there's seems a common thread here, communication, I always try and reply to emails unless it's obvious one is not needed, after all it doesn't cost anything, our guitarist is terrible at replying, but if he occasionally sends one out and nobody replies straight away we get 'is my email not worthy of a reply then?' I just don't understand how people can be so hypocritical.

Yeah I must admit the communication is awful in my band too.

Often I've turned up to practice having learnt a few new songs only to get there and the singer had apparently decided that they didnt like it after agreeing to it the week before - doesnt tell anyone.

  2. Messing it up three times is pretty bad...

I'd ask for a refund or at least a discount of 40%-50% for the fact that they have sent you a unclean product that is still incorrect after you've given them 3 opportunities to make it right and its taken a month.

It's not fair for you to pay for a product that doesn't work and for a service that doesn't exist.

Without swearing at them, give them a serious phone call...

  3. I remember reading somewhere about sound proofing, for Guitars its generally easy, but the low frequency of a bass however travels through walls considerably more - Which is why you only really hear the bass player when you go to the toilet at a gig. (I had to tell my girlfriend to go do this once becuase she didnt know what I was actually playing  )

I would just try and add as much thickness to those walls as possible or turn down.

I'm 33. I am probably too old for the young student bands (eg those of 18-21) but too young at heart for what many in this country class as 'normal' for a 33 year old. Mr career has to be number one to me, and takes precedence over my music time. Personally, I prefer playing music all day, but I can't! Hence, its a great way to relax and I never find it boring. In fact, it de-stresses me.

Age isn't a problem, but I can't see myself hanging out with 18 year old students who have far too much time on their hands (and I envy them after being like that at Uni), or, what I personally see as 'settling' for a old rock band playing local pubs just doing cover sets to earn. No more poor renditions of AC/DC or Kings of Leon...please...I can't handle it!

I'm 21 and I cant see myself playing with people my own age. Without painting them all with the same brush the following problems usually occur:

    - Some don't drive
    - Unreliable
    - Can't afford reahearsal space because they work part time
    - Can't be bothered to practice
    - Immature attitude towards everything
    - No communication

Its because of the above I generally avoid playing with people the same age or younger than me.

For me if the music is there and good, I couldnt care less how old someone was as long as I got on with them.

I mean who would turn Billy Sheehan away because of his age?

(Apologies for moving slightly off topic there)

The other thing of course is that they might actually be frightened of gigging - it takes a fair bit of courage to stand there in front of an audience for the very first time.

I stood behind a brick pillar on my first gig - all the audience could see was my right elbow and bass headstock. :D
Many people say that I should readopt that performance method... <_<

Perhaps persuade them to go to a plug and play night somewhere and just do two or three songs?

Like it, the first gig I played was stood directly behind a PA speaker. I can imagine I would of looked like I had a speaker for a head

I've suggested open mic nights, but I get the 'oh well I'd rather use my guitar rig' excuse. I've been offered a little half hour support slot which is again met with the same excuse.

Every song will get boring when you've been playing it for 10months without a gig. :D

    Indeed it bloody does!

I should start throwing in some ZZ Top dance moves to trying brighten things up for myself...

I didn't get the job because, and I quote 'you're probably the better musician but the other guy just looked right.'

    I learned alot that day!

I too had a similar experience...

The band I was looking to join was an orginals band that wanted to do rock/metal music.

I turned up a few weeks and all they talked about was image, stage names and band names BEFORE any note was even played on a instrument. I had a moan and asked why we wernt doing anything or even sharing musical ideas as I was turning up with all my gear after an 45 min drive to not even play music.

A few days later I got dumped because I didnt have the 'emo look'... (I'm too tall, blonde hair, no tattoos).

I had never been so confused before - how could I be dumped before they've even heard me play!?

  8. I've always used Laney amplifiers.

When I first joined a band my dad gave me this big old huge laney 4x10 combo which is older than me (I'm 21) and to this day its the best amp we've both used (He's using a trace elliot rig now), but as its older than old I thought it'd be best not risk using it in a gig incase it breaks down - Eventhough it never has!

So I went and recenly brought a Laney Cab and Head (which i've linked below) for £500 altogether and it is absolutely awesome - lighter to carry as well.

I know you're asking for combo amps but if you can afford £500ish i would highley reccommend this Laney rig...

Thats my set up.. and I am seriously pleased with it for the money.

  9. Hello all!

Found this site through another bass forum weirdly enough and as its UK based I'd prefer to use this one :D

I've been playing guitar since I was 13 but switched to bass a few years back now and play your everyday boring Fender Precision bass but its my pride and joy!

I have a Fender Dimension bass as well which I was an impulse buy because it looked so great but thinking back I obviously brought it on looks alone which is a school boy error as I cant stand to play the thing now.

Signed up to JamPlay recently which i've really been enjoying - learning from the likes of the great Billy Sheehan!

Will be sticking around making posts where I think I can contribute.

    See you all around!
