Never mind. Someone has too e there.

Let me know when you're gigging Gravesend and Medway area again and I'll try and pop along.

  2. I am not arguing with that I totally respect the huge amount if collective knowledge there is here, which is why I am such an avid reader. When it comes to people trying to prove that they know more than the next guy by surmising what Fender would and wouldn't have done with a very early pre production version of an iconic guitar and then what the owner might and might not have done with it things start getting a bit silly.

It is what it is and I for I e wouldn't even consider insinuating that Herbie Flowers a incorrect because his version of the history of his guitar doesn't fit with what I might think it should be.

I bet if he reads this thread he won't be lending it to any other aspiring young musicians.

  3. This forum should be renamed anorak chat.

I have just been reading the first couple of posts and amazed how quickly an awesome gesture by a liviing legend to a young lad just starting out on his musical journey has been reduced to a slanging match over the exact date and status of an equally legendary instrument.

Btw that's the longest sentence I have ever written.

    Grrrr.

Are you local to here then Steve

  5. Welcome from another oldie newbie. The bass looks great. I could never produce anything like that. Hats off to you. I am not even repelled by the purple. Personally I wouldn't mess around with its looks, as it looks fantastic, but that's just my taste.

Thanks, I just watched the demo video on the Yamaha site: tasty!

I bought a 2nd hand 112xj about a month ago. It looks great in natural alder and is so easy to play. The action is low but without fret buzz and the frets are all well dressed. It is my first guitar and I can't put it down. It's in my hands as much as my Fender Jazz bass.

Picked it up on Gumtree for £80 and its a real bargain.

  7. I had a Welson Violin bass when I was in 6th Form back in the 70s which I got in a straight swap for a very tired Hofener 500/3. Like the OP I flogged it when I needed some money. I was going on holiday and I thought " oh I'll buy myself another one when I get back." I fi ally Vogt around to buying another bass this year!

It was the only violin bass I everyone's the look of and I have never seen a similar one since, despite countless Google searches. It had a sort of smokey sunburst finish and

  8. A Hofner 500/3. I thought it was a bit crap at the time and totally uncool (I wanted a Fender but they were well out of my range). I see they have started to reissue it recently as the Senator Bass for gazillions x what I paid for mine (£17).

I am now relearning on a Fender Jazz and hankering after one of those really cool German semi-acoustics.

  9. I've got one and I love it. Mind you, it's my first bass for nearly 40 years so I am possibly not be the best person to ask. I bought it from Dawsons just before the price went up in March. It's a 4 string and not one of the latest ones which I think are a bit cheaper.

What I can say us that there are no problems with quality. It is really well put together and is good quality. Don't be put off by the Made In China tag. I have 3 Chinese built telescopes as well and they are all high quality precision instruments, as is my jazz.

    Oh, and it sounds great.

  10. Hi Twincam. I am newly back to playing bass and even though I have huge hands the stretching between frets has been a problem but persevere ce a d a good teacher have helped that improve dramatically.

It does feel very awkward to start with as you are putting your left hand into positions you wouldn't ever need to if you weren't playing something like a bass or a guitar. It will come with time. Also don't be afraid to move your whole hand up and down the fretboard.
