  1. I did try a Downtown Express and was underwhelmed. It was pretty low gain too, as someone mentioned.

I ended up getting a GK Plex, which is one hell of a unit. Absolutely perfect for what I need.

Cheers for all the opinions and recommendations!

any chance you can let me have the dimensions on this please so I can get a courier quote? In Devon so bit far to collect, kicking myself for missing one of these that came up in Somerset earlier this year

No problem, Chris - I'll measure the box when I get in later.

The humble Zoom B3 can yield a few surprisingly decent 80s synth sounds if you mess around with it I've found. This is a patch I use for Whitney's I Wanna Dance With Somebody and anything else that sounds DX7-esque...

It's not the greatest for quick-ish runs as the demo shows towards the end, but the tracking is fine for the most part if you watch your technique and keep your lines steady. That patch could probably use a little octave but I'm maxed out at three slots on the B3...time to look at an MS-60B I think!

Gone back to this and picked up a B3n from dannybuoy - time to do some serious fiddling!

seriously check out the Future Impact. I programmed a convincing “Ain’t Nobody” patch for it last year (though I may tweak it with the new software). I’m pretty sure I could get close to the WH track too if I haven’t already.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that if you need the extra speed/accuracy of keys, you can simply plug in a cheap MIDI keyboard into the FI and play the line on keys and even switch seamlessly between it and bass mid-song.

    This is intriguing...

Could this be answer as it is in budget?

I think probably a bit of overkill for what I'm after, but cheers anyway!

  6. Purple Chili 115 without tweeter, (400W, 8Ohms) in excellent condition, with padded cover. 19kg on my bathroom scales. Made in the UK.

£150. Cab is based in Manchester, but happy to drive a bit for petrol money or courier if you arrange and pay (I have a box).

    Cheers,

  7. Zoom B1on multi-effects in excellent condition, with box and manual. I've owned it from new and only ever used it as a headphone amp in the house.

  8. I'm looking for a preamp DI to use as a basic fly-rig with an FRFR speaker. I'm most bothered about the eq, but decent (and switchable) comp and dirt are important too. Not fussed about use as a headphone amp and size isn't hugely important, as long as it'll fit in the pocket of a gig bag.

I've got an Eden WTDI pedal on my main board and l love the EQ, but no dirt and the comp (which is perfectly useable) isn't switchable. Briefly owned an EHX Battalion a few years back, but never used it for this purpose, as always took a rig out then.

Don't really want to spend more than £200. TC Spectradrive? Fender Downtown Express? Suggest away...

You may be sick of having a response like this but honestly if you want something cost effective, easily changeable and robust I'd go down the octaver and dirt route. Yes it isn't as cool as a synth and if you are replicating specific sounds it mightn't work but if you're after something to generally sound like that then this might work.

I'm using an MXR Bass Octave Deluxe as it has the best analog tracking (the EBS sounds considerably better IMO but just doesnt cut it tracking wise for me). and an EBS Multidrive at the moment for my dirt / synth sounds.

Works a treat and allows me to swap out octavers and drives when I like to suit my tastes.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks, Matt - think I'll try this.

    Cheers,
