so for a while now i've been semi-GASsing for a Stingray, but now I've kinda got my eye on a Sterling instead (mainly because you see fewer of them around and I don't like the metal control plate on a Stingray). I was just wondering what the actual differences between them were and peoples thoughts on the subject.....
also I was wondering what the deal was with picking a colour etc.... looking on the ernie ball website i see you can pretty much mix and match finishes, pickguards etc but obviously a shop probably wouldn't stock the exact one I would want
fire away....

yay! Les be da man without a doubt.
You should also check out some of his other projects outside of Primus - (Oysterhead with Stewart Copeland on drums being particularly good)
I believe he's just written a novel too?...and directed a film/documentary on the jam band scene
Les for President!

I really like the idea of blind reviews. Even any subconscious favouritism towards a brand would go out of the window in this scenario and it would be a true test of the playabiliy/sound/feel of the instrument minus any kind of opinion based on look/logo etc. I reckon it would throw up some interesting results too.
You know it makes sense.

yeah perhaps not walnut....matey here at work whose more of a guitar geek than me reckons it was probably stripped and had just become quite dark and grubby over the years....like i say...mojo!
that was the only bass in the shop, he had some nice old hofner jazz guitars and a very nice 'fake' gibson les paul plus various epiphone semis and the like

found a strange little shop in Beccles of all places today - arts, crafts & guitars! sells homemade jewellry, pots etc but also has some 'vintage' guitars out the back...very strange.
anyway.... there was a nice Musicmaster in there, looked to have a fair bit of mojo, nicely aged, was a dark wood natural body (walnut?). no price on it but the rest of the stuff he had was reasonably priced.
maybe worth a look as its reasonably local to Naaarwich

quite a good idea for maybe a sticky topic -perhaps split into regional areas.
good venues
bad venues
ones to avoid
contact numbers etc
with explanations of experiences. whys and wherefores : don't pay up, tiny stage space, 10 flights of stairs all those kind of things
One thing I can add is that the Pad button feeds straight into the valve. The gain control is actually situated after that valve. therefore, you can actually overdrive it with a hot bass with the gain control on zero! .
ah that explains alot about it peaking out so damn much then!
hmmm.... i'll have another play with it at next rehearsal - meantime looks like I'll stick to the trusty Trace although it doesn't sound quite as nice :-(
also... any recommendations for a line driver type thing? - ideally rackable... did a quick google but without much luck
c -
yeah...its fine with the Trace preamp though...plenty of power there and the power amp has a input level indicator on it too showing how much is coming in from the preamp - with the Trace its recieving loads - with the Ampeg its recieving...well not much!

I've got an Ampeg SVP-BSP Preamp (the Billy Sheehan model - signed by the man himself) and it sounds absolutely fantastic. Its got a clean and an overdrive channel which can be combined to make a lovely warm tone with a hint of distortion. At the moment I have it sitting in my 'studio' for the odd occasion when I record a bit of bass, but I really want to stick it in my gigging rack in place of my Trace Elliot GP-11.
The problem I have is that I just cannot get an kind of volume out of it! I A/Bed it last night against the Trace and with everything flat out it only puts out about half the output of the Trace. Its probably giggable volume (I am in a LOUD rock band!) but it may mean me having to push my power amp (Ampeg AP3550) alot more than I do with the Trace and I don't want to be struggling with headroom.
This has always been a problem which is why I switched it for the Trace in the first place a year or so ago, but I would much rather be using the Ampeg.
I have tried replacing the valve....no difference.
The preamp has a Pad button on it. I mainly use a Yamaha Attitude which although is a passive bass has very high output so normally I do have the pad button in. If I have the pad button out then yes, I do get much more satisfactory volume, BUT the peak light is on all the time even with the gain on about 1. Would this damage the preamp if the thing isconstantly peaking?
I'm guessing the pad function is to allow for active basses and although mine is high output its perhaps not as high as an active but it is too high for the normal input mode....if you get my drift?
any thoughts on this?

the listing has been removed! now theres a surprise!

well i quite like the idea of jam sessions and would like to get back into going to some, but i don't know....the last few i've been to seemed a bit odd..... you'd just get an entire band get up and do a couple of songs, or four or five people who obviously knew each other and played together anyway getting up and doing stuff that is obviously rehearsed. to me, that isn't what a jam session is about....i want to get up with a bunch of people i've never played with before and just see what happens - yeah theres a good chance it'll fall apart but theres also a good chance you'll come up with something cool and different just from being in unknown circumstances and having to play on the fly.
theres a new jam night at a pub quite local to me on thursdays so may well head down there at some point and see whats what

so this fodera has a buy it now of £1 !!!
yeah right! scroll down and in the small print you have.... 'A PayPal invoice of the balance (£3,149)' and 'If you were wondering why the full price was not displayed at the top, it is because a Fodera’s value lies where most people don’t look, and not on the contrary, where they often glance'
plus i think the pics are from the bassnw.com website....? look familiar

yeah one of my first basses was a Precision and since then I've pretty much always used one (or at least a derivitive version)
for me they're just comfortable, and such a good workhorse that you can just play them to death and they'll keep going and going.
As far as listening material for P-Bass users, theres just too many to mention:
Steve Harris - (Iron Maiden)
JJ Burnel - (Stranglers)
Billy Sheehan - (early stuff with Talas and his home modded P Billy P-bass)
James Jamerson - (loads of Motown sessions)
and pretty much any rock/punk bassist since the dawn of time! although the P isn't restricted to just these genres - off the top of my head theres Pino Pallidino, the guy from Doves, Norman Watt-Roy used one on Rhythm Stick, Sting, Bob Daisley, Bryan Adams ... oooh i could go on!

yeah..i'd have definitely learned more theory
also would have generally focused much more on my playing and less on arsing about with motorbikes and drugs!

G&L tribute L2500. whats the verdict?
in Bass Guitars
Posted
i used to have the G+L L2000 4 string. It was a lovely bass and the sound of it was incredible but it was a seriously heavy bass and the neck was one of the fattest I've encountered. I think they do ones with differing neck profiles though? so perhaps mine was just a chunky one! a very nice bass all in all, but not right for me personally.
