1. I remember helping a friend of my dad's move house. One of the other helpers was a professional removal man and he used a loop strap around his shoulders and heavy stuff to move it. He seemed to be able to shift really big stuff quickly and very carefully. Is this a standard removals trick? Is there any reason why nobody seems to do this with heavy cabs and combos?

I currently just have a small, portable practice amp and want to get a feel for what I should be able to shift without breaking my ever less limber body.

I have had a look in the wiki but there doens' t seem to be anything about safe lifting - tips and tricks...

    Thanks in advance.
Well, apologies if a video of some skinny white bloke with stupid hair in a crap sweater using one of the sh*ttest bass sounds I've ever heard to accompany himself murdering a Robert Johnson in a dull, toneless voice doesn't yank my crank.
Less of the skinny, please. I am skinny myself and I have tried lifting weights and eating more and I just can't do much about it. It looks like I can't help being skinny and I'd appreciate a bit more understanding!

I also can't help agreeing with you about the music...

  3. Hello Pete,

I am not so far away in York. I don't get out much now that we have young children but I am planning to be at the Black Swan for Al Morrison on 15th July.

If anyone wants to meet me there, please PM.

    Regards,

  4. On a bit of a different tack from the responses above... With regard to the speed, there is only one bullet-proof approach that works for increasing speed, in just about any musical context:

    1. Slow it down to get the accuracy/creativity.
    2. Overspeed it to really stress test your lines.
    3. Wind down to the true speed. If that didn't work, repeat.

    +1 on D'Addarios
Apparently they are "tape" wound. Dead smooth anyway...

It's not what you play, it's how you play it.

No, it's not just you. That's exactly what I thought when I read the BGM article. Simple, striking to look at, something that does the job well. Or it's the bass your teacher might suggest you buy when you show that you have some commitment to playing bass but your bass is a bit cheap and nasty.

Totally aside from the other comments - I understand you wanting to stick up for your rights when other people would not even know their rights properly but...

The experienced solicitors I know would only ever bring cases in their own name as an absolute last resort. Have a long think before diving in :)

Welcome bumfrog - more the merrier , I say.
If I can get to the Black Swan on 6th March I will expect an exciting and/or amusing injury to be laid on in the name of entertainment... ;)

Keep an eye on them - it's not the World's Best Venue TM but they have a lot of good gigs.

  11. I went to see the James Taylor Quartet in York on Friday and it was absolutely fantastic. I could waffle on about virtuoso talent but that wasn't the point - the point was brilliant entertainment from start to finish.

And Andrew McKinney is a monster on bass. I shall be paying more attention to his Bass Guitar Magazine column from now on.

Go and see them if you get the chance.

  13.
Welcome from that forgotten bit of Yorkshire, the East Riding.
Is MOR music still open in York?
Used to always pop in at Bulmers for s/h stuff-had a few bargains from there over the years!
Yes, MOR is still going, as far as I know. These days I go to Rock-ola, who have moved to a new shop in Colliergate. I think the guy who runs Rock-ola use to work at MOR. Not that they have huge amounts of bass-specific stuff...
Bulmers is still fun for the prospect of a bargain among the ... err ... tat.

Actually, has a pretty thriving music scene considering the size of the place....
Me too. I will be at the Black Swan jazz night next Wednesday (and more Wednesdays than not for that matter). I have an Ibanez BTB555 - so you know which one is me ;)

    All the best,

    Nick

  15.
Hi

I'm looking for a Bass teacher, someone who will be patient with a complete beginner suffering from a mid life crisis!

I live in Glossop but work away in York / Harrogate during the week (school time) so could do lessons in an evening up in York/ Harrogate or [snip]...

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Thanks

    Mike
As it happens, I am hoping to start lessons with a new teacher in York some time very soon. If it works out (well), I will get back to you with a recommendation.

    Nick
