1. In my previous life as a sound-level meter carrying professional, I have sympathy with you and the venue.
It looks like the new owner is manipulating 100 year old case-law to make more money from his investment.

Rushing around with a sound level meter and making a big hullabaloo looks like deliberate scare tactics,
and any sound level reading he has taken will not be repeatable in court. Only the judgement of an independent professional from the Local Authority would carry any weight. There's a lot more to "Noise Nuisance" than a simple uncalibrated sound-level reading from an untrained whinger.

Presumably the building is an obvious music venue with advert boards or posters outside that are
clearly visible to the general public and has a Public Entertainment Licence.

The venue owners need to stand firm and not be intimidated. The venue owners/manager could consider
contacting the local authority and enquire if they have received any complaints.

2. Hello hrnn1234,

I've just checked this speaker out on winISD and it comes as no surprise that it is totally unsuitable for bass guitar use. It's a Bass-Mid P.A unit and only handles the nominal power down to about 200Hz !!

xMax is feeble at 1.29mm. Below approx 200Hz, xMax was exceeded with a 50watt input!

Others may may come along later to give you advice on similarly priced alternatives that are suitable for a closed box.

3. Hi lagartortazo,

Having checked out all the choices on your list with winISD, I can't find any that produce a good response in
39litres (half the cabinet net volume). As Phil Starr has said, the Beyma 212 works well enough to be usable.
Without touching the existing second port it will have a tuning frequency of about 51Hz.

However, it will change the sound balance of the system because it probably has more low bass than the original GK unit but is probably less efficient (a fraction less loud) overall.

See winISD graph of the Beyma in 39litres of air space. Double click on the attached thumbnail picture.

Over here the Beyma is about €100. You'll have to wait for the reply e-mail to learn the cost of a GK original. Good luck.

PS. Don't forget to check that the speaker mounting holes of any replacement are the same diameter as the GK originals.

Around 125 litres, and port measurements are 12x24cm
Thank you

Using your dimensions, I get a nominal internal volume of about 83 litres. Looking at the GK site for the MBE(ii) the internal dimensions appear to be about 115 litres. In both cases there needs to be an adjustment for the volume occupied by the speakers, bracing, port(one or two) and the drive units. Can you confirm that the dimensions you quoted are internal.

5. Maybe the screws/bolts/T-nuts holding the drivers to the front baffle are less then secure. Make sure they're all tight. Don't tighten them excessively, just evenly and firmly. Also tie up & secure any sagging wires. Have you filled in the old tweeter aperture?

6. I think I can see an additional function here for my cheapo but worthy Behringer BEQ-700 graphic equalizer (A Boss GEB-7 clone) . I bought it last Christmas for the fun of it and hovered back & forth for days between it and the Caline CP-24 (a clone of MXR 108 10 band equaliser). In the current discussion I would have been better off buying the Caline (circa £30), but since I only play in "the den" I saved about £12.

The Behringer and the Boss have a cut & boost slider centred on 50Hz. With full cut, that will take out some of the electronic low level nasties between 40-60Hz and will probably make for a crisper sound without sounding tonally much different. The MXR and the Caline have 31.25Hz (that 0.25 of Hz is so important) slider, so at full-cut will possibly remove 10-12 dB of electronic & acoustic rumble between 20 & 40Hz. That's much more effective and a possible speaker saver. It would also seem to make sense if the equaliser were first in the pedal or rack-mount chain. Clean-in, clean out.

That's all good but there may be more. After searching on "Microthumpinator" and "Fdeck" I read (in the other place) an interesting observation from a Mike Arnopol -

"Put in the HPF (High Pass Filter) and dialed it up at the highest setting. The clack was gone. As I expected, but so was the low bass. Kept dialing it down. I wasn't a whole lot past the lowest setting when I didn't really notice the missing bass. But no more voice coil smack. The interesting thing---the C8 actually got LOUDER. I think it was because I was no longer using my amp's recources amplifying crap I didn't want to amplify anyways. The C8 as well as the 88 go substantially louder with the HPF. Substantially louder."

PS. Search for "Behringer" directs you to "music-group.com", but click on the links & Norton Security pops up with a warning of an unsafe site!! The detail indicates there's a Trojan in the "downloads" section?!

7. He should have remembered the old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

This is from nearly 7 years ago - Lakers v Rocket, game 5 play-off.
It's just over 2 minutes - more straight ahead all round. When you get to about 1 minute, turn up the volume and enjoy classic bass tones.

Also try searches on JBL K140 - they're prized treasures for some people.

You may also see modern comparisons on the usspeaker.com web-site.

10. Hello stevebasshead,

I've had a look at a few 10" options and there is no shortage of speakers to fit in as a 4x10. Some are pretty weak and others look really great with lots of power handling. Also don't be surprised by a difference in tonal balance.

However, as jtuk says , you have to look at the cost. Four new speakers (in general) can cost from £200 to over £325.

By the way, what speaker is fitted in the box at the moment?

Balcro.

11. Hi stevebasshead,

Once you've fitted the new empty front baffle and secured it against battens or whatever, what (height x width) dimensions remain? Can you still fit two 10" speakers side by side and still leave room for some wood between them?

If that's possible, then divide the internal volume by 2 or 4. That gives you the possibilities for volume per drive unit. Some, not all, loudspeaker manufacturers publish data showing a suitable volume for their speaker drive units on the product page. Check their web-sites. For others you'll have take the t/s parameters and run them through winISD to see if the volume is appropriate.

Also:-
1. What are you trying to achieve?
2. What is the existing internal volume?
3. Why change from a 15" drive unit?

It feels quite light without the speakers, my basson cab weighs more.
The drivers are light so it should be too bad, plus my entire band will be helping to shift the thing about.

Bootsy,

I'm with Billfitzmaurice on this one. Wild idea, but when I modelled it in winISD the response curve was unbalanced in the low/mid bass with nearly 4dB lift at 95Hz compared with the level at 230Hz. Despite all the iron employed, low-bass-power- handling was only in the region of 300watts. It looked much more comfortable when set in a closed box of 450 litres!! Only a 1.8dB lift at 125Hz - that would sound very punchy.

The good news is the sound level with 300watts input. How about 139dB between 140 & 160HZ!!!!

Not quite a Saturn V moon rocket, but keep trying.

I suspect the TF1525 is a Bass PA speaker, not really for electric bass.
