Ah yes - that explains why the Marquess is such a good looker. I'm guessing that HB are actually paying tribute / acknowledging the Marleaux design heritage of their bass by using the same syllabic prefix to the name i.e. Mar-quess vs Mar-leaux? Or am I over thinking this? 😁

I'm thinking the exact same thing, so then there's two of us! 🤣

I watched someone do this with a Lancia Delta Integrale on the telly the other week. My first thought was wondering how long it lasts.

If its done correctly, it can last for to 7-10 years.

But it won't withstand physical abuse better than the original paintwork

  3. I tried to find an alternative, because i seemed to remember

someone else having something equal. But i came up empty.

When i'm extra careful, i put tape where i plan to cut, wrap over it and cut against that,

    and then remove the tape.

But it's a bit tricky to remove the tape.

I’ve just bought an old bc rich from eBay in a “well reliced” condition.
I’m currently trying to restore the body shape with wood filler, but once that is done, I’m thinking about doing a cover similar to the joker one above, but using a poster like an old movie poster.
can someone help me out on the process pls? Or point me towards someone that would be able to do it for me?
    cheers

If you do a search for signmakers / car wrapping in your area, they should be able to help you.

Either if you want to only buy the material or let them do the complete job.

The hard part is usually to get hold of a good enough original.

I had thought about a contrast stripe. What a great idea, though, to start with the butt joint and then cover it if needed.

I'm waiting on 4 testers of colour swatches now to arrive, so I can figure out which one to use. I'm going to wrap an old Fender HM Bass I picked up in a 3M colour - choice of carbon fibre, gloss deep blue metallic, gloss flip psychedelic, or gloss charcoal metallic. Carbon fibre might be too much of a challenge, but I want to see what it looks like anyway.

I really like 3M charcoal and psychedelic flip.

We did a Tesla at work in matte Psychedelic Flip. And it looked great!

Ah, you are a star, thanks for that. That’s about where I planned to try the butt joint. However the belly contour on the upper part of the bass is a challenge. I might opt for the overlap after all.

I use a scalpell and a very light touch when I cut the vinyl, but knifeless is a very good way to cut with absolutey no risk of damaging the bass.

You could start with a buttjoint, and if the vinyl starts to shrink or unravel, you can put a stripe of vinyl along the joint.

A stripe in a constrasting colour can make a nice touch.

Where did the overlap land on the back? Beyond the line of the belly contour, or even further in than that?

I try to make it as much as possible along the "ridge" of the instrument.
(I'm swedish and can't think of a better way to describe it in english, so i made a drawing 😊)

That's also the easiest place to do it.

Is it possible to do a non-overlapping seam along the side, using e.g. 3M knifeless tape? Or does there always have to be an overlap to prevent peeling at the edges if there is a seam at the side? I've seen some impressive butt joints using vinyl but wasn't sure if the butt joint then had to be covered over.

    It's possible...

But the risk of the vinyl shrinking (it can shrink 0,5 - 1 mm), or you peeling it with your arm, are pretty big.

So its a question of taste and priorities. I do the back first and then the front with about 5 mm overlap, so its invisible

when you look at the bass from the front.

Lovely! So if the first one you bought was the wrong colour... which one is the right colour?

The one with black pick-ups and bridge on the right hand side was the first i bought of these six. It is red-ish, like the top left, under the vinyl i put on it. The ones above and under are the "right" color: natural wood with white/beige plastic.

  10. My pride and joy:

Six Vantage VP710B'S that i collected over the years. It all started in the early 80's with buying my first, which got stolen in 91. Then i had to buy a new, but ut was in bad shape and wrong color. So i kept buying better and better basses as i found them.

Now i have enough to last the rest of my life! 😀

  11. I have 16 basses, including a DB, but always go back to my first love:
    Vantage VP710B.
    I have 6 of those :)
I have two tuned BEAD, one with flats and the rest are EADG. They are spread over two rehearsealspaces and my home.

  12. I work as a signmaker, with vinyl since over 30 years, and have wrapped 12 - 14 basses and guitars.

I must say that for being your first try, you did an amazing job! And it seems like you learned enough this time to make it perfect next time.

The only way to wrap both sides is to wrap the back first and then the front with 1 - 1 1/2 centimeter of overlapping along the edge of the instrument.

Amazing collection! Those 3-point units used by Matsumoku are notoriously flexible though - this was my Westbury Track 2 when I got it:

Think it might've been too far gone for the bar to fix it...

    Thank you 😀

That's what happened to all my bridges.

I bought 5 no-name replacements from Alibaba for almost the same price as one costs in Sweden. And they work just as well.
