1. I was looking in to that - but I may have to pay a restocking fee, and I might have just missed the boat on the final return date.

You know, if I could afford to, I would keep the instrument purely as an example of an iconic design, a conversation piece, an objet d'art!

But I have to pump the cash back into the old credit card I'm afraid.

All bands have to start somewhere.
A similar argument persists with e.g. aviation and the publishing world (both of which I have had experience of), in which the common whine is that new entrants are making it a 'race to the bottom' by undervaluing themselves.

If you have a problem with others valuing themselves for less than yourself, you need to ensure you are properly differentiated to get the required attention. If these pubs want to pay peanuts they will get monkeys (as it were.)

You can't directly attribute falling pub numbers to rubbish bands. There's a lot more to do with social drinking culture, the spread of cheap supermarket booze and a million channels of drivel to watch on TV to stop people having a good reason to go to the pub.

I'd go to the bar if it was live music - even if it was rubbish.

Just to have a few beers and hear players do their thing is good enough.

They get practice, exposure and experience - we get life, effort and passion ...... even if the skills and talent aren't there.

  4. Yep - I know the picture.

I've got 2 kids myself and a 2 - 2.5 hour commute each day, but I find that having my gear set up and ready to play at all times means I can have a 10 - 20 minute noodle when the time allows, as opposed to fannying about making space, getting kit out and plugging in various bits'n'bobs. That and alcohol!

I just love that you have a whole wall veneered in birdseye maple :D

Yes - my wife calls it the library. She is fed up with me saying "Darling - I fear that Colonel Mustard has been done for with a candelabra in the library".

I am renaming it the music room, or should that be music parlour?

Just bought the Geoff Chalmers 'Beginners Double Bass' course. At $79 I thought - why not? Especially considering what the instrument cost.

Loving the video course. Not too far into it, but I've learned lots already.

You've got a mix of music theory, insider tips and practical exercises. I really feel I am taking a course as opposed to learning to play 'in a fairly mechanical sense' - if you get the distinction.

  7. I'm thinking of Selina - kind of modern, classy, minimalist. Not bombastic, curvaceuous or full-bodied.

My daughter hates the shape. She is convinced there are bits missing and it qualifies as "f'ugly" (apparently!).

    Thoughts?

  8. Thanks gents - comments noted, especially on good technique from the start as opposed to unlearning all manner of evils. I'll look into that.

I'm pleasantly surprised to find the upright feels more comfortable to hold/play/use than an electric bass - which for me was always going to be the deciding factor. Pointless trying to play something that was causing me issues.

On a side note - I just sent my nephew a couple of pics of the NXT and he is arranging to come over as soon as he can to give it a go (he plays bass in an indie band, had a number of live gigs, got an EP out, in final year at school). Now, I never got that sort of response when I sent him pics of the ACG Recurve, the Warwick Corvette or the Stingray True Gold. I think there's something about the EUB/EDB that commands attention. Sort of like 'I am a real instrument [in the classical sense] - play me' (or perhaps I should just get out more!!).

    Regards,

    David

  9. Hi All

I took up electric bass guitar as a form of physio after breaking my left wrist and must have went through about 6 basses in the last 18 months - many of them bought and sold via Basschat. Just couldn't manage to play 34" without discomfort to the injured wrist. I was about to pull the trigger on a short scale, hoping that might resolve the issue, when I happened across some clips on YouTube of EUB players.

Long story short - I was completely smitten by the NS NXT4 Amber and the upright style just felt right to my left wrist. Got the NXT yesterday and love that it is just set up on its tripod, practically inviting me to have a wee noodle every time I walk into the room. My intonation is all over the place, I haven't established an ounce of muscle memory (certainly not any that helps me cope with this scale), I am murdering every tune I used to know, and my credit card has taken a hammering - but I am having such a blast! Pics below if you are interested.

So - if you have any tips you'd like to pass on, or links to good online tutorials then please fire away.
Any NXT owners out there with instrument-specific tips - feel free to chip in.

    Kind regards,

    David

How is the possibilites of catching this one up in London?

I´m from Sweden and since the shipping is like the price of a flight to London I´d rather go to London.. Was like 6 years ago or so, so I think it´s time! :)

I know it´s pretty far from Glasgow but just thought that you maybe were going there sometime anyway and I could book the flight to the same dates.

I find it boring spending ages on one song, too. :)

Very rarely need to do a gig with musicians I've never met before. Granted, I might find it a bit tight learning 20 plus songs for a gig this weekend, but I wouldn't accept a gig on so little notice. Even if I were a reader I'd prefer some kind of rehearsal beforehand, anyway.

You're probably right though, I bet people get really hacked off with Pino and his carrying on regardless. Tsk! :P

Yeah - that Palladino is giving us all a bad name!!!

Knock it on the head Pino!
