Something a little more exotic than black would be fun if you’re vinyl wrapping. Gold or a more psychedelic pattern would cool!
In my bass collection a black bass IS exotic 😀
A friend has a guitar with that look, and I think it will look cool on the Explorer.

Excellent.
If the grain is a good as the body in the photo, just stain the front face instead and paint the back & sides. Or stain it all over.
I will stay with what I know 😀
And if i'm not satisfied with the color i just rip it of and try something else.

I ordered a kit from guitarkitfabric.co.uk.
An Explorer style bass just because I like the looks of it.
I work with vinyl and know nothing of paint, so I will wrap it.
Sides and back in matte black and front in "black wood"
For the price i'm not expecting much, but for the fun of assembling it, as a toy and a decoration it's worrh it to me.

I was going to say, I'd choose option 1, but then you did! Great experiment.
Thanks. 😀
It was a lot of fun to finally do it.

Just to re cap on pfretrock's wiring diagrams - how have you wired these two pairs of pups ? could you draw this out for us (me) just want to check back over what i did on my five string pictured above. My pups do have reversed poles on each pair, so a north and a south on each set, but as i later changed from vol, tone vol, tone to installing a pup balance pot So this is now Vol, balance and tone, tone. Could someone just reasure me to how this should be wired and i'll go check and draw mine out.
I just wondered but i guess if wrong it would either be a dead short or hum. I was thinking of changing this back to my original pot layout but I always find i prefer any bass with two pups to have them both on full anyway 😄 the two controls interacted and each tone also affects output of the overall sound.
Cheers
I can't help you, sorry.
BBQV did all the routing and soldering. And he soldered everything back as it was from the beginning. And when I shifted the pickup-positions i just moved them sideways with the leads still attached.
So its basically the same design as in a Les Paul.

I really appreciate the opinions I get here. 😀
I've been playing VP-710B since the early 80's and i'm a bit stuck in my ways.
So I was concerned that was too biased.
But I feel that it was the right thing to do, even though my other five will stay original.

Wow - thanks! Really striking how much difference there is between the configurations. I'll be back - with notes!
Right away the difference between the two neck positions is huge - I'm assuming they were all recorded at the same volume?
You assume right 🙂
And i was careful to keep the height of the pickups the same in all positions.
I played every take with the same attack (as best i could).

I had one of my Vantages routed to enable reverse P.
@BBQV did all the hard work, I only played and recorded it.
So now i tried all the combinations in that one bass.
Bass directly into Audacity.
Changed the position of the pickups without even loosening the strings,
so everything else is exactly identical.
I haven't decided which i think is best, but i am going to leave it Reverse!
It's friday evening, so i did it quick and dirty...Reverse Neck.mp3 Reverse Bridge.mp3 Reverse Both.mp3 Original Bridge.mp3 Original Both.mp3 Original Neck.mp3 Bridge Reverse - Neck Original.mp3

Awesome! Looks HEAVY (in concept I mean not weight). Will you be exhaustively documenting your findings with high quality audio?! Pretty please? 🤞
I managed some quick and dirty recordings in an old laptop with audacity.
I shifted the pickups without even loosening the strings, so everything else is identical.

Got the bass back yesterday and compared it with an original.
Only a fast comparison through an Amplug Bass. But there was a difference, more well defined somehow.
But that can be differences in strings, serup and such, so i'm going to find a way to record so I can compare the different placements in the same bass.

Unfortunately my computer burned, so I have no recording possibility. 😢
It will only be my subjective opinion.

Yes, Leo had the magnets different in both sides. Presumabnly this is a requirement for the humbucking effect (or he thought it was).
Seems that I might have to do some trial and error...🤔

I went through teh same kind of existential crisi 🙂
Therefore, My Stradi bass has a special feature.
It has two Delano "The eXtend" pickups those are quad coils.
Mine are specifically wired in order to have P/QuadCoils/Reverse P so I can choose. Each pickup also has its own preamp.
Turns out the difference is quite subtle, but really useful when playing with the EQ.
I'm pretty sure the most difference comes from the pickup placement
Those sound like my ideal pickups! 👍

I like it! With those big routs you suddenly have a lot more options than just split-coils too. You can fit J pickups, many types of humbuckers or any combination of those.
I could...
But i'm a Double P kind of person 😄 -

for me, that is why I would choose option 2 - I don't tend to use the bridge pup solo'd
I play with either both pickups or neck solo'd.
Always with the controls on 10.
I'm eager to see if the reverse P is useful on the bridge pickup.

There is a video on YouTube, which goes through the options of placing p pups in both configurations.
for me- based on the video- I’d go option 2 ( standard at the front, reverse at the bridge)The way i do it, I can test all three options in the same bass.
It hurts a bit to "sacrifice" a bass.
But i have spares
It won't be empirical evidence for the one and only truth, but it will finally end my curiosity! 😄

You do have other 'options' though, I'm sure mathematically I could tell you how many... if I put my mind to it!
e.g. #3 Neck pup E+A closer to bridge / Bridge pup E+A away from the bridge.
The sky is the limit 😀
I'll see if they fit at an angle a la Dingwall.

Cool - my gut feeling is option 1, but there is something very pleasing visually about option 2, but it's got to be about the sound right? My next build will be a double P in 1 of those two configuations so i look forward egarly to your findings. Just moving the pickups a cm or so really changes the tone, let alone reversing them!
What will the controls be? I was thinking the ultimate would be 60's jazz bass style with stacked volume and tone for each pickup, but you already have 3 post and a switch there...
I think the same way. Probably #1, but #2 somehow looks better...
The controls are V/T for each pickup, but the shaft for the bridge pickup Tone is broken, so I am probably just leave inside the cavity and wrap over the hole.

I'm about to solve the mystery of Double P/Reverse P or a combination thereof.
(At least for myself)
I had a friend put a router in one of my six Vantages.
Now I can place them in all three variations and see for myself if I hear a difference and if so, which I like the best.
When i've decided, my plan is to fill in the empty spaces and wrap the bass in printed vinyl to cover up the mess.- 3

You are not wrong.
In my opinion the 80s was the best era for basses. And music.
