This looks really nice and, initially, had my Buy-New-Bass senses tingling.

But how different is it to Squier's P-bass Special? (a bass that I'm not a big fan of). Looks like kinda the same hardware in a bit different shaped body.

Fancying a change, I bought a set of Swing Bass 66 strings and can't really say I'm that impressed by them. They just don't seem to have much life in them.

Probably go back to Ernie Ball's after they die.

Have still yet to find a stockist of scratchplates that fit Squier VM Jazz.

Was looking for more info on these and found only this thread. What do people think these will play like?

They do look rather nice, but I'm assuming it might be built poorly.

A simple effect pedal which takes my playing and outputs that of John Entwistle.

I was told the quality of the the OLP basses depended on age. The early ones were fine, then the production quality dropped halfway through, then got way better before the OLP brand was dropped.

Musicman did say they were going to re-try the idea once they found a new company to make them that could gaurantee consistancy.

Personally I had one of the maple MM2 basses and never had problems with it (kinda regretted selling it too).

I bought a scratchplate for my Squier VMJ and two problems were - wouldn't fit without reshaping and screw-holes completely in the wrong place.

Does anyone know where to get a one that might fit? The reshaping is fixable, but the screwhole problem isn't quite.

Big Muff arrived today. Had a quick play around and it sounds really good.

Their second player, Mikey Welsh, used Gibson Grabber/Ripper.

The current player, Scott Shriner, uses 60s Precisions.

I am now bass-less, having sold my old and somewhat unsatisfying Squier PJ. I'm looking to get a new bass, something that emulates that Weezer bass sound from their Blue album and Pinkerton.

I know Matt Sharp used a gutted Fender Jazz body, modified with a Warmouth neck and custom pickups. (This is isn't route I want to go at the moment!)

I've read from various sources that the following, used with a fuzz pedal, might tend toward a similar sound:

- Epiphone EB-0
- Thunderbird (although I'm concerned by their weight)
- Stingray (Sharp used one towards the end of his time in the band, but a Musicman is out of my price range and the OLP range seem to have dried up)
- A Jazz bass
- Squier VM Tele bass

Any input you guys have on what those would sound like, and if they'd get someone near to what I'm after, would be greatly appreciated.

Obviously I'll be making some music shop visits to try some, but not being too knowledgeable I'd like to go prepared!

Are you guys talking about the standard Squier Jazz bass here, or one of the vintage modified?

It was a great help to me starting out and no other magazine since has filled the gap.

There used to be a great magazine called "Bassist" which covered any level bass player and was actually an interesting read. Then, supposedly due to lack of readership, it got merged into "Guitarist" magazine - and by merged I mean bass guitar got three pages per month...

I did try Bass Guitar Magazine for a time, but it just got dull a dishwater and often seemed to forget that not everyone is a)a genius player or b)has the money to afford high-end kit all the time.

The US mags are okay, but the newsagents in my locality don't seem to get them too regularly.

Well that's good. It does seem like they genuinely wanted to offer something in that lower quartile price range, without it being low on quality.

As it says in that forum link above, not everyone can justify or afford the high-end premium but still aspire to having a Stingray.

It's an Avon Morris Rose Jazz bass - not in great condition, but I'm looking to make lots of modifications to it anyway.

Do they have plans to start another lower cost range to replace the OLPs? (or to change to a different manufacturer?)

So...Avon basses - are they really Jap "crap" and a waste of money?

I'm looking at this at the moment for a build project and, as long it stays fairly cheap, I'm might bid.
