1.
Tempted.....no I mustn't. If it were navy I'd be in the car by now. :)
It made me stop in my tracks! Hmmm... It would look good with a black scratchplate...!

  2. I am beginning to think that this thread is less about the bass and it's merits and more about what holes can be picked in it because it's cheap therefore it must be crap and not worth spending any effort or cash on.

The stock basses are let down by poor strings, pickups, and most (as far as I can tell) need a neck shim. So yes, they do show their cheapness, and they are almost unplayable, but what can you expect for £60?

In my view my Ryder is a platform to make my own bass. I could probably save up for a few months and afford a decent Fender, but then I wouldn't have the guts to set about modding it with new pickups, scratchplate, electrics, knobs and making it MY bass. Just like some people enjoy modifying a cheap japanese car rather than saving up and buying a posh porsche.

Bottom line in my opinion, is if you have a problem with them for whatever reason, then you can carry on coveting your vintage fenders/boutique customs. Nobody is forcing you to be concerned by these bits of cheap fun! :)

  3. So, I got my pickups in and wired up yesterday! (No thanks at all to my AWFUL 25W soldering iron....)

Sounds lovely through my knackered home practice setup, and I love the way it looks with black pickups instead of white ones! Can't wait to gig it! I may be waiting until March though. :)

The pole pieces are much large than the originals (I'd guess at 2x the size), but the pickup covers are a bit smaller, hopefully when I get a new black pickguard this issue will be less noticeable!

One bad point... I dropped a pickguard screw down the back of the cabinet that has my fish tank on. No way am i getting that back! Ah well, i will need more screws for the new pickguard anyway.

  4.
Sorry that didn't come across very well: I meant that £60 was good value for the body even if you threw most of the other bits away.

People planning drive-by's of the various shops can take Woodbridge off the list: no guitars here, just girly dresses. Unless of course ...
No problem. It's tough sometimes to figure out the tone people are trying to put across!

I think I may have to get a bridge ashtray purely for ergonomic reasons :) I found myself scratching my right hand on the saddle grub screws on Saturday night.

I'm slowly turning this into "Pimp My Ryd(er)"

  5.
So, that's £60 for a painted alder body.
An alder body which has been painted, sculpted, routed and fitted with a high mass bridge (if you bought a fender highmass you'd be looking at about $60)

Why are people being so sceptical? It's just a bit of fun!

  6.
What pups are you putting in there plus you'll have to let me know if you're gigging local soon, would love to hear it?
I've got some pups from eBay on the way from an 80s Fender Jazz Special :) I'm always gigging locally, our band's gig list is here: http://www.laapband.com/GigList.html

  7. Gigged my Ryder last night! I took my Washburn with me just in case, but ended up using the Ryder all night. So far all that's changed from stock is a neck shim and a set of flatwounds. I'm quite excited about getting the new pickups, as the stock one seems to clip(!?)

  8.
Out of interest and being a bit of a geek..............

I was wondering what the relevence of the numbers stuck on the back of the headstock meant. My firts buy, the White one has RP-1-1.8.256. The second ordered, the Dark Blue one has RP-1-10.7.256. A few more numbers from fellow owners may shed light on things??

Also Ive noticed that The 'R' on the scratchplate and Headstock Printing is slightly different and in a slightly different position between the two.

To put a date on things, the box for the Blue one (RP-1-10.7.256) had "Checked by Brian 30/2/08" written on it!!

And finally. Ive had a damn good look under that very nice dark blue and from what I can see these babies have very nice patterned [s]ONE PIECE bodies[/s]!!!! Now thats something you dont see very often.

    A

EDIT: Just found the two joins in better light. Still, nice looking pattern :)
The number on my Navy blue Ryder is RP-1-1.8.256 as well, so your white one must have been made on the same day as mine!

As far as i can see, my Ryder's body is a Two piece body :)

  9. Just snagged a pick-up from an 80s Jazz Special (the model Duff McKagan uses apparently!) from eBay for £32.77!

What's the best place to get some CTS pots + Sprague drop cap? There's a New Zealander that does a kit for ~£25. Anyone had experience buying from him?

  10.
My Low Ryder is coming together. Fitted the tortoise shell plate (inexpertly, but that's the point of messing with a cheap bass!) and added some Warwick straplocks.
Where did you get your scratchplate form? Is that a mexican style plate?

EDIT: WD Music do 20 pickguard screws for less than £2 (+ delivery)

  11.
I'm a bit jarred. Was gonna get one to bastardize then the Mrs remembered the phone bill was due, so the money we could have used was kept for the bill. Phones up today to pay the bill and we're £4 in Credit WTF how does that work out. Turns out they used the deposit put down when we took out the contract to pay the bill with out telling us.

And now they are outta stock . TYPICAL
You can buy mine for £150 cash. They're limited edition don't you know! :)

  12. I must say that the drummer in my band has got to be the best musician of the lot of us. No ego at all, just a thoroughly great chap!

I've only played with a few drummers, but the ones that give you death stares while drumming have to be the worst (even if they don't mean it!)
