I too will be watching this thread to see how mine could look when I get round to it.

Hey don’t hold your breath, I’ve got a wacky (in a good way) /challenging/exciting build to do for wwcringe. I’ve got a feeling we might see yours finished before this….. :)

Has this build moved on ? Would love to see more.

Thanks for asking – I’ve not done any more!!! Since then I’ve been busy making them for others, I’ve made 3 basses and 2 guitars, got 1 bass and a guitar to make then hopefully I can get back to this baby…..

Nice thinking mate! Another interesting fact is as it looks it's going to be made of oak, since it's the scraps I have around the workshop. So it'll even be heavy like an Alembic too ;)

I know oak isn’t fashionable for basses but I’ve always fancied trying it out, I bet it would be very resonant.
Oak bass doesn’t have to be too heavy, just make the body thinner than normal as a % of the density difference, for example if you made the body 37mm thick it would weigh about the same as a 44mm thick ash body. I did that recently with an ovangkol body and it’s 8.5lb finished

  5. As everyone else has said above - I got an amp from Simon, It was a very very easy deal with good communication and amp was very well packed. It doesnt get any better than this!!

The action may feel high if the nut is cut a bit high. If the humbuckers have 4 wire connection (one pair for each coil) you could disconnect one coil for that jazz Pickup sound.

+1 If fits hard to fret it's most possibly nut is too high rather than the bridge, but probably both.

  7. Buy a cheap ebay neck and make the body. Making body isnt too hard if you've got a router and time and you cant go too far wrong with it if you take your time. From what I've heard some of the cheap necks on ebay are actually quite good.

If that works out good then you can always try making a neck but in the mean time you've got a working bass

Or buy a squire, cut 5mm off the top, stick on a fancy wood, shape it, route out the back and hey presto you've got a bling bass for not a lot of cash and thats easier than making a body. If cutting 5mm (or whatever) of the top is too much for you to do get someone else to do that (1hr job) and sticking a new top on is easy
