Maybe we need to debate what constitutes a debate
The 4 versus 5 string is a perfectly legitimate debate/discussion that will understandably come around every year or two, with contributions from newer members that bring their own views and experiences.
As I said in an earlier post, I'd never given fanned fret basses any thought, but thanks to this thread and Iain's mention of the extra (37") scale length of the B string, it's got me thinking that maybe I should check one out.

You should definitely check out fanned frets, it gives that B string a whole new feel.

I don't get it. What can you do on a 4 string that you can't on a 5?

Agreed, I'm confused. I see a five as having all the benefits of a four but with some advantages. I look forward to hearing the benefits of not having the fifth string.

  3. For me, the biggest benefit of the 5 over the 4 is playability when gigging. I find it easier to play across the guitar in the same hand position rather than having to play up and down the guitar to get the same range of notes. Only rarely do I play stuff needing to go below the E so the bottom end is not the real benefit for me. Since moving to my first 5 a few years ago I've never looked back. They look cooler than 4s too 😜

  4. Down, down, up is my preference. Great tune to practise with, that GOF number. Some early Duran Duran is useful too, particularly Planet Earth and Hold Back The Rain. JT used to say that he used a pick for these tracks cos he found it difficult with fingers. Personally, I find it easier with fingers.
