Use some sort of hearing protection. Once you acquire tinnitus, the ringing in the ears is with you 24/7/365, and there is no known cure. I have read where some people have admitted they would rather be deaf, to get some relief from the constant ringing.
Totally agree with this, but the only thing with tinnitus is that even if you go deaf, it doesn't go away :( :(.

I started using plugs about 3 years ago, and have never regretted it. I've got a set of Alpines that have done ok so far, but a set of mouldeds are on my wanted list.

The only way to learn to play faster is to play what you can play slowly, only play it faster. If you can play something at 100 bpm, the only way to learn to play it at 200 bpm is to keep trying i.e practice. I see playing with a metronome as no different to playing with a drumm machine or playing along with a record. The only advice I have is to play things as fast as you can, not as fast as you can't ;)

Frankly, I say go with the metronome.

Sound advice there :).

3. If you can't get on with floating thumb, try this:

This is pretty much the technique I've used in the last 15 years playing a 5 string. It'll probably be the case that you can use this on a 6 as Adam Nitti does here.

I was working as a waiter the other weekend on a function organized by a cricket club in a countryside near Swindon, there was a very good band, I chatted with the bassist a bit. Today I bought the new issue of BGM, where Paul Geary is mentioned a couple of times, and I think it was him! He played a 4-string jazz-style white Overwater bass (said that it was the first time in a long time that he was giggin with a four string) and an Orange rig, Terror Bass head and two of those funny 2x12 cabs that look like 1x12s (again, he said it was his first time gigging those). The guy sounded and played seriously good. They played some old r&b and soul covers, and it was a pleasure to listen to it.

That sounds like PG - I was lucky enough to play that OW of his in a lesson a couple of weeks ago :).

The name of the band that he plays with (when he's not playing alongside Nik Kershaw or Mary J. Blige in Europe) is called The Revelators. Haven't seen them as yet, but plan on doing so very soon. :)

6. I've subscribed to it - the only real problem I have with it is that there seemed to be a bit of latency with the videos in issue 2. It took about 15 mins to watch a video that was supposed to last about 7 mins.

Apart from that, I think it's ok.

7. Hi Joel,
Welcome aboard - I subscribe to the mag (thanks to the missus buying it for me for chrimbo) & quite enjoy reading it.

Would I be right in saying the boo-boo in the most recent issue was Andrew McKinney being called Paul Geary ? I had a lesson with Paul that night & we had a chuckle about it..

Sounds like cramp

But interesting question, being self taught, never had any taught input into how best to hold/play bass - you see some players with it up around their neck, some slung low, anyone with thoughts on advised alignment of arms, wrists etc?

This guy talks a lot of good sense when it comes to bass playing - one of the best teachers (IMO) on the net.

Watched a bit of Lee's set with Steve Hackett at the IoW festival on telly last night.

Typically mad Hackett. Dunno who's idea it was to book him - the field looked pretty sparsely populated...!

A lot of people who went to the festival left early Sunday due to weather - our local news covers the island, and because the weather's been so bad over there, a lot of vehicles got trapped in the mud. The police had to recruit extra help in getting people out.

Some nice playing on Robert Cray's stuff. Not sure who the bassist is though...

1st track - bass player is Richard Cousins.
2nd track - Karl Sevareid

11. These guys are worth a listen:
Tommy Shannon (SRV)
Richard Cousins & Karl Sevareid (Robert Cray)
Roscoe Beck (Robben Ford)
Johnny B. Gayden (Albert Collins)
Greg Rzab (Buddy Guy)
Donald "Duck" Dunn (Albert King's Stax albums)

12. Definitely advise using a wide strap (Comfort Strapp or the Levys Leather wide strap is very good).

As others have said above, try & keep an upright posture (standing with your feet flat on the floor & slightly apart helps too). The other thing to do is to keep the instrument in the same position sitting & standing. Try & avoid any sharp bends in the wrists as this also creates problems further down the line (RSI, Carpal Tunnel. Tendonitis, etc...).

Then there's all those C&W I-IV-I-IV players whom have about as much motivation as a McDonalds Waiter.
I think you'll find a lot of those C&W I-IV- I-IV players are earning a very nice living in Nashville - guys like Dave Pomeroy, Mike Brignardello, Larry Paxton, Glenn Worf, & Hutch Hutchison also do other types of gigs that don't involve playing root - five or ice cream changes....

They're not doing regular 9-5's like you & me - they're more talented than people think.
