1. When I was in the same position - fairly new to bass, and thinking about a pedal - I bought a Boss ODB-3 Overdrive pedal. It was fairly cheap on ebay - they come up on there for £10-20 - and so didn't break the bank at all, for something which I might not use all the time.

  2.
I have yet to find a recent Squier Jazz that sounds like a Fender Jazz and I have just sold one I had for 2 years with a J-Retro East pre-amp on it and a good bridge. It wasn't a bad bass but it wasn't a Jazz.
What are the differences in sound between a Squier Jazz and a Fender Jazz? I would have assumed that they'd sound similar, or the Squier would be made to try and emulate the Fender.

Does this apply to all Squier Jazz models, or just the less expensive ones?

  3.
I think the new Squires are great however I dislike the feel of the necks. What necks I do like are the new Vintage Advance AV4 basses and AV4+1. Great looking and has some tricks over the fenders like better acces to the top frets, definetly thinking about getting one.

Hopefully they've improved the build quality...I tried a couple of the Vintage basses a few years ago and it felt like bits were going to start falling off.

  4. I'd never heard of these before today...is apparently a late 80s Japanese made Squier bass - features a mix of the p-bass body and pickups, but with a tele neck.

Does anyone have any experience with them?

If I can find one cheap, I'm thinking even it doesn't play too well I can use the neck for a future Matt Sharp-style bass.

That'll be an Epiphone ET-280, from around 1974, made in Japan by Aria or Matsumoku. This one has not been improved by the partial removal of its finish.

    Payment in used Rickenbackers, please.

Yeah I couldn't work out if it had been part stripped, or if it was supposed to have a two-tone scheme.

    ..used Rickenbacker in the post.

  6. Hi, Dave here.

I figure I'm at the post-beginner to intermediate level. Been playing mainly rock stuff on-and-off since I left school....and currently in one of the "on" phases.

    My kit includes

    - a (less than inspiring) Squier Standard P-bass
    - a (what I would consider decent) 20w Orange practice amp
    - Boss overdrive pedal

I'm hoping to buy some new kit soon - looking at a range of different instruments - and this forum appears to be a good place for info.
