1.
First obvious difference was much higher tension
That's not a quality unique to flatwounds - I use Thomastik Flats and they are very, very low tension strings. Almost like rubber bands. I guess it comes down to the materials used.

  2. Asking someone to do a price match on a private sale against some random ebay item is just plain rude. I won't respond to such requests.

Part of me thinks that Warwick should stop making thumbs for a few years to drive up perceived value. These are great instruments (I own two) , but in the UK fashion for Fenders is utterly dominant at the moment.

Anyway good luck with the sale, it's a very fair price. Have a bump.

Good player, but seems to have a planet-sized ego....

  4.
After returning my bass to the shop, and not hearing anything from them for two months (i know, but what with xmas, and being in and out of hospital i just didn't get round to calling them), i finally got in touch with them to see what is happening with my bass. The response is sort of good and bad,
"The Fender rep has had a look at it, and is of the same view as us (this is the quality that is to be expected from a bass in this price range), but he is willing to exchange it for you, although he has said that the replacement might not be any better."
I can't get over this comment, and will definatly be writing to Fender UK to see what their view is on this.
Also, they annoyingly can't get hold of a replacement until February.
:)

BS. You are being jerked around. These are not hard instruments to source, and none I've seen have had this issue. Complain to trading standards and try to get your money back.

  5. Okay, so part one is complete - the bass has been bought. Fiesta red! These really are very nicely made and very light too. The neck is absolutely spot on.

The basswood body is interesting when compared to my alder fenders. What it lacks in depth it seems to gain in sustain.

Next it'll be off for a defret in the new year. For the money all in i guess i could have bought a mex fretless but i wasn't as impressed with ones that i tried as i am with this.

    Cheers-

  6. I'm only in my early thirties and am quite happy noodling away at home. Did a few gigs in my 20s but I knew then that the "gigging band" lifestyle just wasn't for me.

In fact the most fun I had was as a pit muso in a theatre production at the Edinburgh festival in 2000. Lots of fun and no "rock star" bullshit. I may do that again in some sort of "am-dram" capacity....

I enjoy playing for its own sake, and I enjoy owning guitars as nice objects to have around the house.

  7. Hi,

So I've been on the lookout for a fretless P and given that I'm not in the market for the expensive Franklin sig I was mulling getting a fiesta red CV Squier P and having it professionally de-fretted. I might consider the fretless VMJ but I think I'd prefer a mellower, woodier tone. I find Ebonol too bright for my taste.

A good idea? Also, do you folks think that the rosewood board would stand up to Thomastic flats? My instinct is that it should be fine for years.

    Cheers,

  8. Hi,

I'm considering trading my lovely Thumb NT4 for an equally lovely Thumb NT4 unlined fretless. The year of the bass is 2005.

I'd be keen to get a Warwick of a similar age with a nicely figured piece of bubinga. Less interested in vintage Warwicks.

I'm reluctant to get this converted as it's a great bass as it stands.

I'm not interested in selling at this point. Trades in London would be ideal if possible.

    Many Thanks,
    Rick
