1.
I think life insurance is a much better bet.
I've always found that life insurance has such crap sustain though?

Buying a quality bass (or two, three, four, five) gives you pleasure and an investment of sorts. Got to admit that when buying my Ric that i bought a colour that i knew would be collectable in the future, if not now. I would also say that Rickenbackers, both vintage and new are quite sound investments because of RIC's inability, or indifference, to meet demand.

  2. Looks real to me...certainly a neck through. As Clarky said, not all Rics are bound and he's right that if you want confirmation either way you should go to the RicResource forum. Don't stay too long though, some of them are enough to put you off buying a Ric :)

  3.
So you mean Americans are like North Koreans in some ways?
Only if they're bass playing North Koreans...

...what got me thinking about this was one of my mates, who plays guitard, said that i would fit right in when i told him i was gonna start playing bass, cos all bas players are weirdos. Now, i wouldn't say that i'm weird...but then an again, i'm of the belief that anyone who calls himself 'crazy' or 'weird' something or other, isn't weird at all...so does this in itself me make me weird? Or just confused?

Anyone fancy joining the bass player called 'Al' club?

  4.
(I also have no reason and evidence to suggest the Serbs as a race are any better or worse than anyother group of people)
Other than their shifty eyes and propensity for starting civil and world wars...neither have i.

Anyway...back to the question in hand: are bassists, particularly those of the North American persuasion, strange?

  5.
People from different cultures are - different. Doesn't mean they're wrong or right or strange. They may be strange compared to our comparatively small life experience. My work has meant me coming into contact with people from a huge number of cultures, and I find it absolutely facinating!
Well I've worked with a lot of people from other 'cultures' as you put it and yes, they can be fascinating. On the other hand, Americans and i mean the man on the street, not artists/writers/musos etc, seem disconnected from reality in some ways. They live in one of the largest and most advanced countries on the world but the majority have never been outside the state they were born in...so i suppose they are going to be disconnected somewhat if all they know about the world is what CNN tells them. I'm not saying per se that Americans are bad, well not as bad as the Serbs anyway...just that they're strange and no amount of semantic tomfoolery is gonna change that....nosirreee bob.

  6. Been browsing Talkbass for want of something better to do and have noticed that they have twee little clubs for everything from Rickenbackers to tatoos. It's like everyone has to start a club or they're no-one :)

I think this is very strange behaviour and does little to disavow me of the opinion that the majority of yanks are living on another planet, never mind another continent. If you really want to be scared at this time of night, go and have a look at the thread showing the mad bastards playing....some of these guys are seriously into themselves...some nice basses though.

Is this further evidence that all bass players are a little strange? Or is just further evidence that yanks are strange?

  7. Stan Stammers, Spear of Destiny

    Alan Anton ; Cowboy Junkies

    Robert Vickers; The Go-betweens

Martin Casey; The Triffids and the Bad Seeds

    Tracey Pew; The Birthday Party

Warwick Gilbert ; Radio Birdman , original lineup.

....and many, many other obscure bassists that appear in my Cd collection :)

  8. This is a 'Colour of the Year' model in Montezuma Brown...it was produced only in 2003.

Condition is excellent. All case candy present and correct, case has key, case is in very good condition.

I'm asking £1050 INC POST. No offers and i wont be dropping the price as it doesn't really have to go, i'll just hang onto it if it doesn't shift at this price, as it will only gain in value for Ric collectors.

Tow of the following images show some white paint scuffs on the headstocks which were there when i bought the bass. Another image shows a small knock on the binding which i put there. Apart from those barely visible marks the bass is truly unmarked other than light polishing swirl. Tail lift not a problem.

  9.
A Rickenbacker in Fireglo

    ................and a sunburst fretless 70's P

and one of the new GK micro range amps if and when I see one

    and.....................etc etc etc
I've done gas'ing for Rics...i've moved on to Gretsch's now....have my eye on a Broadcaster now that i've tried the Thunder Jet which, incidentally, grows on me day by day...lovely growl from the TV Jones pups with bottom end bigger and rounder than my grannys arse.

  10.
IMO shorts scale is UNDER 31" scale so no... (Generally 32" is considered to be medium scale)

I've found that the biggest problem with short scales is finding a set of strings the produced decent notes below open A. My first bass a much modified Burns artist has a 29.5 scale length, and it wasn't until I got some specially made Newtone strings for it that I could confidently play note on the E string without it turning into a muddy thump.
My Thunder Jet has loads of well defined bottom end and a nice growl when the treble Pup is dialed in just so. I love this bass. Nice and compact, very light and beautifully finished...got a good price on it from Promenade Music too. Find it a shame that this bass isn't bettter known, definitely one of my better blind buys and one i mean to hold on to.

  11.
I have the same mixed feelings about genres. One minute I can be playing thrash metal and loving it. Next I move to prog rock. Next I move to funk, next to reggae, etc. I like too many genres, and I don't know which to settle on.
Why should you settle on any one genre? Music is there to be consumed like food...you wouldn't eat just chips would you? Only thing i find problematic about having a catholic taste when it comes to music is that it costs you a lot more than being narrow minded

This week alone i have bought Cd's by Les Claypool, Miles Davis, Deep Purple, The Allman Brothers and The Knack....i recently went through a phase of replacing all the punk albums i had back in the 70's before i sold them all to a mate to buy fags and drink. Though on reflection, maybe Sham 69 would have been better left in the past :)

  12.
Do it online and Parcelforce will collect it from you. i had to do that when my local Citylink depot closed down and didn't have time to go to the new one.

Just enter the dimensions and rough weight and Bob's your auntie's live in lover.
I wouldn't use Parcelfarce to send a turd in a box, never mind an expensive piece of musical equipment....bunch of incompetents in my experience.

  13. I have one of these bought November 2007 for sale.

  14. I recently bought an Ibanez AGB200 semi acoustic which is a 30 incher and have toally and utterly fallen in love with this scale.

I currently have this and the Controversial P-bass which is 4/4 and a Ric 4003 which is just a wee bit shorter than full scale. I almost cannot put the Ibanez down :) It seems to fit me perfectly and feel so natural when playing and it's not as if i have particularly small hands or arms, as a matter of fact, my knuckles almost scrape the ground and friends are always saying that i could tie my laces without bending over, my hands are bigger than average too.

It's not just the size that makes me love this bass though, the sound is great for an instrument selling for less than £300 quid....lovely tones when both pups are used...sounds almost like an upright at times. There's no disguising that it's a budget instrument when you look at it though, the gold hardware kind of cheapens the look for me. The tuners are pretty crap too, a bit too much play and the white plastic adds to the cheap look. Fingerboard and body are very nice however and the frets are nice and even. It's still got the stock strings on but i intend to swap them over for some D'Addario Flatwound Chromes. It's a keeper for sure, this one!

Unfortunately it's opened a can of worms and has resulted in me ordering another short scale bass. I've gone and ordered a Gretsch Thunder Jet which i've read really good things about but have never played... i think that i'm gonna stick with short scale from now on even if people do call me a sissy/pantywaist/girls blouse etc
