I live in Dorset. Try Robin Greenwood, he does good repair work and I have an instrument made by him which is great quality. He's based near Poole - Courtyard Craft Centre, Lychett Minster. Otherwise the guys at Absolute Music are good too but more expensive.
Yeah absolute have already quoted me 150-200!!! thanks for the heads up i"ll give him an a email cheers -
While that's a good idea to confirm if it was made with fretlines or not, you can rest assured that it is 100% definitely Ebony, I work with it every week . As I mentioned earlier, it would not be an expensive job to have a local luthier restore the board.
Thats good to know cheers, can you give me a ballpark figure so I won't be ripped off!!
how's that new? If it's been sat in a shop for the last 25 years then you would expect some ageing of the wood.
i didn't say in was new i said it was 'new' ... yeah of course I expect some damage my issue is I was sold it meant to be in great condition. They said they had cleaned it but hand't the neck was filthy with gunk and hiding all these issues Gonna take it a luthier or to and find out the true state of it, maybe its not as bad as I think, maybe its worse!! I just feel ripped off £1500 is a lot of money for what looks like pretty damaged board, I don;t think its worth what I paid for it, Do you want it? -
If you bought it from a shop, send it back or exchange it. If you bought it from a dude on the Internet, then caveat emptor! Get it re-planed and use flat wounds on it.
The shop said ' Hi - what you see are normal and part of the process of wooden moving over time. The more the play the bass the better as the moisture from your hands will change the way the wood expands and contracts. will they give me a refund? -

I wouldn't say it was unplayable but thats not the point is it, I spent 1500 big ones on it and should expect a certain quality for that price, and its clearly not in 'excellent' condition, and needs a lot of work to the neck or a new one -
It looks to me as if it's been defretted and filler put into the gaps. Has it got side dots and are they between the fret positions or at the fret positions? If there are dots between the fret positions then it originally had frets. It's ok to have open pores in the surface of a fretboard/fingerboard and light wear from strings isn't a disaster.
side dots are exactly where lines are, so I think its always been a fretless, but do wonder as Wareock dont do lined fretless's as a rule. ITs full of holes, dents, nicks, etc It was sold as in 'excellent ' condition, when it clearly isnt, It needs whole neck planing down, or replaceing...... so I've been overcharged or ripped off condition wise I feel.... It doesn;t sound like a £3000 (new price) bass should -

It sounds quite dead in places, and sticks, when you play it, all my other fretless'es you can slide around no problem.... its a very worn neck... I would keep it if I had got if as a damaged bass for repair, get a new neck for it maybe but its just full of holes like wood worm or smoething, small holes but they are there..... I think the active pick ups mask the sound.... don't know not had a Warwick fretless, photos don't really sow how damaged it really looks, and very dried out, neck hasn't been looked after at all.... -
After having cleaned the fretboard yesterday I discovered a lot of damage, basically fretboard is full of holes, there are chunks out of it and many cracks along where fretlines are Should I get: a new fretboard? or a refund? It cost an arm and a leg and not in the 'excellent condition' I was led to believe, not sure on purpose just neck was so dirty you couldn't tell it was screwed photos below sad face Z
Well, I was SANDING the neck, so I started at 400 grit! What I would do is clean the fretboard with the soapy mix, then straight into the 9u (if you can find it!). Then wipe off the dust and apply the oil. lemon oil is mineral oil, which is basically a petroleum oil. You could use linseed if you want to keep it neutral, but dunlop 65 lemon oil - or whatever it is - is basically mineral oil with fragrance added. Mineral oil is neutral. Don't use olive oil because it can go rancid. It's not a lot of work - maybe 20-30 mins all together. Don't fear the fretboard. It's very resilient. This 9u sandpaper doesn;t seem to exist unless its for cleaning fibre optics, where dod you get it from!? Thanks for all the advice, one I have some fine sandpaper i'll be on itm oe is fine wire wool ok? Chees
-
No way - unless you want a thin lacquer, rather than a wood treatment. Tung oil is a resin, whereas lemon oil (aka mineral oil with scented ingredients.. LOL... no lemons involved whatsoever) is a penetrating oil and keeps the wood soft. Tung oil is like to be sticky and/or gummy over time. You do not want a coating on that ebony in my opinion, just healthy ebony, especially if you want to move around fast. I've just finished my ebony board and went down to 9u (micron) sandpaper (much finer than steel wool!). Just clean gunk with some mild soapy water and an old t-shirt, then let dry and coat with mineral oil, then remove excess after 20 mins. If the wood is 'thirsty' you might need another coat. You would only want to do this once a year or a little more if its a warm dry climate near the bass...
This sounds very sensible. don't really want to alter the neck too much , just 'restore; it to how it would have been 25 years ago!! Did you just use this 9u sandpaper right of or did you use anything else first? is lemon oil a product or a pure kind of oil? cheers z
