probably wait to see if anywhere wants me to audition, and until they send further information, it's just that I want to be as prepared as possible.

By the way the courses are all Popular Music if that makes any difference.

Also, at Leeds there is a group section for the audition, where I believe you are put into some form of band to see how you work with others. This doesn't require any preparation, but maybe I'll be tested on charts here? You also get 30 mins of warm up time before the individual section, which seems a lot to me. This could also involve some charts/side Readings?

  3. Firstly, I'm not too sure if this is the right place for this topic, but I'll give this a go anyway...

I'm applying to uni to study music and therefore will need to audition in order to get in. I have chosen some pieces that I think will show off my playing as well as the type of music I'm into. My first piece is a solo bass composition, so in the audition room there will be no problems. However the other piece(s) are songs that I will be playing the bass line to. What you guys do in order to get a high quality backing track (preferably with lyrics, but I can't imagine this is possible) without the bass? The piece in question at the moment is Plastic Cup Politics by Less Than Jake.

    Thanks

    Lovely bass mate, congratulations!
Can you give us more info on the THD circuit?...

    Cheers,

Rather than one continuously variable tone pot, it is a five-way selector with presets for the tone. I believe there is an individual capacitor for each setting. It basically just makes the tone control more useable rather it being on, off or somewhere in middle. Hope that helps

  5. I've had this bass for a few days now and have finally got round to taking some pictures so here it is!

It's a Shuker J Bass Custom, and had been waiting for a buyer for a while, so when I took my Fender P to Jon for a fret level (which cost half what I was quoted by a local luthier, and the work was impeccable), I thought I'd have a play, and then I had to buy it!

The feel of the bass is far superior to any bass I've played before, including Sadowsky Metros and American Fenders. The Aaron Armstrong pickups are lovely and along with the THD tone circuit and coil splitting switch I am able to get a whole range of tones, from vintage sounding through to modern hifi tones. The carbon reinforcement in the neck is also a big plus for me.

I'd recommend Jon to anyone, whether you want a bass to be built or just some form of setup. His work is fantastic and his prices are great. I mean, I got a hand built instrument for less than a Fender or Gibson!

Here are some more pics anyway...

A bit blurry but you can see the grain and the stainless steel frets!

There we have it, my new bass!

  6. I recently bought Karl's Jazz Bass Special, which I have to say is a fantastic instrument. He was more than willing to meet halfway, which made the collection process incredibly simple, whilst also removing the worry of a courier. I would very happily buy from Karl in the future as the sale went so smoothly; just a day after the bass was put on hold, I had it in my hands!

    Thanks once again Karl!
