1.
Yes, interesting way of looking at it, and, I'm sure, a good one. However, comparing to the voice, the wood of a guitar is rather like the flesh that holds the vocal chords. Not recognisable on its own, but then neither are the strings (or vocal chords) recognisable on their own. The whole voice, the sum of these and other parts, is though, as you say. Rather like recognising a Telecaster, or a Precision down the telephone or in a stadium. Perhaps not just the wood.
An ovangkol neck/bubinga strat won't sound like a fender ash or alder/maple/rosewood strat. Concerning the Pbass , any pickup place in this position will sound just like/ or almost like a pbass anyway when you add a pickup closer to the bridge (contact point of vibration between body and string) then you hear the difference. The voice doesn't depend on the flesh , just as the tonewoods aren't the flesh but the vocal signature of the instrument. And there is an exchange between strings and wood as they vibrate , for the body dictates how the strings will vibrate, and the strings make the body vibrate too (stiffer bass, heavier bass , more "perceived" tension..). Of course it's not just a matter of wood species.
2. Nay , 130 is heavy enough for me , just like 95 is my favorite on 34" E string..But these are also rotosound swing bass 66. 33" isn't very far from 31". But hey , once again , I've got two 34" and the one with the stiffer neck seems ( I said SEEMS) to have more tension all things being equal , I find it harder to play. Tension is a very tricky thing as percieved tension varies when the strings are moving according to how much resistance they face (stiffer or heavier woods etc..).
3. Big gauge starts at 130 for the low b , 120 would be too light.
4. It's still in Tom's workshop , we need to wait for the neck to stabilize after the first string tuning .
5. Hi there , it will be strung BEADGC (Rotosound swing bass 66) big gauge, and as you may know those strings have tension for ever. It seems that the preamp has not left UK yet , that's... I really need this bass.. As far as the scale length is concerned, with all things equal (and when the strings aren't moving) 35" is better than 31" for this type of setting...Now when neck stiffness(very important) , string gauge(and mass) , pickup placement and general construction are part of the equation, and especially when you're actually playing, 31" can sound as good as 35" and "percieved" tension (feel) can be the same..or even better !35" Low B can sound very bad too , never met a 35" bass that sounded like pooh ? That's the result of poor construction. Now if it really doesn't work....Which I doubt because his "thirty" model(30") has the same" felt" tension and sound than any 34" ...But if it doesn't work EADGCF is not a problem for me . But I know it will work. Tom really knows what he does, and he does high quality construction.
6. Everything is thought to give perfect access the high notes ! ( And he's still waiting for the east preamp )

19. I think wood gives a "voice" to the instrument. Pickups, preamp , amp , room and so and so are will just bear how this voice will be transfered , and how it will be perceived. But even when on the phone with a friend , they still recognise your voice even through the smallest unit. If you speak in a stadium people who know you will recognise your voice , even with that huge reverb , and with any mic , they still will be able to say who's talking. That's what tonewood is about , giving a "vocal identity" to the instrument.
20. OOps , I'm not the builder , just the customer my friend. This is the bass Tom Marceau is making for me . For the moment he puts John East preamps in the basses , but I think he'll soon have his own preamp .
21. Yes sir !! Matching pickups cover is also quite magnificient !
