  1. Thanks

Fortunately, i live near the soundslive shop in newcastle and they have been very helpful, recomending ashdown and hartke. I have seen the Marshall MB 4x10 combo and I have been told good things about it and to ingore outdated opinions on marshall bass amplification. I am going to be trying out a 1x15 ashdown evo II and the marshall 4x10. i just have to decide which will be right for me.

The ashdown provides a wopping 300watt and for the money, carn't find a better 1x15. Although it's a 15, so i expecting whilst gigging, that my higher note swill be drowned out by the guitar. Which is where the 10's would come in handy.

    we shall have to see

  2. My Carlsbro combo is almost dead and no longer suitable for requirements. So I need new amplification.

I have recently bought a spector legend 6 string and I was wondering if 6 strings would prefer a particular setup, given their tonal range?

I need the setup for gigging, something with wheels, and something big 4x10. I hear good things about hartke, but they seem rather cheap, what do people think?

My budget is around 400 quid.

    Cheers

  3. all very interesting opinions. thanks. I am looking into passive pups, I keep hearing they are they way to go.

Interesting points from gilmour, I have no trouble with sustain at the moment and that's with the regular 4 strings at drop G. Bare in mind that the music we are creating is doom and very sludgy doom for that matter. Clarity and punch is far from what I am after :)

I am noticing only minor rapping of the frets and certainly not on the pups.

Bah, this is far too complicated.

we could just tune to c# and stop making things difficult.

  4. Hello everybody peeps

    Need some advice on pickups.

I have a four string dearmond jet star. It’s a decent bass and I don’t really see the need to replace it. But I need a different sound from it.

I am in a doom band and as some of you may know, it generally requires a heafty bass sound.

We have detuned our strings to ‘drop G’ and I want my setup to match this.

Currently my strings are ‘normal’ for a four string, but I am going to buy a set (heavy gauge, given the rattle) for a five string and use them in what I assume to be an obvious combination.

The dearmond has two single coil pickups and they just aren’t given the sound I want. I have looked emg’s and their MMCS’s and MMTW’s seem to be the way forward for “thunderous” bass. The tw, giving the option of switching between single and double coil, this maybe the more versatile option.

I intend to replace only one (at the bridge).

Is there a better pickup out there for the job? Or a better setup? Maybe I should just buy a new bass? God knows how much fitting would cost, should I bottle and decide to get somebody to do it.

    Your thoughts please?

  5. Hi my name is Jay, i live in Newcastle.

I have been playing guitar for 17 years now and bass for 11. Strings generally for the last 20 years.

I am classically trained in guitar and played professionally for some years. I have no formal tutoring in electric guitar/bass as such, I am ropy when it comes to technique and any term that isn’t in Italian, I most likely will have trouble with.

Anyhow, I have recently co created a band (which will be my third) with a mate. We are intending to play the most thunderous and awesome ‘Doom’ and so far its sounding excellent (very Celtic Frost).

He is very accomplished and is a member of various projects, most of which are signed. He does all of the production work himself and his skills are amazing.

As you can imagine, I am feeling a little out of my dept and I have joined here to get to grips with bass speak and see what the craic is.

I currently have a Dearmond Jet star which is far too jazzy for doom and as such I am off to find the thread about pickups…..
