  1. Mike and I met at Woodall Services last week. I’d collected two AC30 chrome stands for Mike on the way down. Mike brought up an ACC 406 and Ampeg V6 215. Unfortunately we didn’t have much time for chats this time but the deal, as ever went smooth with perfect organisation/communication and it was great to see Mike again. I keep threatening to visit his ACC stash on the south coast. Fingers crossed for the warmer days.

Highly recommended seller and a Lovely bloke all round.

  2. They have too many versions/places of manufacture/brands and sub brands, to keep track of now.

    However;

This is a Stingray Proper! I’m glad to see all the correct/original design cues on the instrument. I wouldn’t buy their weight saving versions (fender bridge and lightwEight tuners)  now based purely on the cosmetics so it’s good to see the actual design on sale again.

Not that I’d pay £3k for one either though 🤣

  3. My Peavey AmpKit Link seems to have died. Open earth buzz when it’s in. No audio going in and very low and noise audio (play along tracks)coming out. I’m presuming it’s a support issue as it’s about 20 years old now.
Any personal recommendations for a similar/upgrade one?

I have one. Won't work anymore. (a power thing - getting power, wont switch on), anyone have thoughts whether I should get it repaired, or say goodbye to it?

They’re a very strange/specific design so apparently not logical for a tech to suss the issues. Power wise I’m sure it’s easier than most issues but their transformers have multi taps on them so again not easiest to source if it need’s replaced

How close are the specs of the new driver to that which would have been fitted originally?

It’s hard to say as they used to ‘HH’ badge up manufacturers drivers. Sometimes Fane but often Celestion as well. The original cab is badged at  200 watts but the blown driver that came with it was a cheap/maplins type replacement.

Really nice job, great work, that’s come out looking like new and I like the badge , back in the day I had a few HH cabs, mine were really reliable but pretty heavy compared to some now, this was one I had

Thanks! I’ve had a few of the vertical 215s but the slightly newer ones with the removable front panels. Great sounding cabs.

  7. The massive, weighty cab quest/collecting is at an end. I think I’ve finally scratched the itch.
This cab was the final ‘must have/try’ cab that I’d lusted after as a young player.
It took me 35 years to find one of them. I drove to London to collect it in December. It came with a blown driver and missing one piece of plastic trim.

Thankfully this one didn’t need re tolexing. Only a couple of small nicks which I was able to glue down.
the plastic trim was impossible to find. A very flat ‘h’ shape with a coloured insert. I had to create the profile with 3 separate pieces of plastic trim and then get the colour matched and ended up painting both trims so the matched. The colour is remarkably close but the remaining trim had been non uniformly faded/stained with nicotine.
the grill frame had cracked but only required gluing. I added some wooden fillets to the baffle as the grill and whole front is angled back and was Probably the cause of the crack as it wasn’t supported and difference of about 20mm between the top and bottom.

Baffle painted, new 600w eminence installed and the Badge attached, I’d bought the badge around 15 years ago ’just in case’.

These cab restorations often end in great disappointment when I play them in a band context. This wasn’t the case with this. Very loud and consistent timbre. It’s a great cab and now Part of the ‘keepers’.

There is no other cab I fancy and I’m no longer searching. That said, if a second one came along or a second peavey 3620? 🤣

That Jabanez looks fab. Good colours and all. I suppose it weighs a lot?

Neither are lightweight basses but I never weigh basses, I think it’s so it doesn’t become a psychological issue for me. I’m fortunate enough to not be bothered physically by weight but could quite easily let it become something that would bother me if you know what I mean.

  9. Two recent acquisitions. First came the BB2000 (from Alex Carr). I’d lusted after a BB2000 since receiving their catalogue when Making Music Magazine did the old business reply card system.
As a young musician, I gazed/drooled for hours at the BB pages. I was never into Fenders at the time so I’m not sure why I was so fixated on them. I drove down to Reading and collected this 1982 bass at the beginning of April. What a stunning bass. Change of strings and a Setup to my preferences and it floored me. Stunning tone and playability.
The MC924 I drove to a gorgeous village outside Tonbridge on Saturday and brought it home with me. I got it from the original owner who bought it new in 1980.
I had an MC900 which I sold foolishly around 20 years ago. They’ve always been in the back of my mind with the intention to replace it.
The neck on this one is far superior to the one I sold, the clarity of the tone is so much better than I remember too.
Again, string change, Schaller straplock buttons and setup and it’s a beautiful player. Both keepers.
