I`ve not so much become a wimp as have just found that my permanent shoulder injury prevents me from carrying heavy gear, but doesn`t prevent me from carrying light gear. If the very light gear were not around I`d just have to buy the lightest of the old heavy stuff, leave it in the car all the time, and get help at rehearsals and gigs.

Hopefully by now people will have realised I am of course playing devils advocate and so have total respect for you and anyone who modern tech has helped, whatever, weight or size. As for parking, so far its was never an issue for me but having not been a regular in London I can not comment but only sympathise.

You'd almost imagine people buy cars on a whim without thinking, wouldn't you?

I have people to do that and I can honestly say I never asked how many MPG my car does to the gallon befoe buying it, though I do know it has 12 cylinders two turbo chargers and is limited to 200mph :-)

3. Weight. Thats what I am taking about, when I started playing back in the late 1970s (yep, really am that ancient) bass stacks were big and heavy.

We had two transits to lug around our equipment, the PA alone took two men just to move each cab, and there were six of them.
My amp was a 4 x 10 Trace Elliot combo, at the time relatively small compared to other people 8 x 12 Marshall stacks, but it was still heavy. Very heavy, I know because until last month I still owned it.

Until recent;y i had never even considered the weight of a Bass, it was what it was, yet now I keep seeing 'how much does it weigh' in replies to adverts - OK, i am sure there are some people who have back / medical issues, but not that many surely!

Same with equipment, number if times I have seen people with small lightweight cabs kidding themselves that that 8mm chipboard ply is going to produce the same sound as 15mm marine plywood is amazing. Go and try and lift up a professional full range B&W studio monitor, or even a high end home hifi, its massively heavy and there is a reason for that.

So, whats with the weight thing, have we all become wimps

4. Well, after all that I decided NOT to paint the bass black, was 100% sure that was what i wanted (same with the Alembic i a, selling) the black pick-guard arrived and i just tried it on the existing sunburst body, and I love it! Saves messing about with the paint and so can always return it to original if I sell etc -

5. Quite a long time ago, must be around 1990 I was sitting in the waiting room of a holistic centre in in Bath waiting for a friend who worked there and just chatting about the weather to the guy next to me. After me left my mate came out and said you do realise who that was. Mope. None other then Peter Gabriel, ironically one of my heroes.

Fast forward to last year and am at the Walnut Tree restaurant near Abergavenny when I recognise the voice coming from the table next to me, this time I recognised Peter. As we were about to leave I popped to the loo, guess who came in and stood at the next urinal, yep Peter but this time i could not resist saying hello (bit odd given the location I know). On the way out he actually held the door open for me, what a nice , totally normal, totally unassuming chap.

6. I have wanted a Ric for over 30 years, ended up with the usual Precision, not so unusual Aluminium neck Kramer, an Alembic and an early active Wal.

So having decided to sell the Alembic (so on that basis I had the money in theory right? ) I went to PMT in Cardiff to try a 4003S they had in stock. Looked beautiful on the wall and its still does. As other have commented the neck felt so weird, also close up the control had a sort of cheap look. Sound was great, esp the bridge pickup but after 15 mins of playing I was glad to give it back but sad that a little dream had died.

Ah, but if you look carefully you will see I have something extra on my image !
Ps, what is Gelfin's bass bash ?

8. My next one was a a young lad in Ireland, had relatives in Dublin and would go and stay with my Aunt for a few weeks.

Was sitting on the wall out side my Aunts house in about 1968 in Crumlin just outside Dublin when this tall skinny guy with afro haircut walks past,
In 1968 that was pretty unusual look for Ireland back then, asked my uncle who he was and he said some bloke in a band called Skinny Liz.

Well not far out, was of course Phill Lynott.

9. When i was at collage we started a Yes tribute band. well that was the idea. Unfortunately the pool of available talent was slightly limited so we ended up with two bassists (lead bass and rhythm bass - yes really). Evan at the time it was not great, in fact horrific would be more accurate.
