love it, and I’ve had it, but prices can just be criminal and for that money I’d rather buy a pedal 😅 but yes, top game purchase if you want a top game PSU.

I’ve got a Harley Benton and it’s working great though.

The price is slightly high.  Apart from the reputation and quality, the main reason I bought it, was because it was about the only unit with 6 outputs and fitted underneath a Metro board.   It’ll probably do me for life now (hopefully).

Already went for the Harley Benton Pro unit and it’s superb

Sorry , yes you did, should’ve read further down the chain.
The Harley Benton pro looks a solid piece of kit as well.   Good choice

  3. I love Sandberg basses, love Rammstein, my favourite colour is black, so I had to get the Oli Riedel signature.   I don’t have any opinions either way, and don’t own any other signature gear, but I do love this bass.

Current bi amp rig for Rock/metal covers band... Laney takes care of the lows in a big way...rest runs fun stuff. Spark is a new addition simply to boost level for my P bass as its output is way lower than my Jazz and Dingwall. Would like to swap out Demon FX pedals for DG originals but simply don't have the cash...and from my research pretty much sound identical...maybe one day. Apollo 2 phaser is a staggering pedal on guitar or bass.  Totally nails that Lizzy Alibi tone.... Chorus lands well for Sweet child of mine... B7k clone is set with low drive and really gets me the Harris clack along with p bass and flats. Octave used conservatively on Land of confusion ( disturbed) and lay down your love (Whitesnake) really thickens sound. Sheehan pedal ( my fav) for all the Mr Big/ winery dogs stuff...  I am trialling the Joyo battery power supply with this. No issues with charge times..it runs this lot for 4 hours plus... But to reduce anxiety levels at gigs I charge it in the gap between sets... No cables ..no ground loops... No earthing issues..  and cheap...and if you don't like it use it as a battery charger for your phone..it has usb out!  I ditched my George Ls to try Harley Benton solderless patch cables ..unbelievable value and am running 3 boards without a single issue ..the sockets are super compact as well. Have recommended to loads of people without issue...

That’s a good run through of how you use your pedals.  Gives it some context rather than looking at a picture of effects pedals.

  5. I’ve still got the old Cube 30 as a practice / quiet rehearsal amp.  If it was to pop its clogs I’d happily go for the new Micro Cube AND a Kantana 110.  Roland / boss gear in this range has advanced so much it’s understandable that some of these old favourites end up discontinued

  6. I have a 30 year old Musicman Stingray 5, and my son has a SUB 5 .    After playing both extensively, it’s obvious the real Stingray is better, but it’s definitely not 4-5 times better as the price suggests.  Can’t fault the SUB 5 , and it is just unbelievably good for the price.
After playing lots of Stingrays over the years, if I had to sum the SUB 5 up, Ernie Ball have found the sweet spot where diminishing returns kick in.

Buy with confidence.  It’s a steal.

  7. Does anyone have experience of the Rheingold BP-2 preamps?  I doubt if I’d get to try one, but all the clips seem to show it just making everything sound better.  A bit like a cheaper Noble.

For all the chat about the MM pup it’s important to realise it will not sound anything like a Ray when solo’d because it’s not designed to.

It’s not in the Ray position nor is it voiced or does it have the Ray Pre-amp.

Its main purpose is to be n adjunct to the P pick up and allow you to cut through and provide clarity.

That’s what it is designed for

Thanks for clarifying, good to know.  That’s sort of how I use it.  Dial the MM-PUP on full, and slowly turn towards the P-PUP until I get a sweet spot.  Really depends on the room.  I had sort of figured the P-PUP is nothing like a P-bass, and the MM-PUP is nothing like a Ray, but the VM4/5s have their own sound with added flexibility.

    I have a VM4 & MarloweDK.

As mentioned the VM4 works well in covers bands but i've also found the humbucker lacked a bit of bite. It's never really sounded much more than a standard J pick up. Its playability is what sells it for me. I use it in a 70's Glam covers band where it works very well.

Oddly enough the MarloweDK didn't work too well in the Glam band and couldn't quite cut thru as well as the VM4.

On the other hand the Marlowe works far better in my 70's punk covers band and cuts thru really well. It does sound similar to my Geddy J but with a little more depth of tone.

Not sure any of that helped with the VM4 versus VT4 issue.

I found your take on the VM4 pick ups interesting.  I have a VM4 and the MM pick-up definitely isn’t the same as my Stingray (I have the Black Label PUPs).

I tend to dial the MM PUP on full, and then slowly turn towards the P-bass PUP until I find a sweet spot, or just leave it on the MM PUP.  The P-bass PUP full on is too much thumpy bass for me, but I bet that would suit a lot of people.
I really liked the VM4 when I first played it, but it’s one of those basses that I’ve grown to like the longer I’ve owned it.

How do you find the 1spot I'm thinking about one for my board?

I have that same Truetone 1spot (CS6) on my board, and it’s perfect size for Nano or Metro Pedaltrain boards.  I’m not averse to daisy chaining power, but you get isolated power supplies.  If anything this provides a real tidy solution.

I’ve just bought a secondhand LMB-3 to put together an old style Boss BCB-30 board. TU-2, LMB-3 and SYB-5.

This is only my second compressor ever. I’m using a vintage P bass through a Mark Bass LM3 and a Barefaced One10 at the moment. I have a TE Elf head on the way though. It’s a low volume contemporary jazz band I’m doing.

For those that have experience of the LMB-3, can you give me some pointers on where to start with it? I just want it to even out my inconsistencies, give me a little punch (but not top end), but still allow a bit of dynamic in my playing when I need it.

    Cheers,

    Rob

PS. The SYB-5 is just for one tune at the moment, Chameleon by Herbie Hancock. I’m right in thinking this should be last in the chain aren’t I?

    Try these:

    Enhance - 9 o’clock

    Ratio - 9 o’clock

    Threshold - 3 o’clock

i believe the enhance circuit scoops the tone as well as adding hiss, so I always had that turned down.  Ended up swapping the LMB-3 for a Hyper Luminal
