I wouldn't be too sure about that. Burning up a cab is usually user error, even if it is initiated by unrealistic marketing expectations and a lack of background knowledge.

When you turn up and it doesn't get louder you should turn it down some. If you don't it will heat up and can burn up if you lay into the bass for too long.

If it ever seems quieter but you turn up some more that is when you burn it.

The getting quieter is the driver motor getting hot and increasing resistance. Turning up instead of down makes a runaway condition where the increased voltage makes it hotter still and soon it is very very quiet.

Ratings are only a very rough guide to selection for purpose.

    So it would seem!

Volume was about 1-2 o'clock so not maxed out by any means

Thanks all. I'm going to get the RM cab looked at before I use it again. Its a mystery how the Ampeg is still going but I've lost confidence in it. I've got a gig coming up and can't risk it.

I've bought a TC BQ500 Thrust instead which seems to be just the ticket with my old Laney 410.

  3. I've recently bought a RM Evo 2 112 cab. It is rated at 300w at 8ohms. I have been running at Ampeg Portaflex 350 which delivers 250w at 8ohm in to it. The ampeg has been cutting out and last practice there was an electric short burning smell from the Ampeg as it cut out and I switched it off sharpish.

The Ampeg thankfully still works fine and has always performed well with a bigger 410 400watt rated 8ohm cab and zero issue.

Is the issue that the cab is not correctly rated or is the Ampeg overloading?

    Any help appreciated ?

  5. HI I'm in a rock Power Trio. I'm running a Ibanez Talman with a precision type tone (EMG Geezer PJ) through Ampeg Portaflex and Laney 410.

The main part of my sound is coming from my Hartke Bass Attack Preamp pedal- Discontinued but I highly recommend one if you can find one. It adds massive girth and presence to my tone. If I need a bit more colour I add in some OD from my Ampeg Scrambler pedal.

My current board looks like this:

  6. Biggest gig we've done last November. Proper venue and we are first support for a name Artist.  Enter stage from backstage trying to look cool and collected for the hundred or so early punters there lined up at the barrier. Every thing was sounding great at soundcheck, but when I start the first song I can hear myself in the monitors and front of house, but my trousers aren't exactly flapping in a bass tornado. Turn around to look at the amp and its dark. In my pre-gig nerves I've forgotten to turn on the bloody Ampeg and all I'm hearing is the DI to FOH from my preamp pedal.

Clearly punters are hearing bass so not an issue ....but at the end of first song I have a walk of shame to the amp to turn it on- Which being a Portaflex - erupts in beautiful purple light to highlight my shame in a beautiful glow...

  7. Best of the Year for me was my Ibanez Talman. I picked it up in Dawsons closing down sale for £130  new and then dropped  a set of  PJ EMG Geezer Butlers in. Its now ow my main gigging bass as it sounds monstrous (although I like the neck far less than my Yamaha BB)!!!

Worse for me was a EHX Bass Big Muff.  Failed to get any decent usable tones out of it.

Your distinctive sound comes in part from a Gibson Thunderbird, which you’ve played for decades.
When Wishbone Ash was first in the studio, I had a Harmony I bought for £5. The producer took one look and said, “No, we need a fresh, new guitar.” They rented a Fender Jazz Bass, which was completely wrong for me because it’s quite clippy if you play with a pick.

Is that when you found the Thunderbird?
First, I discovered Rickenbacker basses. I had one sent over from the States in ’71 – it was one of the few made with 21 frets and its neck broke when we were flying to Europe for a festival. I was really upset and rang up Overend Watts, the bass player in Mott the Hoople, asking if I could borrow one of his Thunderbirds. I ended up buying it and used it since.

What did you like about it?
I call it a cricket bat with wings. It’s one piece of wood from the headstock through the body, and that design is shared by Rickenbacker. I played with a pick, so I needed a guitar that had quite a bit of low-end to it. I’ve played a lot of instruments over the years, particularly for recording, and strangely, it always sounds the same. Maybe it’s more to do with me than the instrument.

Do you play with your fingers?
Yes, but I prefer my leather plectrum to fingers. It was made for me by an African guy and I have two or three with slightly different thicknesses.

What kind of strings do you use?
Rotosound. They’ve got a trashy edge to them; I use a .105 on the bottom.
