1.
Buzz or rattle? It can sometimes be difficult of differentiate the two, but buzz indicates electrical fault - could be preamp tube(s), transistors, output transformer or an earthing problem on your bass. This is one of those occasions where thwe easiest way to work out which bit is at fault is to meet up with a mate and swap over kit. Whereabouts are you.
i'm pretty sure its not an earthing issue with the bass as it does it regardless of playing or having the bass plugged in. that's also why i think its buzz. i guess it is possible it's an electrical issue with the head, not had any problems with it thus far but then i got it second hand head so not sure how much action its seen. yes, you're right, the easiest way is to try all different possibilities and work out what's wrong- i'm in leamington spa, west midlands.
 2.
' post='93923' date='Nov 24 2007, 08:22 PM']I had this trouble with one of my speakers, is the rear of the cab open (can u c the back of the speakers) cus if somethings been knocked, theres a wire connecting the speakon terminals to the speaker itself, the wire connected to the speaker with most likely have bare ends. the cables can fray (like hi-fi cables) and touch. This causes short circiting. Now if that was a load of crap and didnt mean anything to u. sorry but hopefuly it did lol
the cab is an ampeg 4x10 (svt 410he) so the back isn't open, but could still be that problem could it?
 3.
is the earthing on the bass ok, as you mention the buzzin ceases when you touch the strings.
i had earthing problems with my old bass so know what that's like and am certain its nothing to do with the bass. it happens even without the bass plugged in if i turn the amp up loud, or if i just touch the other end of the instrument cable without the bass plugged in. it's a pretty consistent buzz, doesn't really change a great deal while playing, moving further from amp etc. It obviously amplifies a bit more when i turn the volume up.
 4.
Would it help if I sent you a Speakon to Jack so you can try all the different combinations? - Amp jack output to new cab Speakon - Amp Speakon output to old cab jack
that would be really useful, thanks Obbm :-) to save you the trouble i may be able to borrow a jack to jack speaker lead from a friend and then at least i can establish whether the amp works with the cab with jack to jack. if it did then it'd obviously be some issue with the speakon input or cable.
 5.
Probably just the new cab letting you hear noise more clearly - patently if there is a fault, it must be with the head or the environment... Have you tried moving the rig to another room/socket? Turn off any fluorescent lights (or worse, dimmers) Check the fridge too
Cheers for the tips Stewart- I've just tried the rig in a couple of different rooms, turning off the fridge, all lights, but still seems to happen. It does seem to be slightly less buzzy when i'm not touching the fret board, but it still doesn't stop completely when i am. there's also a crackly sound when moving up and down the fret board. the buzzing can still be heard when i'm playing at low volumes. i'd used my old cabs with the head in the same places in my flat but didn't get problems, so i'm thinking its more to do with something that's gone wrong with the head, the speaker cable or cab.
 6. I've read the buzzing sticky but didn't really cover this: I've just got a second hand ampeg 4x10 (500 watts) to go with my ampeg V4BH (100 watts all tube) head. When connecting the two I'm getting a constant buzzing sound from it, even with my bass about 10 meters away- the sound is constant irrespective of distance to it. I've tried connecting the bass to the head with different cables and this makes no differencen so i've ruled that out. In fact the buzzing still happens without the bass plugged in if turn the volume right up. And with the bass plugged in, it is a consistent noise regardless of whether i touch the bass or metal (had this earthing kind of problem with different amps in the past and it doesn't seem like that) I've never had problems with the head and i used it only a few days ago with another cab at a gig. I've got the amp set to 8 OHM to match the cab spec. I'm not using any effects. Have tried a couple of different sockets for power but still having the same problem. One thing that may be causing it is that i'm using the speakon input rather than jack for the first time ever with this amp head. The speakon lead is brand new too. i've no other speaker leads (jack or speakon) to try it with right now so can't check if its the lead or something with the spekon input. I'm really not very technical but is it possible there's dust in either the cab or amp speakon input, or that the cable is faulty? Any ideas anyone?

 9. If you're purely talking about looking and being cool then this guy has GOT to be added to the list:
 10. yeah good plan Rod. i'm not planning on doing anything hasty yet. will try the 1x15 alone next time. also, i'm playing another small festival next week & as there's loads of bands on with quick change overs i'll just be using my head on the 4x10 they are providing, so i'll see how that sounds in a gig environment. don't get me wrong though, the 2x10 alone does sound amazing, just not great for volume. if i decide to keep the same setup then i'll deffo look into one of those trolleys, will be well worth it. can be a problem with room in the car when taking 2 cabs though.
 11. just an update on how i'm getting on with the new rig! played a small festival gig couple of weeks back & it sounded ace, really loud & big sound. didn't need to push the volume much at all. then played a gig in fairly small venue (200 capacity) last week but only used the 2x10 cab with the head (due to lack of room in the car) & it was lacking on volume i thought. had the gain and master volumes set to about 7 and 10 respectively. in fairness, it probably wasn't helped by the other band insisting the amp be further across the stage and not by the drums, nearer to where i was to sing, so i wasn't playing that close to it. think i'll generally always need both cabs by the look of it, which is a pain as i have two floors to negotiate at my house, plus a long alleyway before i can get it in the car! the full setup is sounding really amazing though. my indecisive nature is just thinking maybe i'd be better off switching the 1x15 & buying a 4x10 for most gigs and keeping the 2x10 as an add on for bigger gigs and practicing with at home. okay i'd lose out on that extra bottom end from the 1x15 but less lugging around would even things out! any opinions on how much louder a 4x10 would be than a 2x10 (with an ampeg 100 watt all valve head)??
 12. oh been busy, not been on for a while. yeah i tried out the 3 cabs chris had going (cheers chris) & in the end i went for the (ampeg SVT) 15he & SVT 210he as they're both really easy to move & give a good mix of options. not actually gigged with it yet so can't report on how its sounding but the 2x10 alone is sounding really good so looking forward to trying the full rig out at a gig on saturday! really pleased with the ampeg V4BH head, really nice tone. hard to tell about the power playing alone but its sounding pretty capable. cheers for all the advice
 13.
I don't know if this helps your decision, but I've got an HLF -- and a three-wheels-on-each-side trolley from Machine Mart like this It makes the rather bulky cab a one-man job on stairs. That's just as well because we rehearse in a cellar . I tried the HLF side-by-side with a 2x10 and 1x15. I liked the two-cab route slightly better for sound, but not enough to pay more for them new. Cheers Mark
Cheers Misrule, those trolleys sound handy, looks like the just roll up the stairs! thanks for the opinion on the 2x10 + 1x15 sound
IME a 2x10" & 1x15" combo IS one of the BEST spkr combos U can get! 4 small gigs U can just take the 15"-or the 2x10"- I used a 1x15"EV for 13yrs with GREAT results. Then for bigger gigs take 'em both! Sound wise this combo- as stated above- IMHO- sounds better by far than a single 4x10. The 15" gives a WICKED old school thump & 10"s give U punchyness & modern snap( tho a 15" will give plenty of punch, snap too). But this set up IMHO- is Perfect 4 U. 1. would match PERFECTLY with the V4BH( V4BH & SVT15= basically an old B15-as used by J.Jamerson on Motwn recordings) 2. covers a LOT of sound spectrum/versatility of sound. 3. IS extremely portable. 4. when put together the 2 cabs really do become greater than "the sum of their parts"!!!! A single 2x10" is great, a single 1x15" is great, but comining 'em = BLISS!!!!!!! 5. VERSATILITY(again) but U can leave the 15 on the floor-or on a crate- pointing straight out, & angle the 2x10 up 2 yr ears to hear really well!!!! Without having to 'drown out' the others in band. I could go on!!! If I was U & they're a good price & condition- NO QUESTION- I'd grab 'em! -IF U like the sound!!!!!!!!! Good luck. Let me know how U go! Rod.
Cheers again Rod, that does sound like the best option for me, will wait to hear back from Chris about it. deffo sounds good in terms of being more portable/adaptable than just getting one cab too.
 14.
Hi, Are you still looking for a cab?
Yes I'm still on the lookout, just PM-ed you Chris!
BANANAMAN- get the 2x10 & 1x15 AMPEGS CHRIS B. has 4 sale if they're a good price- hard to beat matching this head with these cabs-just with the 15" would be a killer OLD SCHOOL SOUND but the 2x10" would give a modern (& louder) option. IMHO!!!!!!!!
Am I right in thinking that the 2x10 twinned with the 1x15 would give a more varied sound than the 4x10 alone? also how would those two combinations differ in volume? i'm thinking i'd want the 4x10 alone (maybe with 1x15 as well for bigger gigs) OR the 2x10 with the 1x15. The 2x10 & 1x15 would obviously be much more portable but then i want to get the best sound mainly.
 15.
I used my V4BH in my big band-8 piece-soul/funk/etc- sounded GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! No PROBS with volume- opposite actually! HAd plenty- I only used it on about 1/2 vol. so NO dirt added either! Just sounded GREAT!!!!!SAT in the MIX BEAUTIFULLY!
well that certainly confirms they've got some power then if it cut through in an 8 piece!!
 16.
Bananaman- what sorta cabs have U got at the mo'- just want to get a feel 4 what U got & may like!
i haven't got any!! i sold my ashdown 2x10 combo a few weeks back. that's the only amp i've owned so this is my first foray into head & cab setups. i've just been looking at orange 4x10 cabs. the sensitivity on these is one of the highest i've heard so would certainly help with volume. has anyone got an idea of how an ampeg valve head would sound with one of these?? http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/fl...roduct_id/14332
 17. thanks so much for the info, much appreciated. after much researching i've ordered an ampeg head - V4 BH! the orange ones are too far out my reach. thanks for confirming my suspicions about the SVT410HLF Rodl2005. just not that bit too heavy & cumbersome for my circumstances right now as i thought. would be nice to get an ampeg cab to match but am worried about volume now. am thinking the svt410 hle will be a good bet if i can find one second hand. 20 pounds lighter than the HLF & slightly smaller, although this is only 98db sensitivity i think?
 18. Hi, I've recently sold my ashdown 300 watt 2x 10 combo (MAG 210-T-300) & am looking into a cab & head setup. I've been looking at ampegs as i'm pretty sure that sound will suit me best but wanted some advice on the different ampeg stuff & maybe any alternative brands- its difficult to try all the different types of stuff out as most stores only stock half the lines, if that. i'm using a rickenbacker 4003. i play in an upbeat rock 3-piece (influences right from 60's stuff through to present- all the classic 3-pieces especially- nirvana, jam etc), rare use any effects (boss overdrive), just looking to get a really good sound but don't need masses of power or a huge stack, as size & weight is an issue as i live on the 2nd floor & we often pack all our bands gear into one car (assuming we don't need drums). generally playing pubs, small clubs with occasional bigger gigs (small festival this summer). My solid state 300 watt combo was fine for power, and was DI'd at bigger venues anyway. For a head i'm looking at 100 watt ampeg all valve head V 4BH (http://www.ampeg.com/products/classic/v4bh/index.html) I want the valve sound but the 300 watt classic head is too heavy/expensive/way too powerful for my requirements. I'm not technical at all so am unsure how the wattage of sold state vs valve compare- will 100 watts handle small venues in a 3 piece & be fine for being DI'ed at the bigger places. Is the 100 watts going be enough/how would this compare in sound level to the 300 watt solid state combo? For a cab i'm thinking a 4x10 will be about as much in weight and size i can shift around easily/fit in the car whilst providing a great sound- so essentially i want the best sound for a 4x10 alone rather than a 4x10 that will be backed up by a 1x15 etc Was after opinions about which would be better suited to me out of the two classic series ampeg 4x10's- ampeg SVT 410hlf or the svt410 hle . from reviews i've read the view seems to be that the hlf is a better stand alone cab, but it can often be too bassy. Any advice/opinions on this greatly appreciated and if anyone has any ampeg stuff they want to sell PM me! ;-)
