  1. Yeah I thought it would be, offering a P/J configuration (my Westone has a large pickup in that position and you can tell form the poles that it's a P shape pup). From the body wood I'm guessing you have lots of mids available :)

  2. I've read that the Toneriders are what Fender use for the Squier Classic Vibe series - I've also read that the Squier CV Precision is a warmer sounding bass compared to the Squier Vintage Modified P (though I like my VM, haven't heard a CV P). Might be just what you need.

  3. Replace with like for like. If you replace a 250k pot with a 500k pot there'll be an increase in treble response. The usual rule of thumb is use 250k pots for single coil pickups and 500k pots for humbuckers (which are naturally 'darker' sounding - such as those found on a Gibson Thunderbird which need a 500k pot to sound right). The capacitor is a .047mfd (microfarad).

  4. The value of the capacitor as noted only really has much effect as you turn down the tone control, lower value capacitors (such as the .022mfd) will cut the treble less when the tone control is fully closed, as you increase the value of a capacitor (up to .047mfd) then more treble gets cut when the tone control is fully closed. The tolerance of a .047mfd might bring it close to .05mfd and vice versa so there's probably little point in worrying about that. One thing you haven't mentioned is whether there are any metal earthing plates under the pickups (I assume there were from your description of how it was earthed). Apparently these can affect the tone from bass pickups (they're regularly found under split Precision pickups) and your new Barts might not need any (or be adversely affected by the presence of earthing plates - you might need to ask Bartolini for advice) so that might be your next move. If the plates are there still earth them and make sure all your earthing connections are sound (but as I say the plates might not be needed).

Another thing, check what value pots are needed for the Barts... do they recommend 250K or 500K pots?

  5. I've never heard this with any of my basses (4 of which are active) but it does seem to be an electronics problem with the instrument (as you've managed to eliminate all else). Pots are simple components and I can't see how they could behave in the manner you've described, same goes for the pickup which leaves the active EQ module. You could replace the EQ section with an advanced John East module that offers both traditional Stingray and more flexible tone control like this http://www.east-uk.com/index.php/bass/mmsr/mmsr-4-knob-3-band.html though I'm sure there are less expensive alternatives.

  6. Kill two birds with one stone by choosing a band name from the list of typefaces and that's your look sorted http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_typefaces

For example, 'Dom Casual' becomes a 50s, 60s style surf rock, sci-fi and TV theme music influenced band http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dom_Casual

  7. With the SR series it's usually the higher the number the better the model with more interesting body woods, extra strengthening in the necks, better hardware, pickups and electronics. The Ergodyne is quite a different beast - there are different models in the range; I think most of them have Luthite bodies (man-made material) and the high end model has both conventional pickups and piezos in the bridge.

Cheers, the body previously had a side jack/through body, both are now defunct features. I plan on having a see through pickguard made by bass doc when he's feeling better. I'm also picking up a walnut one! :)

I like the sound of a see through scratchplate - nice idea!

  9. When I started selling a few things on eBay I couldn't withdraw any funds from PayPal until I'd been proven to be a legitimate seller and received feedback, in effect the funds were held in escrow and obviously when everything went smoothly for the buyer I was able to access my money. Can you email your concerns to PayPal to see if they're able to confirm that you're covered?
