When it comes to basses. I heartily recommend yamaha for an incredible bang for buck ratio.

Mine was sub £100 on ebay and I find it the perfect animal. I wander in to music shops and play fenders, spectors etc. And think "that's lovely, I'll buy that when payday comes around". When I get home I play my yamaha and realise that the bass I'd just chosen is only marginally better than the bass I own, and certainly not hundreds of pounds better.

+1 to this. I absolutely love my Yamaha. In fact I also have an RBX270J like 'Dave the Bass' and you can't go too far wrong. Beautifully put together, great tonal range (P & J pups), really nice slim neck and not too heavy. And again, all for under £100 on ebay.

Also, don't be put off by the low price of the Harley Benton Vintage Series basses. From what other Basschatters have said about them on here they are really great basses for little money. Look great, Wilkinson pick-ups. Tempted by one of the Jazzes myself.

Finally, IMHO, bass first then lessons for all the reasons stated by other people above.

2. Went to see Ade Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds at the local venue last night. Excellent musicianship, great entertainment and the best game of 'Name That Tune' you could wish for. Top notch. Recommended.

3. Ah, now then. Top of the head responses:-

Dave Holland Quintet - Prime Directive
Esbjorn Svensson Trio - Seven Days of Falling
The Smiths - The Smiths
The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus
Ian Dury and the Blockheads - New Boots and Panties
Nirvana - Incesticide
Supergrass - I Should Coco
Longpigs - The Sun is Often Out
The Specials - Specials
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am - That's What I am Not.

Plus plenty of others. Actually, those werent really off the top of my head either, Had to think a bit there.

Great thread btw.

4. Thanks chaps for the responses. Looking at a couple of Victor Wooten's videos, I am clearly hitting the strings too hard and my technique is going to take a lot of work but at least that has steered me in the right direction. More research. More practice.
Cheers.

5. Ok, I like a nice low action on my bass for my usual finger-style playing. Trying my hand at a bit of slap tho and all I am getting is fret clatter and not much in the way of nice noises. Is there an optimum sort of set-up/action for playing slap bass or is it more down to technique? Any advice appreciated. Many thanks.

6. Welcome M-o-N.

Your story sounds almost identical to mine. Tenor Sax player converted to bass after a long-term desire to play which has gone on for probably 30 years before I have finally got round to it. Sad to say my sax is fairly redundant at the moment but I just can't put this fantastic instrument down. As you say, this is most definitely fun! I do fear though that ultimately it is also going to be very expensive. Serious GAS on the go!

7. Welcome Ade. I am also a bit of a newbie. I know what you mean about your Yamaha tho. I have a P bass and an RBX270J and the Yammy wins hands down every time. Mind you, my P is a complete pile of crap! Enjoy the forum.

8. .....and here is a distant cousin, who gets far less love than she deserves since bass came in to my life!

9. Nothing special.........but I love it all the same. My RBX270J

10. Thanks all for all your advice and I am now even happier with my purchase. Sounds like I have struck lucky at that price. I actually felt guilty taking the bass from the guy selling it when I picked it up, but that's auctions for you I guess.
Anyway, I will be off to get a proper set up on the bass now as recommended but how much should I be expecting to pay for this??
I might also just replace the plastic control knobs for some nice black metal ones just because, well....they're plastic!
Thanks again all.

11. I am a new player (about 5 months) and have been self-teaching with the help of one or two decent on-line tuition sites. My weapon for these early months has been an Encore P-Bass (yes, I know!) and this has got me off the ground but I have been constantly scanning Ebay for a suitable (cheap) upgrade. I think I have finally come up trumps with a Yamaha RBX270J in a natural wood finish, complete with a quality padded Warwick Rockbag, lead and spare set of Rotosounds all for the princely sum of £35! Having cleaned off years of grime on the fretboard and polished up the frets it is looking and sounding sweet (photo attached).
As I have saved myself a bit of cash here, has anyone with experience of Yammy basses got any recommendations for upgrades or would you suggest I just leave as is?

12. Hi all. Mid - forties, long time tenor sax player from Suffolk with an even longer time desire to play bass and that is exactly what I have been doing for the last couple of months. Picked up a cheap P bass copy on ebay just to see how I got on and have to say I am hooked (I knew I would be!).
So, with a good musical background I am now self-teaching (does everyone do that?) with the aid of one or two decent on-line tuition platforms.
Just playing for fun at the moment but would love to find a band to play in locally eventually. My musical leanings are wide and varied from punk, indie and funk to ska and a huge dose of jazz on the side and I will give anything a go just for the love of playing the bass and to learn.
Now looking to upgrade on a limited budget, probably to a Jazz, so any advice or pointers very welcome.
Looking forward to joining in with the bass 'community'.
Cheers
