1. On the one hand, I bet this guy's wife gets a LOT of "headaches" and your bass just happens to be the latest cause.

On the other hand, you could ask somebody to record you for a 20 seconds or so with their phone or something. This would be enough to see if the bass is really too loud but not something more subtle, like just not sitting nicely in the mix. Sometimes it is the cranky people that have the honesty to put you on to a problem, even if they do it the wrong way.

2. I tried to do exactly this and found that the latency was terrible. So I did it the opposite way round. I got a cheap mixer (Behringer 502) and I take the headphone/speaker output from the computer to the mixer, where I blend it with the signal from the bass and send it to headphones. You need a short 3.5mm lead and and 3.5mm to 2x1/4" adapter to plug the stereo lead from the computer into the mixer.

This works perfectly for me. (And you will find the mixer comes in handy.)

3. Well loved but now superfluous Fishman BP100.
This has clips to hold the transducers on to the bridge and these are NOT in good shape, as the velvet is coming away from the metal. I think this is a common issue and Fishman admit on their website it is probably better to mount with heat glue rather than the clips.

The state of the clips does not affect the sound but I have knocked the price down because most kit sold here is in excellent condition.

Grab yourself a bargain.

I sort-of know Nick (Kev of Arts Barge connections here, Nick!) but I'm looking for a step up from what I've currently got - something woody-sounding with a carved top. I was actually considering that B&H that Nick bought, but it came along at a bad time for me. Sounds great too. :)

Hi Kev. That Golden Strad is awesome. I got the painty fingerboard sorted and I have my super long spike fittted and now it's just the way I want it. And you should hear how it works with that Fishman Full Circle pick-up. Mmmmmm. But that's a different story, I am selling my perfectly adequate but not really awesome bass here.

5. Koplin Violins. They are relatively new and I have not seen a lot of examples of their work. However, they did a superb cosmetic repair to Christian Topman's double bass (previously owned by John Thorne) after it got deeply scored. Also they have some good instruments in stock. I am taking my double bass there for a string/fingerboard/bridge pickup set-up and I will try to remember to update this with the results.

When I'm playing my walking lines (which at the moment are fairly simple R37R or R35R type things) what is the best way to approach a bar with two chords in it? R - 5 for both? If it helps the tune I'm looking at is Autumn Leaves. Thanks!

The turn-around at the end of Autumn Leaves really lends itself to playing the thirds on beats 2 and 4. Don't feel obliged to keep walking here. If the soloist has peaked and is tailing off it can be better to go back to a 2 feel, either playing roots or the obvious chromatic line. Then you can either pick up walking on the last n beats before the repeat, or stay in 2 for a bit of variety.
