The health and safety officer was correct to be fair.You are still around to tell the tale, so the pass probably saved you from a nasty accident

Ok.Thanks everyone for your help.I will pass on the knowledge.I will print out this page so he can make up his own mind about it.It is a good looking bass though, and just seems ashame to leave it in a case.If it were mine, i would get a nice stand, and put it on display in the corner of a darkish room.

OK, thanks for the replies.I have told him he should insure it for at least £1200, get it out of the case, and put it on a stand.He never intends to play it again, but as soon as i learn something decent to play, i will try to persuade him to let me have a go on it. It was more for insurance value to be honest.He said he had worked hard, and traded in a Rickenbacker for it, and holds to many memories for him to part with it.

I guessed that would be the answer but i thought i would ask .It does sound like a mammoth task.

So are you saying that guitar lessons is a new phenomona that has only just started? Some people may want to take the youtube route, that is fine.Me personally, i wouldn`t know what a good youtube video is.Some people like myself want to learn from the tried and tested teacher. Others want to teach themselves.How do you teach yourself though, that is the question? So how do you teach yourself to play bass? I wouldn`t know where to start.From a book, which is not really any different to the youtube route, or teacher, as you still have an aid to learning.What other alternatives are there.Do you just pick up a bass and instantly know how to play?
The only aim we have at the end is too play the Bass to a decent standard.Does it really matter how you get there? The way you posted makes you sound very elitist

I would do but he he is old, and no internet.That is why i said i would try to find out,He doesn`t want to sell it, but i told him he should get insurance for it if it is worth £800.I did find one ad that wanted £1200, but it aint all original, so dubious whether it is worth that.

I,m thinking about selling or swapping my 1977 vintage P Bass as its a bit too heavy for me theses days!
All serious offers considered or swaps for similar quality instruments, I,m thinking about a stingray or maybe a Jazz Bass.
It was setup and restrung by the Bass Centre in London last week with elites 45-105,s and the action and neck set the way I wanted.
It was fitted with active pickups when I bought it over 10 years ago, but I had it professionally restored to its original glory.
So its all original except for
Fender Vintage Pickups with cloth wiring loom
Pickguard
V & T controls from a 1973 P Bass
TGI flight case.
I,m looking at around £1200.

But they are not as good as a teacher.As i have no idea how to play, how do i know which youtube videos are any good.How does a youtube video correct you if you are going wrong.I have paid good money to get the best kit i can afford, so i want to learn to play it properly.I dont think there is a substitute for a good teacher as it gives you structure and explainations for everything you need to know.So, maybe there are good youtube videos, i wouldn`t know, so i wiould rather pay £20 an hour

I got talking to my neighbour, and told him i was trying to learn the Bass.He brought out a case with a 1977 Fender Precision Bass in pristine condition that has been left in the case for 20 years, and opened it for the forst time today.Is it worth anything, as i told him it could be worth at least £800.Has anyone got any idea as to what it is woth please?

I pay £20 an hour, but if you pay for 5 in advance, you get 6. Is he any good? Dunno, first teacher i have had, but i am better at playing than i was 3 weeks ago

Well, i just had a PM back and it has just been sold.Oh well, maybe done me a favour, as i would have bought it, and had the wife moaning about it taking up too much room

NIce, thanks very much for the info Grangur.The Roland is still my prefered option,only because of the size,but i will see how much it goes for as it is on ebay, and finishes tomorrow.Not really sure what it is worth, but it is worth more than the current £99 bid i imagine

I have been looking at the amps classified, and finding i have to wade through lots to find what i am trying to find. Is there any chance you could sub catagorise into either price, say 0-£99, £100-"£200 etc, or 10-100 watts, 100-200watts etc? I would imagine it would be easier to buy and sell, because i am sure i must have missed some that would be suitable for my needs

Hmmmm, decisions.It is so hard to make with all the suggestions.I am liking the thought of the 200w Trace Elliot, plus it will make another forum user happy if i bought it.However, it is unlikely i will ever gig, as i am 44 now, so am unlikely to get any chance of joining a band, and working shifts, it is going to be difficult to get much chance to get a regular spot.But i guess there is always chance of getting a slot to fill in for someones illness etc, assuming i will be any good.(think positive).So my heart says Trace Elliot, but the head says be sensible as it is probably a big unit.
There is currently a Roland Cube bass 100w currently at £99,plus £12.99 postage.So i would think that would go up quite a bit. There is a Marshall b25 at £5.50 at the moment, but the 300 mile roundtrip puts me off, so one for £35 plus £18.80 postage, The link Dandelion gave, nice amp, but again, as usual all the nice amps require hours of driving, so pushing up the price.I would travel if i found a bargain though. No second hand Ampeg BA108, so puts it in the same price range as a new Fender Rumble or Marshall MB 30. A few Peaveys around, but an amp i looked at had basic in the model name which always puts me off, but maybe a good amp.But i am also liking the look of the Harley Benton for the money, although probably not much resale value if i ever wanted to get rid of it. Up too 30 w sounds probably good for a practice amp, but i guess anything inbetween 50-200 w, would be useless, as too loud for home use, but not enough for a band, which i think Phil Starr is suggesting.
So i will see what happens with the roland cube 100, which finishes tomorrow, then go from there,which seems a bit strange after saying it would be in the useless range, but it does seem to have some nice features.

By the way, the classified would be so much easier if it could be divided into either up to £99, !00-199 etc, or up to 100 watts, 200 watss etc.It takes ages looking through them and so easy to miss a bargain

Is a 200w amp good for a beginner.In other words, would they sound ok at low volume as i wouldn`t want to disturb the neighbours as i can`t play yet.I found a Trace Elliot in the classifieds on this forum for £150
