1. "Keep mouth shut, watched whats going on,nailed the kick down"

In my experience people stick together and work when they get on really well as people, moreso than as musicians. Not sure what music you are looking to play, but maybe you need to be looking for like-minded people socially as opposed to totally musically. I've got a situation at uni where i was in two bands - one with my best mate up there and he plays guitar, and even though he really annoys me sometimes, he's a great mate and when a jam doesn't work, we just kick back with a beer and everything is cool, and thus we're still together in that project, and sidelined out to a second act with a female vocalist and me on bass rather than drums (my main instrument). However the other band, i auditioned on drums and they really liked my playing but I got fed up with their general attitude and social oddities, we just didn't get on that well, and now i'm not sticking with them next year.

Hope that sorta helps, its difficult, i've always known whether it works or not straight from the outset really.

  2. I've got the Presonus Faderport. Its a single channel motorised fader, and has knobs for panning, etc. Its only one fader, but it has channel select buttons so you can flick through, and the fader moves itself to the position of the onscreen fader of the channel selected. Its a nice piece of kit and about £100.

  3. Yeah, if you get a Motu, you should be able to use the TonePort on the side as a basic USB interface without too many problems, at least enough to do some live recording. Depending on what Motu you get, if it has optical SPDif inputs on the back you can add another 2 channels. With my firepod I have a Focusrite Platinum Penta preamp with digital card plugged in that gives me another input, so if you had a Pod with Spdif output you would gain an extra channel there.

  4. Interesting. I work with an outdoor agency who do stewarding at such events and i've just been called in to work on the 5th July at a music festival. I couldn't hear which one he mentioned but I bet its this, its fairly near where our base...

  5. That setup sounds just about ok. Theres no problems with using a DI box with vocals, the DI box just insures that the signal is kept in good order by its balanced connection to the desk. Which it normally is anyway when its connected via an XLR to the desk.

Only thing to bear in mind is that the sound man has absolutely no control over the level of vocal, guitar and bass, etc - anything thats in that loop pedal comes to him as flat, so if the guitars are too quiet for example - tough - unless he can get to the desk, he can't change it. So you'll want a comprehensive sound check test beforehand to make sure the levels are right for the audience once they come out of the loop pedal.

  6. Previous poster - he said he's on an Imac - No ASIO, its all supported under the Apple coreaudio standard.

Theres a setting in audio/midi setup that lets you 'aggregate' devices together so the system seem it as 1 big device with many inputs. However even if this works, its a bit of a bodge really, getting an interface of some sort will sort you better in the long run. There may be issues involving sync and clocking so you might get pops or it might not record together in perfect time. Look at the Presonus Firepod (what I personally use) and the Motu8pre as they are both really useful interfaces to get you started in multitracking. They both take 8 xlr/jack inputs so thats 8 mic or line ins depending on how you use it - as a quick band recording you could do say 2x guitars, 1 bass and 5 channels of drums, then do vocal overdubs seperately to save inputs. Then when I track proper recordings its all 8 on drums, then overdub everything else. Hope that helps a bit.

  7. If you check a few recent replies he's been advising as "Hi this is not a reissue it is american made around 1972. cost of 4 - 6 week shipping is about £65 plus insurance. Regards Mike" etcetera and will have obviously read everyones messages to him and ignored them. If ebay arent going to pull it the only thing left to do is have a few ebayers bid battle it into some ridiculous price so no real bidders get stung and then refuse to pay on the grounds of that its been found to be a fake.

  8. Seeing this has been up for sale for ages I guess theres a few alternatives to try.

    Ebay it

Get numbers for any local bass tutors and ask if any of their students need a cheap package

Take it to a local music shop and ask if they'll do any kind of part exchange for some bits you want, ie pedals, hardcase, etc...

  9. Ditto, I won't let anything in my computer thats got a glued on label. Considering most Apple computers have slotload drives now, and I know quite a lot of people who have got budget labelled discs stuck in them, you might end up alienating half of your target audience with useless cds - get a printer and printable discs!

  10.
You’re still looking at around £350 with that though. You can pick up an Mbox mini with ProTools LE 7.4 for about £160 brand new from ebay.
ah yeah totally, they're more expensive than one with just a few channels, however I was replying to the bit about the guy wanting to record a full band - with that you really want 8 channels for just the drums, then track everything on top of that.

But yeah, if you just want to track a bass or guitar, a basic usb-jack will do ok, better yet a basic 2 channel interface with provision for zero latency monitoring and phantom power were you to use a condenser mic to track vocals.

  11. The cold tap seems to be keeping the blisters down, I'll work through the pain until the pain is no more!

Bennifer is a nickname I got because my hair got so long it was almost like a womans - jennifer/ben hybrid!

Cheers for the welcome and look forward to getting involved on the board :) is there a way to search on here for members in your area? Especially stuff in the for sale!...

  12.
no, that isn't the case. The speaker rating is simply how much power you can put into it before it shakes itself to bits and/or the glue melts in the voice coil. Tha amplifier doesn't care how close the speaker is to death.

On the other hand, a less efficient speaker needs more input power than an efficient one for a given sound pressure level, so that _will_ work the amplifier harder.

    definitely!
True, but surely if you max out the amp, although the speaker can take it, the clipping thats going to occur from pushing an amp to its limit can damage the speaker. Certainly in Live sound PA terms ive always been recommended to run an amp way more powerful than the speaker - the amp can be run at a quarter or half capacity, so its not getting strained or anywhere near clipping, and the speaker, well you arent running that to the limit either so nothing breaks. Correct me if im wrong!

  13. Haha, come to think about it, I do drink a lot of cheap cider. Personally i'm quite the packhorse though, i'm one of the fussy ones that doesn't like other people touching my kit! Infact, i've been known to help out other bands at gigs - although i'm never getting involved with carrying an 8x10 ampeg cab down a narrow staircase into a cellar venue ever again!!!

  14.
Looking forward to see what responses you get as I have been thinking about an audio interface for a while now for my mac and keep looking at something that will do the full band but that would probably cost a few hundred pounds and I will then probably only use it occasionally so the best option for me would be a cheap, simple, one channel interface to use with garageband.

    Tony
Some of the best cheap audio interfaces suitable for that are the Motu 8pre and the Presonus Firepod. I've personally got the Firepod, it has 8 XLR inputs on the front and a further stereo 2 channel Spdif input on the back, which I link a fairly classy Focusrite Penta Preamp/Compressor into to give me an extra channel in. Its a rock solid system and sounds great. I haven't used the 8pre but its about the same price, it has the bonus of having ADAT which lets you link in a further 8 channels if you buy another rack preamp strip.

Of course, if you're a bit sketchy about affording an interface with that many channels, you're probably going to be screwed when it comes to recording in as you probably won't have any microphones either! A decent drum mic kits gonna set you back at least 500 quid!

    Hope that helps.

  15. Hey guys, just signed up and thought i'd post something in here.

I'm Ben, 21 years of age currently living between Camberley Surrey, my hometown, and Lincoln, where I go to uni taking a film course. I've been playing drums for 5 or so years now, a beautiful Premier Artist kit with Sabian cymbals. However i've got to the stage where living back in Camberley over summer, I can't really practise the drums that much as im back living with the parents and the noise is driving them nuts! I always planned on learning bass and only went to drums because a mate gave me a kit for free back when I was procuring an instrument. So now im doing both, bass being something I can practise in pretty much silence whenever I like, aka midnight when im bored and can't smash the drums.

An old college friend sold me an Aria bass that she believes is an IGB30, its totally mint, might as well have never been out of the box, not a single scratch, just 40 pounds - feels like a bargain and giving me something to learn on for fun. Don't have an amp at the moment but i've got a home recording studio setup so just running through my rack of bits and bobs and out of my monitors, running AmpegSVX at the moment for a bit of modelling.

Getting on quite well with the bass now, have been playing a couple of weeks and I think the rhythm from the drums has helped me loads, now im just getting my fingers past the point of severe pain, which I hope stops soon!

Anywho, thats enough of a rant, thats me done until I get a job sorted and can afford to look into some kind of nice amp :)
